Deutsche Bank Offices Raided By Police On Money Laundering Concerns

It looks as though Chief Executive Christian Sewing could actually be making an attempt to clean things up at Deutsche Bank, after years of regulatory issues at the bank. In fact, Deutsche Bank headquarters is reportedly being searched at this moment as part of an ongoing money laundering case that it appears the bank tipped off regulators to.

The bank's offices in Frankfurt are being searched by law enforcement authorities "after the lender flagged potential money laundering," Bloomberg wrote on Friday morning. The raid includes officials from the Frankfurt prosecutors office and Germany's BKA federal police, the report continues. The searches are taking place following the decision by a Frankfurt court, the report says.

Additionally, representatives of financial regulator BaFin were also involved in the search, Reuters reported. Deutsche Bank said in a statement that the search relates to “reports made by the bank of suspected money laundering" and the bank said it is "cooperation [sic] fully with authorities". Reuters confirmed that the search was due to a tip from the bank, stating "the search involved suspicious transactions it had itself passed on to authorities".

"Police officers are present in and around Deutsche Bank’s Frankfurt headquarters", Bloomberg confirmed Friday morning. However, one witness told Reuters "there was no sign of authorities outside the bank's headquarters on Friday". Deutsche Bank made the following statement:

"This is an investigative measure by the Frankfurt public prosecutor's office in connection with suspicious activity reports filed by the bank. Deutsche Bank is fully cooperating with the authorities."

Meanwhile, Deutsche has been under the microscope for potential money laundering for years, facing nearly $700 million in fines for trades that authorities said were used to illegally launder money.

Berkshire bought $51 billion in stock as Buffett combats supply chain-but also bought $3.2B in own shares-DERP!!

Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. dove into equity markets in the first quarter, spending more than $51 billion on stocks including a much larger stake in Chevron Corp.

Berkshire, which Buffett has run since 1965, also said on Saturday quarterly operating profit was little changed from a year earlier, with some businesses able to fend off supply chain disruptions. Geico, the car insurer, posted an underwriting loss. The Omaha, Nebraska-based company also said it repurchased $3.2 billion of its own stock in the quarter, but none in the first three weeks of April. Berkshire's disclosures suggest that Buffett has finally found large new uses to dispose of Berkshire's cash pile, which shrank more than $40 billion to about $106 billion. The Chevron stake grew to $25.9 billion as of March 31 from just $4.5 billion three months earlier, as oil prices surged higher following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. That came on the heels of Berkshire's purchase of well over $6 billion of stock in Occidental Petroleum Corp, where it already had a $10 billion preferred stock stake. Buffett has also committed $11.6 billion to buy insurance company Alleghany Corp (Y.N), and bought $4.2 billion of HP Inc (HPQ.N) stock. Berkshire ended March with $391 billion of stocks, more than half of the company's $712 billion overall market value. Other businesses include the BNSF railroad, Berkshire Hathaway Energy, and a variety of manufacturing and retail operations including See's Candies and Dairy Queen ice cream.

First-quarter operating profit edged up to $7.04 billion, or about $4,786 per Class A share, from $7.02 billion a year earlier. Berkshire's net income fell 53% to $5.46 billion, or $3,702 per Class A share, to $11.71 billion, or $7,638 per Class A share, a year earlier. Net results included $1.58 billion of gains and losses from stocks including Apple Inc as well as Chevron. An accounting rule requires Berkshire to report unrealized gains and losses with net results, and Buffett urges investors to ignore the resulting volatility-why you are buying your own shares....kek!.'

Nuffin to see here

Berkshire released results ahead of its first in-person annual shareholder meeting since 2019 in Omaha. In its quarterly report, Berkshire alluded to the Ukraine invasion, without mentioning it specifically, and the spread of Omicron variants of COVID-19 in discussing the supply chain issues that many businesses now face. "Significant disruptions of supply chains and higher costs have persisted in 2022," it said. "Further, the development of geopolitical conflicts in 2022 have contributed to disruptions of supply chains, resulting in cost increases for commodities, goods, and services in many parts of the world." Berkshire businesses that took hits included Precision Castparts aircraft parts, Clayton Homes mobile homes and McLane food distribution. Chip shortages were also a problem, dampening consumer shipping volume at BNSF and reducing sales volume at Berkshire Hathaway Automotive car dealerships.

Revenue nevertheless rose at both, with BNSF benefiting from higher fuel prices and surcharges, and car and truck sales revenue growing because vehicles are getting more expensive. Rising used car prices and shortages of replacement parts also weighed on the Geico auto insurer, which posted an underwriting loss because loss claims are increasing. Profit from Berkshire Hathaway Energy, one of Berkshire's largest businesses and a steady earnings generator, rose 7%, helped by higher electric utility margins and tax benefits at its MidAmerican Energy unit. Berkshire's stock has withstood recent market volatility far better than many other large U.S. stocks. Its Class A shares are up more than 7% this year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 has fallen 13%.

Biden’s $1.75 Trillion Student-Debt Problem by the Numbers

President Joe Biden is considering forgiving at least $10,000 in student loans per borrower, a promise he made on the campaign trail, through executive action.

Here are key data points:

*$1.75 trillion the total amount of outstanding student-loan debt in U.S., according to the Federal Reserve. About 92% of that debt more than $1.6 trillion -- is in the hands of the federal government. Put another way, student-loan debt equals about 6.5% of U.S. gross domestic product.

*43.4 million -- the number of borrowers with federal student-loan debt, according to the Education Data Initiative.

*$37,113 -- the average balance for borrowers of federal student loans. Including private debt, the number jumps to $40,904.

*Four -- the number of months Biden has to make a decision. The moratorium on student-loan payments is set to expire on Aug. 31, and the president has said he intends to either extend the moratorium or do some sort of debt cancellation before that date. The deadline leaves just over two months until November’s midterm elections that will decide which party controls Congress.

*41% -- Biden’s approval rating among Americans aged 18 to 29, according to the Harvard Institute of Politics youth poll released Monday. His approval rating is down 18 percentage points from a year ago, according to the poll. The top reason cited for dismay was his “ineffectiveness.” Young Americans are likely to be a decisive voting bloc in the midterms. Harvard’s poll found that with more than six months until the election, youth turnout is expected to match the historically high turnout seen in the last midterm cycle: 36% said they will “definitely” vote; 37% said so at this point in 2018.

*34% -- adults aged 18 to 29 who have student-loan debt, according to the Education Data Initiative.

*85% -- young Americans, regardless of party, who favor some sort of government action on student debt, according to the Harvard poll; 38% favor total debt cancellation. Only 13% believe the government should not take any action on it. Among young Americans who are not currently enrolled in college and without a degree, support for government action is 79%.

*$22,690 to $39,150 -- the average cost of attendance for full-time in-state and out-of-state undergraduate students at public four-year institutions, according to the College Board. The average cost of private non-profit four-year universities is $51,690.

*$52,000 -- the average student debt owed by Black bachelor’s-degree holders. By race, Black college graduates owe considerably more than others on average. Four years after graduation, almost half owe an average of 12.5% more than they borrowed, according to the Education Data Initiative.

Proponents of a broad cancellation include prominent Democrats, President Barack Obama’s former education secretary and a former official in the Trump administration’s education department. Biden has said he is not considering forgiving $50,000 worth of debt for every borrower. A recent analysis by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis found that rates of missed payments on student loans are at risk of climbing when the forbearance ends. “Serious delinquency rates for student debt could snap back from historic lows to their previous highs in which 10% or more of the debt was past due,” Lowell Ricketts, a data scientist for the Institute for Economic Equity at the St. Louis Fed, said in the post. Interest rates for federal student loans vary depending on the loan type and generally are set in May for loans disbursed from July to same month of the following year, according to the Department of Education’s Federal Student Aid office. Students currently pay 3.73% for the most limited subsidized loans, to 5.28% for unsubsidized loans. Unlike other forms of debt, such as credit cards and mortgages, the loans are daily interest loans, which means that interest accumulates daily. Parents of students and graduate students pay 6.28%. This raises the outstanding amount due on the loan and interest is then charged on that higher principal balance, increasing the overall cost of the loan. Most federal student loans also have an origination fee that is a percentage of the total loan amount. This fee is deducted from each loan that is disbursed. This means the money received will be less than the amount the student actually borrowed and is charged interest on. The interest rates on federal student loans is set by federal law by using the May 10-year Treasury note auction and adding 2.05 percentage points to 4.6 percentage points based on the loan type. and wut has been on a tear since March 1st??

Adler Posts $1.24 Billion Loss in Report Auditor Won’t Endorse

Adler Group SA posted a 1.18 billion-euro ($1.24 billion) loss last year on a major goodwill impairment, in annual results that the company’s auditor declined to endorse.

The embattled German landlord wrote down the value of its Consus development business by 1.08 billion euros, blaming construction inflation and supply chain bottlenecks that had forced it to revise assumptions about the likely profitability of its projects, according to the delayed full-year earnings statement Saturday.

delayed report issued on a Saturday-muh surprised face

Auditor KPMG refused to provide an opinion on the accounts after Adler withheld correspondence about related party deals that are a focus in fraud allegations by short seller Fraser Perring. That meant auditors were unable to judge whether the deals, for which Adler is still owed money in some cases, had been accounted for properly, KPMG said.

The delayed earnings report comes days after Adler released findings of a KPMG probe into the allegations made by Perring’s Viceroy Research in October. The publication of the probe triggered a further sell off in the company’s stock and bonds because KPMG was unable to refute many of the accusations and found a series of corporate governance failings.

and KPMG is totally trustworthy..../s

Key to Perring’s accusations were valuations Adler placed on its holdings and deals between the landlord and companies linked to some of its backers, including the extended family of Austrian financier Cevdet Caner. Adler is still owed money for some of the deals, which date back several years. It has refused to write off the sums despite recommendations from KPMG that it should mark down the receivables from at least on of the deals.

The ubiquitous mark-to-model vs. mark-to-market

The company on Saturday acknowledged there was a risk it may not recover 58.6 million euros it is owed by Azeri investor Natig Ganiyev, who agreed to buy its Accentro unit in 2017. It now has more than 423 million euros in in outstanding receivables. That’s down from a restated figure of 461 million euros for 2020.

The company’s property portfolio was valued at 9.97 billion euros at the end of December, down from 11.7 billion euros a year earlier following sales designed to cut debt. Adler’s loan-to-value ratio a key metric for real estate companies that measures relative indebtedness was 50.9%, down from 54.3% a year earlier.

Adler, which had rapidly grown into one of Germany’s biggest landlords through debt-fueled acquisitions and a controversial merger, has spent much of the last year reeling from the allegations by Viceroy as well as an anonymous whistleblower, who sent information to the firm’s banks. The company sold off about 40% of its 70,000 apartments in an effort to pay down a debt pile that had reached $9 billion.

In the past week, since KPMG released its report, Adler’s shares have lost 38% of their value and are trading at a record low. While KPMG’s investigators satisfied themselves that the bulk of Adler’s portfolio was valued accurately, they were unable to disprove many of the other claims.

the other side of the story is that he was bi-sexual (I could care less about it too) but in the 'macho' racing world that was not a good thing.

When he first arrived in F1 (and the lower formulas in europe his 'attendant', because they call them personal trainers now and those did not exist then, was easily gay. No question about it I saw it and as mentioned I could care less.

So he had a series of high profile popular Brazilian 'girlfriends' to try an counter this perception-one his companions was Xuxa who was a popular host of a kids TV show and he also has an american girlfriend too.

So there was that-never married either.

I am fairly confident he knew shit and started getting vocal about it and he was a very public sacrifice because F1 could go in and out of countries with huge ACs and side-step most customs and immigration controls because of Bernie Eccelstones connections and they were certainly carrying 'other' things on those Acs

Japan plans to send foreign minister for S. Korean pres. inauguration

Japan plans to send Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi to South Korean President-elect Yoon Suk Yeol's inauguration ceremony next week, deciding not to consent to Seoul's wish for Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to attend, government sources said Monday. Seoul had hoped for Kishida's presence at the May 10 event to help improve bilateral relations that have soured over historical disputes which stem from Japan's 1910-1945 colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula. But the sources said Tokyo has decided the Japanese leader cannot go without any guarantee of progress on the disagreements. During his stay, Hayashi is expected to hold meetings with key officials of the new South Korean government with the hope they will agree to work toward mending political ties that have sunk to their lowest level in years under the administration of the current president, Moon Jae In, the sources said.

China Holds Secret Bank Meetings To Plan For Protecting Assets From US Sanctions

China is taking serious steps to prepare itself for potential future US sanctions such as have been imposed against Russia's banking sector, with regulators recently convening an emergency meeting of domestic and foreign banks to examine how to best protect the country's overseas assets.

Over the weekend the FT identified that the internal conference was held on April 22 and included top officials from China's central bank and finance ministry. It's also said that representatives were sent from every domestic and Chinese overseas bank, and additionally some China-tied international institutions, notably among them HSBC. The somewhat secretive conference was held as Russia is charging Washington with stealing $300 billion of its assets held overseas."Western nations have actually stolen more than 300 billion US dollars from Russia when they seized the money meant to pay for Russian gas, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with Al Arabiya TV on Friday," wrote state-run TASS base don the top diplomat's words.

Lavrov had with the last days again described US-led actions of the West "shameless robbery" and described, "London, Washington, Brussels are looking at seizing the money they have frozen to transfer it to someone else."

Indeed there's been open talk of using seized Russian assets, including frozen Russian Central Bank reserves, to rebuild Ukraine in the future and to fund Ukrainian institutions. European countries have led to way in the seizures with Washington's goading.

It appears China is taking note and not sitting idly by for its own similar crisis, especially as rhetoric ratchets concerning Taiwan and potential parallels with Ukraine. The emergency meeting also came after starting in March the Biden administration began expressly warning Beijing not to serve as enabler to Russia's military machine by supplying it, or also assisting in sanctions evasion. Biden had in a March 18 call conveyed this warning to President Xi Jinping directly.

1/6 Lavrov discusses rationale behind ruble payments by Europeans for Russian gas:

“A simple thing has happened that those who have been criticising and condemning our actions don’t want to talk about: our money, more than $300 billion, has been stolen.— M. K. Bhadrakumar (@BhadraPunchline) May 2, 2022

Citing official sources out of China, FT details the following: "...the meeting began with remarks from a senior finance ministry official who said Xi’s administration had been put on alert by the ability of the US and its allies to freeze the Russian central bank’s dollar assets." "The officials and attendees did not mention specific scenarios but one possible trigger for such sanctions is thought to be a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, which China claims as its territory and has threatened to invade if Taipei refuses to submit to its control indefinitely," the report continued. A person briefed on some specifics discussed at the meeting told FT: "If China attacks Taiwan, decoupling of the Chinese and western economies will be far more severe than [decoupling with] Russia because China’s economic footprint touches every part of the world." And more from the report: Senior regulators including Yi Huiman, chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission, and Xiao Gang, who headed the CSRC from 2013 to 2016, asked bankers in attendance what could be done to protect the nation’s overseas assets, especially its $3.2tn in foreign reserves. China’s vast dollar-denominated holdings range from more than $1tn US Treasury bonds to New York office buildings. State-owned Dajia Insurance Group, for example, owns the Waldorf Astoria New York. At the same time, it seems Taiwan is on the opposite side of taking notes from the Ukraine playbooks and domino effect of international reaction. “We try to see what we can learn from Ukraine in defending ourselves,” Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Joseph Wu told CNN's Fareed Zakarai in a Sunday interview.

Justice Department’s Investigation of Archegos Leaves Out Three Bank Names: JPMorgan, Citigroup and Bank of America

Last Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) brought charges against executives at Archegos Capital Management, the family office hedge fund that was somehow able to trick the most sophisticated trading houses on Wall Street into giving it 85 to 90 percent margin debt on concentrated stock positions – one of which had been called a “fraud” in a detailed report. Archegos blew itself up with that margin debt in March 2021, leaving a handful of these sophisticated trading firms acknowledging losses of more than $10 billion dollars.

The complaint filed by the Justice Department is the only complaint from the three federal agencies that names the Wall Street banks involved – although it paints the banks as hapless victims of the fraud instead of co-conspirators. (The SEC complaint simply refers to the banks as CP1 through CP8, short for “Counterparty 1” through “Counterparty 8” while the CFTC’s complaint simply refers to the Wall Street banks as counterparties.)

The Justice Department names nine Wall Street trading houses that had as much as $125 billion total in margin loans outstanding at their peak to Archegos. Those firms are:

Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, Jefferies, Macquari, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Morgan Stanley, Nomura, UBS

But the Justice Department’s complaint also notes that Archegos had a total of 12 counterparties, not 9.

Why didn’t the Justice Department name the other three firms? One possibility is that these three firms rank among the five largest federally-insured, deposit-taking banks in the U.S. and their involvement with a dodgy hedge fund and shares of a company called a “fraud,” might not be good for public confidence in the U.S. banking system. But if the Justice Department won’t let the whole truth out, how can the American people know what financial reforms they need to demand from Congress?
