Ripple considering IPO after SEC suit wraps up
The CEO of Ripple, which is the issuer of the eponymous cryptocurrency XRP USD XRPUSD, -0.48%, will weigh a potential initial public offering after its lawsuit with the Securities and Exchange Commission ends, the CEO of the company told CNBC-TV at Davos. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse said the company is now "at a point in scale" where an initial public offering is a "possibility." In November, Ripple said it's making progress and expects a suit by the SEC to resolve by the end of 2022. The SEC has charged Ripple with selling $1.3 billion in XRP cryptocurrency in an unregistered securities offering, but Ripple maintains that the XRP is not a security. XRP is currently one of the largest cryptocurrencies in the world.

The orignal 'investor' in Ripple was Matthew Mellon (of that Banking Family) and 'died' under mysterious circumstances.
Famous Ripple Cryptocurrency Investor Matthew Mellon dies aged 54
Matthew Mellon, cryptocurrency investor and heir to one of the wealthiest banking assets, died before entering a rehab center in Mexico at the age of 54, according to multiple sources. His death was later confirmed by his own Cousin Peter Stephaich, who refused to give details.
Mellon said he would check into rehab in 2016 shortly after announcing that he and his second wife were getting a divorce. That same year, he admitted spending $ 100,000 a month on his addiction to OxyContin. Mellon claims he was taking 80 tablets a day when he checked into the Passages treatment center in Malibu, California.
“[Using that much] is the death zone, ”Mellon said to Page Six at the time.
Mellon, et al former chairman of the New York Republican Party Finance Committee, said he became addicted to a surfing injury when doctors prescribed OxyCotin “like they were smarties”. Mellon was descended from two powerful banking houses. His father founded Mellon Bank, now part of BNY Mellon, while on his mother’s side he was related to Anthony Joseph Drexel, the co-founder of Drexel Burnham Lambert, the now defunct bank known for groundbreaking junk bonds-and one of the holders of the now infamous Silver Short legacy position-that was haded off to Bear Stearns which was then habded off to JP Morgue in 2008 when DBL couldn't handle it any moar. Mellon inherited 13 trust funds starting with a $ 25 million allowance when he was 21 years old.
The prominent man has made his own fortune with cryptocurrencies in recent years, investing in Ripple and its token XPR. According to Bitcoin, Ripple is the third largest cryptocurrency after Bitcoin and Etherium CoinMarketCap.

Updated on April 18, 2018, 3:25 p.m .: A Clear Sky Recovery spokesman made a statement to the Daily Dot claiming Mellon died prior to scheduled check-in at his hotel’s rehab center specializing in ibogaine treatment.
“Matthew Mellon arrived in Cancun Mexico with his private entourage on Sunday, April 15, 2018. He arrived on a private plane and checked into his hotel in Cancun Mexico.
“Mr. Mellon was scheduled to check-in at Clear Sky Recovery on Monday, April 16, 2018. We received a message that he had died at his hotel on the morning of April 16, prior to his scheduled check-in. We have no further comment on this unfortunate situation."

Volkswagen to pay out £193m in UK 'dieselgate' settlement
Volkswagen is to pay a total of £193m to more than 90,000 UK drivers after it settled a High Court claim over the installation of emissions cheating devices in its vehicles. The German carmaker apologised again to customers and said it was working to rebuild trust. The "dieselgate" scandal erupted in 2015 and has led to VW facing litigation in several countries.
The group has already paid out more than €30bn (£26bn) worldwide. This includes fines, compensation, civil settlements and buyback schemes. The use of "defeat devices" meant that Volkswagen's cars were certified as conforming to EU pollution standards when, in reality, they were emitting up to 40 times the legally permitted amount of nitrogen dioxide. Nitrogen dioxide is a pollutant, which has been linked to respiratory diseases and premature death. Volkswagen admitted that 11 million vehicles worldwide, including almost 1.2 million in the UK, were affected. About 91,000 motorists in England and Wales, represented by several legal firms, took action against VW as well as its subsidiaries Audi, Seat and Skoda.
Among other things they claimed they had been misled by VW about the sustainability ratings of their cars and in many cases it affected the value of their vehicles. The claim, which lawyers said would have been the biggest ever brought by a group of consumers in the UK, was due to go to trial in January 2023. Volkswagen said it had made no admission of liability but that the legal costs of a six-month trial in England meant a settlement "was the most prudent course of action commercially".

Canadian police said on Wednesday they had barred Prime Minister Justin Trudeau from a fundraising event over safety concerns after protesters with several cars and trucks started gathering outside the venue. Trudeau had been due to address an event held by the ruling Liberal Party in the province of British Columbia on Tuesday. Last year he had gravel thrown at him during an election campaign stop. Due the size and composition of the protest group and for the safety of everyone in attendance, a decision was made that it was not safe for the prime minister to attend," the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a statement. One of the protesters carried a model gallows and noose adorned with a slogan accusing Trudeau of treason. Asked about the incident, Trudeau told reporters earlier on Wednesday that attendees had been faced with harassment, racist insults and threats of violence. "The safety of Canadians choosing to make their voices heard and politics should never be in question as it was last night and as we're increasingly seeing across the country," he said.

South Korea hikes key rate by 25 bps to 1.75% as inflation rises
Rhee makes a hawkish move in his debut as governor. South Korea's central bank continued to tighten policy in the face of soaring inflation, raising its key interest rate by 25 basis points to 1.75% on Thursday.
The Bank of Korea's second straight hike came in the first meeting under new Gov. Rhee Chang-yong, the International Monetary Fund's former Asia-Pacific director who took the helm of the bank last month. Asia's fourth-largest economy is wrestling with fast-rising consumer prices and slumping domestic spending. The country's consumer price index hit a 13-and-a-half-year high in April, rising 4.8% from a year earlier. The South Korean bank's move is in line with the U.S. Federal Reserve which raised its key interest rate by a half percentage point to a range of 0.75%-1% earlier this month.
