More than 3,500 flights canceled so far over Memorial Day weekend

Airline travelers are not only facing sticker shock this Memorial Day weekend, the kickoff to the summer travel season. They're also dealing with a pileup of flight cancellations.

More than 1,200 flights were canceled as of 2 p.m EST Saturday, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. That followed more than 2,300 cancellations on Friday.

Delta Air Lines suffered the most among U.S. airlines, with more than 240 flights, or 9% of its operations, eliminated on Saturday. Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, where Delta is based and has its largest hub, was heavily affected by the travel delays. On Saturday, 5% of the flights there were cancelled, while 7% were delayed. Delta noted in an email to The Associated Press that Saturday's cancellations were due to bad weather and "air traffic control actions," noting it's trying to cancel flights at least 24 hours in advance this Memorial Day weekend.

Delta announced on its website on Thursday that from July 1 to Aug. 7, it would reduce service by about 100 daily departures, primarily in parts of the U.S. and Latin America that Delta frequently serves. "More than any time in our history, the various factors currently impacting our operation — weather-see cap#2 sure that is totally a factor today and air traffic control, vendor staffing, increased COVID case rates contributing to higher-than-planned unscheduled absences in some work groups — are resulting in an operation that isn't consistently up to the standards Delta has set for the industry in recent years," said Delta's Chief Customer Experience Officer Allison Ausband in a post.

Airlines and tourist destinations are anticipating monster crowds this summer as travel restrictions ease and pandemic fatigue overcomes lingering fear of contracting COVID-19 during travel.

Many forecasters believe the number of travelers will match or even surpass levels in the good-old, pre-pandemic days. However, airlines have thousands fewer employees than they did in 2019, and that has at times contributed to widespread flight cancellations.

People who are only now booking travel for the summer are experiencing the sticker shock.

Domestic airline fares for summer are averaging more than $400 for a round trip, 24% higher than this time in 2019, before the pandemic, and a robust 45% higher than a year ago, according to travel-data firm Hopper.

California, New Zealand announce climate change partnership

Top officials from California and New Zealand signed a pledge Friday agreeing to help fight climate change by sharing ideas and best practices, including how to put millions more electric vehicles on the road. Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, and New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern spoke about the agreement at San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. The agreement doesn't commit either government to specific policies but outlines broad areas for cooperation. “We have a natural connection and I’m so pleased we’ve put pen to paper today to confirm that and continue our cooperation on one of the great challenges from our generation,” Ardern said.

Kiribati runway project in focus as China's Wang Yi tours region

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's 10-day tour of Pacific island nations shows China's efforts to grow its regional presence in places like Kiribati, where a World War II-era airstrip symbolizes these remote countries' geopolitical significance.

In Kiribati's capital Tarawa on Friday, Wang signed documents on cooperation in building infrastructure and fighting the effects of climate change, saying "to help developing countries is to help China itself," according to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He also took a jab at the U.S. and its allies like Australia, which have long maintained influence in the region.

"The United States and its accomplices still insist on focusing their energies on deliberately blocking China's development," Wang said, according to a foreign ministry news release.

Cooperation between China and Kiribati drew attention with reports that Beijing would provide financial aid for a feasibility study on upgrading the airstrip on Kanton Island. The narrow ribbon of land sits 3,000 km away from Hawaii, home to the headquarters of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command -- a relatively short distance in the vast, sparsely inhabited region. The government of Kiribati last May acknowledged the project but called a Reuters report on it misleading, saying the runway is for "civilian use only" and meant "to support commercial air travel between the capital Tarawa" and other islands. Kanton is thought to have only several dozen residents, and the economic benefits of upgrading the airstrip are unclear.

Kiribati, along with the Solomon Islands, broke with Taiwan and established diplomatic relations with Beijing in 2019. The Financial Times reported this month that negotiations were underway between China and Kiribati, along with at least one more Pacific island nation, on security pacts similar to the one agreed by the Solomon Islands and China in April.

Some observers said it was possible that such a deal could allow Beijing to send military forces to Kiribati.

During World War II, Japan targeted the Southern Pacific in hopes of cutting off Australia from the U.S. Some of the war's bloodiest fighting to place on Guadalcanal, part of the Solomon Islands, and on the Gilbert Islands, which include Tarawa and most of the rest of Kiribati. The runway on Kanton Island was built by the U.S. military at the time. Since the war, Australia and the U.S. have consistently maintained influence in the region.

On a 2012 visit to the U.S., then-Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said the Pacific Ocean was big enough to accommodate both the U.S. and China, hinting Beijing would favor dividing the region into Chinese and American spheres of influence. Since then, China has been working to win friends there.

Beijing recently put forward draft outcome documents for a meeting with 10 Pacific island nations, including the Federated States of Micronesia. The draft agreement seeks greater security cooperation, among other bilateral efforts. Some observers said China's ultimate goal is to undermine Micronesia's Compact of Free Association with the U.S.

Japan warns Ukrainian evacuees against work at adult entertainment establishments

Justice Minister Yoshihisa Furukawa said Friday that there have been cases in which Ukrainians who have fled to Japan were working in hostess clubs and other adult entertainment establishments, warning that such work is not allowed under their visa status. “There have been cases in which evacuees (from Ukraine) have been reported to be working at certain types of establishments they are not allowed to” work at, Furukawa said after a Cabinet meeting. A total of 1,055 Ukrainians had fled to Japan as of Wednesday, according to the government. Evacuees are allowed to switch to a visa status that allows them to stay in Japan for a year and work. But the residential status does not allow them to work at hostess clubs, bars or adult entertainment facilities that are restricted under the adult entertainment law. Furukawa said the Immigration Services Agency has sent written notifications to Ukrainian evacuees to make them aware such work is a violation of their visa status.

The minister expressed concerns that some evacuees could become victims of human trafficking. Globally, the United Nations’ refugee agency has said that some Ukrainian refugees have become victims of human trafficking, while UNICEF in March warned children fleeing the war are at heightened risk of human trafficking and exploitation.

RCAF CRC01 CL60 departed Halifax, Nova ScotiaTrudope on this ACand 'drew' "crowds" in an obviously staged event-how much did you pay the 10 year old Justin?

Trudeau draws crowd during visit to Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market

Hundreds of people gathered at the Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market on Saturday morning as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stopped by, greeting vendors and residents who clamoured for a photo. Trudeau is in town for the annual general meeting of the provincial Liberals. Ten-year-old Hanna Aris wept as she hugged Trudeau, saying she'll be sharing the photo they took together with friends and classmates. "I guess I attracted him with my tears and we took a picture together," she said afterward. "It was amazing. I don't think it will ever happen again." Aris says she likes Trudeau "because he lets the refugees come to Halifax and Canada and lets them have a better life, and he's so pretty." The Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market is always a busy spot on Saturdays, but was even more so today because of Trudeau's visit, which lasted about45minutes.

Economic Schedule for week of May 29th, 2022-Mkts close tomorrow

The key report scheduled for this week is the May employment report. '''Other key reports include the March Case-Shiller house prices-cause over-bloated prices are so wonderful for the Mortgage Backed Securities machine-really they are. May ISM Manufacturing and Service surveys, and May Vehicle Sales.

  • Monday, May 30th -

All US markets will be closed in observance of Memorial Day.

  • Tuesday, May 31st -

The consensus is for a 20.0% year-over-year increase in the Comp 20 index for March.

Since this just 'baked in' already-even though a %20 YoY is a complete disaster it will be celebrated

9:00 AM: FHFA House Price Index for March 2022. This was originally a GSE only repeat sales, however there is also an expanded index.

9:45 AM: Chicago Purchasing Managers Index for May.

10:00 AM: Dallas Fed Survey of Manufacturing Activity for May.

  • Wednesday, June 1st -

7:00 AM ET: The Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) will release the results for the mortgage purchase applications index.-another YUGE drop that won't matter to J-J-Janet and the inkjets.

10:00 AM ET: Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey for April from the BLS.

Jobs openings increased slightly in March to 11.549 million from 11.344 million in February. The number of job openings (yellow) were up 36% year-over-year.

10:00 AM: ISM Manufacturing Index for May. The consensus is for the ISM to be at 54.5, down from 55.4 in April.

10:00 AM: Construction Spending for April. The consensus is for a 0.5% increase in construction spending.

2:00 PM: the Federal Reserve Beige Book, an informal review by the Federal Reserve Banks of current economic conditions in their Districts-they will us this to confirm only 50bp rate hikes and then the pause in Sept-since it's a survey they can get it to say/ tell whatever story they wantRemember they already trotted out Atlanta FRB President Bostic to do the cover work for them, and non-voting member-so they can just say see we did THIS all on our own and did not factor in his statements.

All day: Light vehicle sales for May. The consensus is for light vehicle sales to be 14.5 million SAAR in May, up from 14.3 million in April (Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate). Wards Auto is forecasting a decline in sales to 13.4 million SAAR.

  • Thursday, June 2nd - these doesn't matter much at all becasue they actually show some truth and often diverge from the Gubmint ones released the next day-see below

8:15 AM: The ADP Employment Report for May. This report is for private payrolls only (no government). The consensus is for 280,000 payroll jobs added in May, up from 247,000 in April.

8:30 AM: The initial weekly unemployment claims report will be released. The consensus is for 210 thousand unchanged from 210 thousand last week.

  • Friday, June 3rd -

Employment Report for May. The consensus is for 320,000 jobs added, and for the unemployment rate to decline to 3.5%. There were 428,000 jobs added in April, and the unemployment rate was at 3.6%.

==these are literaly the biggest joke (data-wise) they have going becasue all these #s represent is a rolling avg of the last 10 years of 'collected' data and are a self-repeating feedback loop. For example if over the last 10 years if that 'data' sez 15k construction jobs were 'created' then POOF! they were created last month. They changed all this shit in the 90's like the fake CPI/PPI #s they continue to produce (and say that inflation has peaked for the 25th time)-totally worthless. You know what is going on in your local and these do not show that at all-certainly doesn't in this area as Assnutz Newsome still pays peopple to not work.

San Francisco School District Drops 'Chief' From Job-Titles, Cites Native-American Concerns

San Francisco’s public school district, which not too long ago underwent a recall election fueled by its controversial priorities, said it will remove the word “chief” from all job titles to avoid offending the Native American community.

Gentle Blythe, a spokesperson for San Francisco Unified Schools District (SFUSD) told the San Francisco Chronicle that the word “chief” will no longer be used in job titles because of its connotations with Native Americans. “While there are many opinions on the matter, our leadership team agreed that, given that Native American members of our community have expressed concerns over the use of the title, we are no longer going to use it,” Blythe said, reported The Chronicle. The word “chief” entered English via Old French and shared the same Latin origin with words such as “capital” and “captain.” In the 17th century, English settlers started to use the word to describe the headmen of indigenous tribes of America.

The SFUSD’s website lists a dozen officials who have the word “chief” in their titles, including Chief Technology Officer Melissa Dodd, Chief of Staff Jill Hoogendyk, and Chief General Counsel Danielle Houch. As of May 26, these titles remain unchanged on the website. The school district, which has approximately 10,000 employees, has not yet decided what top officials will be called instead of chiefs. Blythe clarified that the name change does not mean demotion. “By changing how we refer to our division heads we are in no way diminishing the indispensable contributions of our district central service leaders,” the spokesperson explained. The decision comes about three months after a recall vote that decisively ejected three members from the San Francisco Board of Education. According to San Francisco Mayor London Breed, voters were frustrated because the school district had been focusing on things other than its “fundamental job.” “It was really about the frustration of the board of education doing their fundamental job, and that is to make sure that our children are getting educated, that they get back into the classroom,” Breed said in February on NBC programming. “That did not occur.”

As an example of the school district’s misplaced priorities, Breed pointed to a now-shelved plan to find alternative names for 44 schools that weren’t even open at that time. In January 2021, the SFUSD unanimously approved a decision to start replacing names of schools named after prominent figures who allegedly have connections to injustices in history, such as slavery, oppression of women, and “inhibiting societal progress.” The namesakes that were planned to be dropped, in addition to U.S. Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt, included two-time Secretary of State Daniel Webster, Spanish missionary Junipero Serra, American revolutionary Paul Revere, and Francis Scott Key, the author of the lyrics for “The Star Spangled Banner.” The plan was met with immediate opposition from the district’s families and the general public. The backlash continued until board president Gabriela López announced that the district would focus on reopening those schools instead of finding new names for them. López was ousted in this year’s recall election.

Colombia presidential race to runoff; leftist vs businessman

A leftist "former rebel"( - i.e. C_A) and a populist businessman have taken the top two spots among the six candidates in Colombia’s presidential election and are heading to a runoff showdown in June, delivering a blow to the country's political class. In a blow to Colombia's political class, a leftist former rebel and a populist businessman took the top two spots among the six candidates in the country's presidential election Sunday and headed to a runoff showdown in June.

Leftist Sen. Gustavo Petro led the results with just over 40% of the votes, while independent real estate tycoon Rodolfo Hernández finished second with more than 28%, election authorities said Sunday evening. A candidate needed 50% of the total votes to win outright and the run-off election.

Voters in the South American country went to the polls amid a polarized environment and growing discontent over increasing inequality and inflation.

Petro has promised to make significant adjustments to the economy, including tax reform, and to change how Colombia fights drug cartels and other armed groups. Meanwhile, Hernández, whose spot in the runoff contest came as a suprise, has few connections to political parties and promises to reduce wasteful government spending and to offer rewards for people who report corrupt officials.

There has been a series of leftist political victories in Latin America as people seek change at a time of dissatisfaction with the economic situation. Chile, Peru and Honduras elected leftist presidents in 2021, and in Brazil, former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is leading the polls for this year’s presidential election. Mexico elected a leftist president in 2018.

this is not really a news thang but is it not completely convenient that a Swedish driver wins the Indy 500 as Sweden is about to join NATO.

These cars all used to differ quite a bit, mechanically speaking, but they are all what are known as SPEC racers now-they don't like using that term but they all come from same supplier/manufacturer and share common ECU's (Electrical Control Units) something that did not occur up until about 10 years ago-so they have the ability to push the 'go fast' button if they want someone to do better than the others. This has existed in Formula 1 for many years-all you have to do is look up Pastor Maldanado 'winning' the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix just as the PDVSA contract for sponsorship was coming up for renewal-PDVSA is Venezuela's National Oil Company and PDVSA wrote a check for $40m in 2010 to put this guy in the car-had no business being there. Hugo Chavez totally responsible for that a little bird told me a while back

Anyway this current winner also bought his way into F1 and did nothing for 4 years.

His career prior to F1 was nothing special that warranted a jump to F1-but as they say money talks and bullshit walks. He has won a few races but there are people who had way better results than him in the lower series-so bags of money got him where he is at imo.

But good for him to have won this race as just being able to be there proves you have some talent but the point is that Sweden is trying to join NATO and a Swedish driver wins "the All-American Race"

elon can say he wants his money back all he wants-he has to prove adverse material effect

and just like the statement king next door he can say it all he wants.

He needs the SEC and/or the FTC to prove it and/or a non-comped third-parrty accounting firm-another see ya later suckers.

Good luck

They are desperate to unload it to him at $52.40....it's a $40 stock right now and barely.

It's worth $15 or at the most $20.

>how is it possible that Elon so blatantly violated the $ 15,000,000 Rule

gotta file within 10 days and he din't but there have been way worse cases-they are just choosing to selectively apply the rules so they make sure he buys it at a currently $14 premium

It isn't even worth much moar than that as a whole

Plus Billy Boi's short is gonna fuel the TSLA rise so that won't be the issue any longer-he did that on purpose because what is a few billion when you are worth $130B right?

Totally nuffin

>>136508

Let's say that William put on his 'short pants' where that lime X is and added as it rode down. It doesn't have much farther to go to get back to the peak.

They did that to set a floor in it because once he covers it's gonna go up again and they "fight" in public but they both know the game here.

It doesn't hit it's collateral (for loans) threshold because you've got a built in buying pressure from Billy Boi.

Pretty masterful way to force him to buy it at that price and the premium he paying ($14 over) on a $40.17close on friday price is probably what the entire thing is worth.

Uranium Investors Await Price Rally to Revive Namibia Projects

Namibia’s finance minister said uranium miners are waiting for prices to recover before reviving projects in Africa’s biggest producer of the ore, which is needed for nuclear power in a world shifting away from fossil fuels.

The semi-arid southwest African nation is investing in water facilities and is planning a second desalination plant to supply mines in the dry Erongo region in anticipation of higher uranium prices attracting investors, according to Finance Minister Ipumbu Shiimi.

“There are a number of uranium projects in the pipeline just waiting for the price to recover,” Shiimi said in an interview from Davos on Thursday. “If the price reaches $65-$70 a pound, then that will trigger more investment in uranium.”

There’s been a revival in demand for nuclear power since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as nations scramble to reduce their dependence on fossil fuel. That’s spurred a rally in uranium, with prices more than tripling from a 2016 low to $63.75 a pound in April.

The UK plans to triple its installed nuclear power capacity by 2050, and Belgium is negotiating to keep two reactors open. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol plans to make nuclear energy central to the nation’s climate goals. California, birthplace of the US anti-nuclear movement, is reconsidering plans to close its only remaining set of reactors. For now, only two of Namibia’s three mines are producing the nuclear fuel Rossing Uranium Mine and Husab Uranium controlled by Chinese investors. Australia’s Paladin Energy Ltd. plans to resume commercial production at its Langer Heinrich mine by 2024.
