Heritage vs Allegiance
My Dad, rest his soul, was a WW II vet, a proud American who flew his American Flag on a tall flagpole in our front yard every day.
Both of his parents were Dutch immigrants. Many of his friends were Dutch. We all went to a church and a school where nearly everyone there was Dutch.
One year, my sister-in-law gave him a Dutch flag for Christmas, but he never used it. It stayed in a box in his garage.
One day I asked him why he didn't fly the Dutch flag.
He said, "Because I'm American, not Dutch,"
He wasn't forsaking his heritage, he was just showing the world where his allegiance was.
