Saudis Raise Oil Prices More Than Expected Amid Asia Rebound
Saudi Arabia raised oil prices for its biggest market of Asia by more than expected as demand rises with the region’s main economies easing coronavirus restrictions.
The increase for July shipments resumes a streak of hikes that started in February and was only broken when state producer Saudi Aramco cut prices from record levels for this month. Aramco raised its key Arab Light crude grade for Asian customers by $2.10 a barrel from June to $6.50 above the benchmark it uses. The market was expecting a boost of $1.50, according to a Bloomberg survey of refiners and traders.
The kingdom, the world’s biggest oil exporter, has raised prices for shipments sold under long-term contracts after futures surged following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Crude has climbed more than 50% this year to almost $120 a barrel. The market has tightened as flows from Russia drop due to US and European sanctions. In addition, Asian countries such as China and Singapore are ending lockdowns that crimped demand in the past two or three months. OPEC+ agreed on Thursday to accelerate output increases. The 23-nation cartel, led by Saudi Arabia and Russia, said it would add 648,000 barrels a day to the market in each of July and August, about 50% more than its moves in recent months. Saudi Arabia sends more than 60% of its crude exports to Asia, with China, Japan, South Korea and India being the biggest buyers.

U.S. will allow two companies to ship Venezuelan oil to Europe
Italian oil company Eni SpA and Spain's Repsol SA could begin shipping Venezuelan oil to Europe as soon as next month to make up for Russian crude, five people familiar with the matter said, resuming oil-for-debt swaps halted two years ago when Washington stepped up sanctions on Venezuela. The volume of oil Eni and Repsol are expected to receive is not large, one of the people said, and any impact on global oil prices will be modest. But Washington's greenlight to resume Venezuela's long-frozen oil flows to Europe could provide a symbolic boost for Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. The U.S. State Department gave the nod to the two companies to resume shipments in a letter, the people said. U.S. President Joe Biden's administration hopes the Venezuelan crude can help Europe cut dependence on Russia and re-direct some of Venezuela's cargoes from China. Coaxing Maduro into restarting political talks with Venezuela's opposition is another aim, two of the people told Reuters. The two European energy companies, which have joint ventures with Venezuelan state-run oil company PDVSA, can count the crude cargoes toward unpaid debts and late dividends, the people said. A key condition, one of the people said, was that the oil received "has to go to Europe. It cannot be resold elsewhere."
Washington believes PDVSA will not benefit financially from these cash-free transactions, unlike Venezuela’s current oil sales to China, that person said. China has not signed onto Western sanctions on Russia, and has continued to buy Russian oil and gas despite U.S. appeals.
The authorizations came last month, but details and resale restrictions have not been reported previously.

Saudi Arabia wealth fund PIF to invest $185m in Jordan's Capital Bank Group
the Saudi wealth fund, PIF, has taken a 23.97 per cent stake in Capital Bank Group (CBG), one of Jordan’s bigger financial institutions and with a presence in Iraq and wider region. Through a $185 million subscription agreement, PIF (or Public Investment Fund) will receive 63 million new shares issued by CBG.
This deal reinforces PIF's strategy of ‘exploring new investment opportunities in the MENA region that support the creation of long-term strategic economic partnerships’. The Jordanian Group has a ‘strong financial and credit position’ after the acquisition of the assets and branches of Bank Audi in Jordan and Iraq, as well as Société Generale - Jordan over the last 12 months.

Once the regulatory approval is given, the PIF funds will raise CBG’s capital, and raising total shareholders’ equity to around $846 million. Capital Bank Group plans to offer new services and products in markets that it operates in as well as through its other entity, Capital Investments. The Capital Bank Group has assets of 6 billion Jordanian dinars ($8.4 billion), while the total equity of its shareholders is about JD472 million ($665 million).

Pope Francis said on Saturday he would meet soon with Ukrainian officials to discuss the possibility of a visit to their country. Francis disclosed the coming meeting in a question-and-answer session with children in one of the Vatican's main courtyards. A Ukrainian boy named Sachar asked him: "Can you come to Ukraine to save all the children who are suffering there now?"

Gene Sperling says job growth should give Americans 'a bit more confidence' Senior adviser to President Biden Gene Sperling said Sunday the president's $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan provided "resilience" to the U.S. economy, despite some economists blaming it for the current inflation crisis.
Sperling was tapped by Biden in March 2021 to oversee the rollout of the American Rescue Plan Act, which was passed by Democrats without any Republican support.
Democrats continue to argue that the plan rescued the country from a looming economic depression and that pumping more money into the government via legislation like Biden’s Build Back Better plan will eventually bring down costs and temper inflation, which hit a whopping 8.3% in May.
Economists like Steven Rattner and Larry Summers, who both served under President Obama and donated thousands to President Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign, have repeatedly criticized the Biden administration for overheating the economy with the American Rescue Plan that sent $1,400 to most Americans. Sperling was asked by "Fox News Sunday’s" John Roberts to respond to recent comments by JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon predicting a looming economic "hurricane."
"We don’t know if it’s a minor one or Superstorm Sandy .**. You better brace yourself," Dimon said last week
Sperling said it’s not all doom and gloom and that the American Rescue Plan provided the economy with the "resilience" it needed to weather multiple impacts. "I would be more reassuring than that statement for a few reasons," Sperling said. "No. 1, one of the things we've seen come from the American Rescue Plan is resilience to this recovery. You know, John, I had reporters calling me when Delta hit, when Omicron hit, when Putin went into Ukraine, saying is that it? Will that derail the recovery? And, so far, we’ve seen resilience, and I think that has a lot to do with the American Recovery Act. "Secondly, you mentioned the job numbers which were, as you say, very positive — 390,000 jobs created, 3.6% unemployment," he continued. "But there was something else there, which The Washington Post called the ‘great return to work.’ We've now seen 4.2 million Americans return to work — just three, four hundred thousand in this last month. I think that gives a lot of confidence and reassurance to this economy.

Japanese companies plan to repurchase 4.2 trillion yen ($32.4 billion) of their own shares this fiscal year, nearly double the amount from a year earlier as businesses reroute cash stockpiled during the pandemic toward investor rewards. Hitachi will repurchase 200 billion yen of its own shares, marking the first buyback in eight years and a record for a single tranche. Phone carrier NTT will buy back 400 billion yen and Apple supplier Murata Manufacturing will repurchase up to 80 billion yen in the first buyback executed in roughly a decade. This comes as the Japanese economy and corporate earnings head toward recovery. Funds on hand among listed companies that closed their books in March stood at 99 trillion yen on Dec. 31, up 16% from the end of 2019. Nikkei reviewed stock buyback plans for the current financial year released by listed companies in April and May and found the total has soared by 94% from the same period last year, touching a high not seen since fiscal 2006.

Japan’s Kishida Set to Stay on Kuroda Path, Party Official Says
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is likely to want the Bank of Japan to stick with its current policy direction even after a change of governor, according to a senior ruling party member.

Nishida’s comments come amid strong interest over who will succeed Kuroda when he steps down next spring.
