ECB President Christine Lagarde started with the pre-approved hawkish comments, blaming Putin for both weaker growth forecasts and higher inflation outlooks, promising to end the bond-buying and start hiking rates in July. But then, the question of 'fragmentation' loomed (the fact that peripheral bond yields/spreads are decoupling - in a bad way - from the core, since she stopped buying everything), and the ECB boss appeared to fold like cheap lawn chair. Lagarde says it is necessary to ensure monetary policy is transmitted through the whole area: “we need to make sure there is no fragmentation.” She notes there are existing instruments with the reinvestment capacity under the PEPP. “And if it is necessary, as we have amply demonstrated in the past, we will deploy either existing or new instruments that will be made available.” Lagarde states that "within our mandate we are committed to preventing fragmentation risks within the euro area."

The Federal Reserve released the Q1 2022 Flow of Funds report today: Financial Accounts of the United States. The net worth of households and nonprofits fell to $149.3 trillion during the first quarter of 2022. The value of directly and indirectly held corporate equities decreased $3.0 trillion and the value of real estate increased $1.7 trillion.

Household debt increased 8.3 percent at an annual rate in the first quarter of 2022. Consumer credit grew at an annual rate of 8.7 percent, while mortgage debt (excluding charge-offs) grew at an annual rate of 8.6 percent. Net worth as a percent of GDP is down slightly from the all-time high in Q4. This includes real estate and financial assets (stocks, bonds, pension reserves, deposits, etc) net of liabilities (mostly mortgages). Note that this does NOT include public debt obligations. Household percent equity (as measured by the Fed) collapsed when house prices fell sharply in 2007 and 2008.
In Q1 2022, household percent equity (of household real estate) was at 69.9% - up from 69.2% in Q4, 2021. This is the highest percent equity since the 1980s. U.S. household wealth declined for the first time in two years in the first quarter of 2022, edging down to $149.3 trillion as a drop in the stock market outweighed further gains in home values, a Federal Reserve report on Thursday showed.
Household net worth declined by more than $500 billion from a record $149.8 trillion at the end of last year, the Fed's quarterly snapshot of the national balance sheet showed. The drop was driven by a $3 trillion fall in the value of corporate equities, while real estate values climbed another $1.7 trillion. It was the first decline in household wealth since the first quarter of 2020, when the onset of the coronavirus pandemic shook financial markets and caused a short but deep recession.
Still, the report showed household balance sheets overall remained healthy through the first three months of the year - some $32.5 trillion above pre-pandemic levels - and looked likely to continue to support strength in consumer spending in the face of high inflation. That said, stock markets have continued weakening into the second quarter over concern about a surge in inflation to 40-year highs and whether the Fed's aggressive response to it could stall the economy. That suggests Americans' wealth likely took another hit from the start of April onward.

After two mediocre auctions this week, when both the 3Y and 10Y sales tailed with subpar internal metrics, moments ago the week's last sale, that of a 29-year 11-month reopening, and taking place just a day before the summer's most important CPI print, priced in what was without doubt the week's best auction.
Pricing at a high yield of 3.185%, today's sale of $19 billion in ultra long dated paper, came in well above last month's 2.997% and was the first 3%+ yielding auction since March 2019. Yet despite the 3.185% yield, the coupon on the auction was below 3%, and was still 2.875%, same as the recent past. One final note on the pricing: the high yield stopped through the When Issued 3.200% by 1.5bps, the biggest stop through since March.
The bid to cover on the auction was 2.351, not far from last month's 2.382 and modestly above the six auction average of 2.336. The internals were also solid, with Indirects taking down 69.0%, in line with recent auctions but above the six-auction average of 66.7%. And with Directs taking down 16.9% (also above the 13.2% average), Dealers were left holding just 14.08%, which wasn't a record low but wasn't too far from it (the all time low for the series was 12.1% in March). Overall, a very solid auction,curiously taking place less than a day before Friday's closely watched CPI report is released, and one which helped push yields across the curve modestly lower.

Mortgage rates jump, reaching 5.23%
Average long-term U.S. mortgage rates made a swift jump this week, further squeezing cash-strapped American homeowners. On Thursday, a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 5.23%, according to Freddie Mac. That's up from last week's average of 5.09%. It's also a significant uptick since a year ago when 30-year fixed-rate mortgage rates averaged 2.96%. Until April, average rates hadn't exceeded 5% in more than ten years, according to the mortgage buyer. The recent rise in mortgage rates comes "on the back of increased economic activity and incoming inflation data," Freddie Mac’s Chief Economist Sam Khater said. It also comes just ahead of a Federal Reserve meeting where the Fed is expected to raise its main borrowing rate by another half point.

Social Security benefits likely to climb by 8% next year, official says
Social Security recipients could receive the biggest cost-of-living raise in decades as a result of red-hot inflation, which has quickly eroded the buying power of retired Americans.
An official with the Social Security Administration estimated that benefits could see a cost-of-living adjustment as high as 8%, or an increase of about $132.64 per month, in early 2023. That would bring the average check to about $1,790. Should Social Security beneficiaries see an 8% increase in their monthly checks next year, it would mark the steepest annual adjustment since 1981, when recipients saw an 11.2% bump. The annual Social Security change is calculated based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, or the CPI-W, which jumped 9.4% over the past year.
"Looking at the CPI-W trends we're seeing so far this year, it's likely we'll have a COLA closer to 8% than to 3.8%," said Stephen Goss, the chief actuary of the Social Security Administration, in a recent webinar with the Bipartisan Policy Center on Social Security. The Social Security Administration will release the final adjustment percentage in October. It will take effect in December. An increase of 8% is "good news for the beneficiaries who are currently eligible for benefits," Goss said. "They will get a relatively high increase in their benefits." The estimated figure could still be subject to change and ultimately hinges on whether inflation has peaked or will remain near a record high. Many economists have warned that prices could be "painstakingly slow" to come down.
The average benefit in 2022 jumped by 5.9%, which amounted to a monthly increase of $92 for the average retired American, bringing the full amount to $1,657, the Social Security Administration announced last year. But soaring inflation has already eroded the entirety of the increase, according to calculations by the Senior Citizens League.
At the end of April, the total shortfall for an average benefit was $162.60.
Since 2000, Social Security benefits have lost roughly 30% of their purchasing power due to inadequate adjustments that underestimate inflation and rising health care costs, according to the Senior Citizens League.

Moar on that pic in the bun-Paul Newman drove a 935 at LeMans in 1979 (he was VERY good at it-had his own Indycar Team with Mario Andretti) and they almost won it-finished second and not far behind the winner who basically did almost the entire race distance himself as the other drivers were a bit out of there league-bought the ride. He was not a 'natural' at it-by his own admission-but he was dedicated and spent the time learning and listening-he had a great teacher in Mario Andretti too. He was around a lot at the places I was at-very gracious and all he wanted to do was race-did not care about the fame-he never signed autographs either and I never asked for one.
A funny story: He was telling a rather lewd story to a few of the other owners-this was during a test session and there was no spectators around so he got to the part where he was going to tell the really R-rated(I think-as I never heard it finish) part of it and he looked over at me and muh sibling and then said "I can't tell the rest of this story with those kids around"-so they went off somewhere else to finish it"

Firefighters responding to reports of another military aircraft down in Imperial County
The Imperial County Fire Department has confirmed it is responding to a downed aircraft near the site of Wednesday's Osprey crash. Military officials confirmed that they've received reports it is a military aircraft. The crash happened near Palo Verde about 35 miles north of Yuma, not far from the site of Wednesday's crash that killed five Marines. Our sister station KYMA reports that the Imperial County Fire Department has requested the assistance of nearby naval air facilities to help with the response.
