Europe’s Top Russian Gas Buyer Is Getting 60% Less Than Ordered
German energy giant Uniper SE said it’s receiving 60% less gas than ordered from Russia after Moscow limited supplies via its biggest pipeline to Europe. The Dusseldorf-based company said it’s currently replacing the missing volumes with gas from other sources. The cuts are deeper than the 25% shortfall Uniper disclosed on Wednesday. “We are in close exchange with the German government,” the company said in a statement to Bloomberg.
Russia stepped up the use of energy as a weapon by further cutting natural gas shipments via the Nord Stream pipeline, a move that prompted Economy Minister Robert Habeck to accuse the Kremlin of trying to drive up prices.

US Manufacturing Output Unexpectedly Shrinks In May
Despite collapsing macro data (and regional manufacturing surveys slumping), analysts forecast a fifth straight month of increased US industrial production in May (although at a considerably slower pace of just +0.4% MoM). Industrial production did rise in May - but only by 0.2% MoM...However, even more notable was the fact that US manufacturing output contracted in May (-0.1% MoM vs +0.3% MoM exp and +0.8% in April)...Utilities and Mining rose in May (+1% MoM and +1.3% MoM respectively).
Capacity utilization rose modestly to 79% from 78.9% in April, revised down from 79%.
And finally, we note that the Dow Jones INDUSTRIAL Average has tumbled back to earth and reconnected with US INDUSTRIAL production...Putting the 'mean' in mean-reversion for investors. But it is amazing just how long The Fed can hide reality with a few trillion dollars.

Anxiety over a Fed-induced US recession - as the central bank battles stagflation - have prompted a plunge in prices in the energy complex.
With Atlanta Fed's GDPNOW (KANGZZZ!) model now forecasting a recession has started - and inflation expectations rising - FedSpeak this morning confirmed their hawkish commitment to 'whatever it takes' to slay the inflation dragon, whether that means sparkjng a recession or not...WTI prices fell back below $110, but remain above the Biden SPR plan levels. Wholesale Gasoline prices are down hard this morning also. The SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production ETF dropped 7.2% (entering bear market territory) and is on pace to fall for an eighth day, which would mark its worst string of declines since June 2020. The S&P 500 Energy Index is down 16% this week and on pace for its worst weekly decline since March 2020's COVID lockdowns.

ECB Tool to Avert Debt Crisis 2.0 Takes Shape as Market on Edge
Details are emerging of how the European Central Bank plans to stave off undue panic in government bond markets as investors worry a repeat of the continent’s sovereign-debt crisis of the last decade may be on the horizon. The ECB’s Governing Council held an emergency meeting Wednesday as the prospect of the first interest-rate increases in a decade to tackle record inflation sent Italian yields to their highest since 2013, widening the gap over equivalent German notes.
Officials’ announcement later, that work on a new instrument will be sped up, triggered a rally that lasted into the weekend. But its longevity hinges on them delivering something convincing in the coming weeks.
The early signs have offered some reassurance. Nothing is certain yet, though, and there’s much discussion about how feasible and effective the emerging instrument will be, while some flag legal issues as a possible impediment to its development.
“There are a lot of doubts on the firepower of the new tool and whether there would be enough support within the Governing Council,” said Mohit Kumar, a managing director at Jefferies International.
President Christine Lagarde told euro-area finance ministers Thursday that the tool will kick in if the borrowing costs for weaker nations rise too far or too fast, according to people briefed on their discussions. The instrument may be triggered if bond spreads widen beyond certain thresholds or if market moves exceed a certain speed, she said.
In terms of how it will look, people familiar with the matter describe a bond-buying mechanism where other securities in the ECB’s portfolio will be sold so as not to interfere with efforts to curb the spike in consumer prices.
Countries that benefit from it would have to meet certain conditions to avoid concerns the ECB is financing governments outright. The hope is that work on the new instrument will conclude in time for its July 21 policy decision, when rates are set to rise by a quarter-point. There’s also the reshaping of the ECB’s PEPP program, which was rolled out as the Covid-19 crisis erupted but where net purchases ended in March.
Officials aim to flexibly reinvest maturing debt to support peripheral bond markets. People familiar with their plans say that about 17 billion euros ($17.7 billion) of bonds expire each month, with about 12 billion euros of that coming from core countries -- money that can be redirected to struggling markets.
That, they say, creates a defense that may ease stress for now. Flexibility may also involve front-loading reinvestments -- meaning the ECB could buy new bonds before older securities mature, the people said. The ECB faces challenges in German courts over the PEPP program, while a previous challenge over the public sector purchase program saw the ECB have to provide information to justify the policy.

Samsung temporarily reduces procurement amid inventory pressure
Samsung Electronics is temporarily halting new procurement orders and asking multiple suppliers to delay or reduce shipments of components and parts for several weeks due to swelling inventories and global inflation concerns, sources have told Nikkei Asia.
The notification by the South Korean tech titan applies to components for multiple key product lines, including TVs, home appliances and smartphones, four people familiar with the situation said, and the postponement of orders involves a wide range of components across chips, electronics parts and final product packages. The move by Samsung, the world's No. 1 smartphone and TV maker and one of the leading home appliance providers, is the latest sign that electronics makers are pessimistic about the economic outlook amid global inflation risks.
Samsung told suppliers that the company needs to closely review its inventory levels of both components and final products to ensure stock on hand is manageable, according to the sources. Two people said the move will last until the end of July. One of the people said shipments from that source's company have not been completely halted but the volume of the company's planned shipment to Samsung for July has been slashed by 50%.
Samsung's inventory assets reached 47.6 trillion won ($36.9 billion) at the end of March, up from 41.4 trillion won in December, according to its first quarter earnings report. The ratio of inventory assets to total assets also jumped to 10.8% from 9.7% during the same period. The South Korean tech giant's notice to suppliers comes in stark contrast to its previous plan last month, when it told suppliers that it had a relatively healthy view of the year ahead and that it still planned to ship at least 270 million smartphones in 2022, a similar level as last year, Nikkei Asia earlier reported. Chinese makers Xiaomi, Vivo and Oppo, by contrast, have scaled back orders by at least 20% due to the lockdowns in China and weakening demand in the European market for the coming quarters.

Steel prices tumble in East Asia on China lockdown glut
The price for hot-rolled coil steel has hit a 14-month low in East Asia as demand for the material, used to make a range of products from automobiles to home appliances, takes a hit from China's zero-COVID strategy.
The standard 1.6 mm-thick coil is now priced at around $780 per ton in cost-and-freight contracts, down 3% from a week prior and 19% from a recent high of $960 in mid-April. The material serves as an indicator for exports and other economic activity in Japan, South Korea, mainland China and Taiwan. Its recent plunge stems from falling demand in China, where zero-COVID restrictions, including the monthslong lockdown in Shanghai, have dampened production of cars, appliances and more. Inventories are piling up in the meantime. According to the China Iron and Steel Association, large steelmakers had roughly 30% more inventory in early June than a year earlier. Though Shanghai lifted its lockdown on June 1, its manufacturing sector has yet to fully bounce back. The glut of steel has led to cheaper Chinese exports of hot-rolled coil. Indian steelmakers have also reduced prices after the government in late May increased export tariffs on certain steel materials.
Many market watchers expect low prices to persist for some time. "The offer price for Asian exports constantly fall below the $800 mark per ton," according to one steel-trading company.

Four Moroccan women accuse French tycoon of sexual harassment
Four women have pressed charges in Morocco against French insurance tycoon Jacques Bouthier, currently under arrest in Paris on charges of raping a minor, a rights group said Friday. Bouthier is accused of various acts of "people trafficking, sexual harassment and verbal and moral violence," between 2018 and this year, said Karima Salama, a lawyer from the Moroccan Association for the Rights of Victims (AMDV). "An enquiry has been opened and we have faith in the justice system," she said at a press conference in the northern port city of Tangiers, where the four alleged victims, aged from 26 to 28, had been employed by Bouthier's firm. Bouthier, 75 and one of France's richest men, is ex-CEO of insurance group Assu2000, later renamed Vilavi.
Three of his Moroccan alleged victims told journalists on Friday about their experiences, using sanitary masks and dark glasses to hide their identities. "He asked to sleep with me and when I said no, he asked me to introduce him to a sister, a female cousin or a friend, saying he would give me a nice present in exchange," one said. The women said they had been sacked after refusing to "give in to harassment and blackmail" over their employment by Bouthier and other French and Moroccan executives.
The women said they had faced repeated sexual harassment and intimidation as well as threats to their jobs, in a city where many struggle to find work. One said he had presented them to men working at the firm, telling them: 'If you bring in contracts, there will be beautiful Moroccan girls'. "Jacques Bouthier... believes that with his financial power he can get away with anything, in complete impunity," said AMDV chief Aicha Guellaa.
Bouthier, was indicted on May 21 and arrested by Paris prosecutors after a preliminary investigation into accusations of people trafficking and rape of a minor. He is also being prosecuted for conspiracy to kidnap, kidnapping in an organised gang and possession of child pornography.
