Uganda Claims to Discover 31 Million Tons of Gold Ore

A spokesperson from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development in Uganda, Solomon Muyita, said that there was an estimated 320,158 metric tonnes of refined gold in the country after several surveys were conducted. These reports from Uganda are aimed at attracting gold miners and investors in the crypto sector.

Over the past five years, the value of one ounce of gold increased by 48% against the US dollar. However, this increase is very small compared to the growth of Bitcoin’s price and the entire cryptocurrency market. Muyita said that the discovered gold could start being mined immediately. Additionally, a Chinese company known as Wagagai Mining has already commenced plans to mine in the area.*The company obtained a gold production license in March this year and has a 21-year lease to mine gold in the country.

The Chinese company will start operations within the year. The company has invested $200M towards constructing a refining facility. Despite all the gold discovered in the country, the mining difficulty is notably high, and this impacts the amount of gold that is actually mined. Around 2500 to 3000 metric tonnes are mined every year.

Early this year, the Ugandan parliament passed a mining law that will pave the way for developing a state mining corporation. The company will have a 15% stake in every mining activity in the country, and investors will have a production-sharing agreement with the government.

US pledges $200B to G7 infrastructure project to counter China’s Belt and Road Initiative

The United States is pledging $200 billion to a G7 infrastructure project intended to counter’s China’s multi trillion-dollar Belt and Road Initiative.

The "Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment" was relaunched by President Biden and other Group of Seven leaders on Sunday at their annual gathering being held this year at Schloss Elmau in Southern Germany. Altogether the G7 leaders pledged to raise $600 billion in private and public funds over five years to finance needed infrastructure in developing countries. The U.S.’ $200 billion portion will come from grants, federal funds, and private investment over that time period to support projects are intended to tackle climate change, improve global health, gender equity and digital infrastructure.Biden went at lengths to insist the money was not "aid or charity." "It’s an investment that will deliver returns for everyone," he said, adding that it will allow countries to "see the concrete benefits of partnering with democracies."

He suggested that additional funds – upwards of hundreds of billions – could come from multilateral development banks, development finance institutions and sovereign wealth funds.

Chinese President Xi Jinping launched China’s Belt and Road Initiative scheme in 2013. The nearly ten-year multi trillion-dollar effort involves development and infrastructure programs in more than 100 countries aimed at creating a modern version of the ancient Silk Road trade route from Asia to Europe.

Western officials have long argued that the initiative traps receiving countries in debt with investments that benefit China more than the hosts. The G-7 program responds to China's so-called Belt and Road Initiative, which Western officials have long argued traps receiving countries in debt and with investments that benefit China more than their hosts. The White House says the initiative seeks to leverage $200 billion in U.S. investment over the next five years, along with a similar amount from G-7 allies, to boost infrastructure development in lower- and middle-income nations.

It adds that most of the funding will come from the private sector, sovereign wealth and global development funds, rather that direct taxpayer dollars. The U.S. says the G-7 backed effort promotes responsible investments that aim to benefit the communities they are made in.

Among the first initiatives are a $2 billion solar farm investment in Angola in Southwest AFrica, $320 million for hospital construction in Ivory Coast, in West Africa, and $40 million to promote regional energy trade in Southeast Asia. In a jab at China, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the G-7 is offering "sustainable, quality infrastructure" and will be "listening closely to the recipient countries."

Saudi Arabia Injects Over $10 Billion in Liquidity-Starved Banks

The Saudi Central Bank placed about 50 billion riyals ($13 billion) as time deposits with commercial lenders, according to people familiar with the matter, seeking to ease the worst liquidity crunch in over a decade.

The intervention started just before the US Federal Reserve’s interest-rate hike this month, and consisted of money provided to banks at a discount to the three-month Saudi Interbank Offered Rate, or Saibor, used as a benchmark to price loans, the people said, asking not to be identified as the information is private. The central bank, also known as SAMA, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Liquidity conditions as measured by Saibor are the tightest since late 2008, when the price of crude collapsed below $40 a barrel. The extent of the funding stress among Saudi banks has little precedent outside periods when oil prices were crashing or global crises like the credit crunch of 2008-2009. This year, by contrast, Saudi Arabia is on track to run its first budget surplus in about a decade after seeing revenues soar on the back of a rally in oil prices above $100 and rising production. The funding from the central bank came in at least three separate tranches so far, with the first and second injection consisting of three-month deposits that totaled around 15 billion riyals each, the people said. It made at least one more placement in recent days that included both shorter and longer maturities, they said.

In a sign the latest injections by the central bank are already having an impact, the Saibor rate fell by about 17 basis points from Friday to 3.13% on Sunday, according to data compiled by Bloomberg, its biggest drop in over a month. The action reflects growing concerns about costly liquidity for banks in Saudi Arabia and its impact on the economy as authorities look to mobilize capital to power the kingdom’s mega projects. To ease the immediate funding constraints, the central bank recently also extended the tenor on its repo facility to a maximum of 13 weeks from four. Saudi Arabia’s finance minister told Bloomberg last month that the government would hold excess oil revenues in its current account until at least early next year, as it looks to break an oil-linked boom-bust cycle that has typified the economy in the past. Bankers had been expecting high oil prices to more quickly translate into government deposits that would ease the liquidity crunch. Growth in bank deposits has lagged behind Saudi credit expansion driven largely by a boom in mortgages. That has squeezed the money market while the government withholds its oil windfall as part of a more conservative approach to fiscal spending.

Saudi Arabia is set for another year of double-digit growth in consumer lending while deposits are up less than 4% so far in 2022. In 2020, the central bank extended over 100 billion riyals to local banks in liquidity injections and to cover the costs of loan deferrals for small businesses hit by the pandemic.

Home Showings Across United States Fall 24 Percent, Mortgage Rates Remain Elevated

Home showings across the United States have fallen, according to a report by the National Association of Realtors (NAR), with all four regions registering a decline.

Home showings—when a potential buyer takes a private home tour with an agent—were down by 24 percent year-on-year in May, with total showings across the country at 785,005, said the NAR SentriLock Home Showings Report. SentriLock is a lockbox and real estate management solutions company. All four regions in the United States saw a decrease in showings year-on-year, with the Northwest falling by 55 percent, Midwest by 29 percent, West by 27 percent, and the South by 14 percent.

Total SentriLock cards fell 2 percent YoY to 214,868. The cards allow realtors access to Sentrilock lockboxes—which hold keys to a home and allow communal access to all real estate agents—and indicate the number of realtors who conduct the showing.

The number of showings per card, which reflects the strength of buyer interest per listed property, decreased 23 percent YoY in May nationwide. Region-wise, showings per card in the West fell by 29 percent, the South by 23 percent, and the Midwest by 22 percent. Only the Northeast registered an increase at 45 percent. Meanwhile, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB)/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI) fell by two points to 67 in June, which the organization called a “troubling sign” for the housing market and broader economy. According to NAHB Chair Jerry Konter, the six consecutive monthly declines of HMI is a “clear sign of a slowing housing market in a high-inflation, slow-growth economic environment.”

This is the lowest HMI reading since June 2020. The index had hit a record high of 90 at the end of 2020 when the pandemic triggered strong demand for homes. The fall in home showings is happening as mortgage rates remain at elevated levels. A 30-year fixed-rate mortgage had an average interest rate of 5.81 percent as of June 22, according to data from Freddie Mac.

Realtor.com is expecting home prices and mortgage rates to continue climbing while home sales drop as buyers get priced out from homeownership, based on a June 13 analysis of market trends. The rise in mortgage rates is driven by the U.S. Federal Reserve hiking interest rates to control inflation, the company noted.

“Rising interest rates have shifted the foundation of the economy as well as the housing market. So many homebuyers take out mortgages so that rising rates affect how expensive homeownership is,” said the company’s Chief Economist Danielle Hale. “It’s causing buyers to make tough trade-offs and disrupting the housing market.”

Jamie Dimon just creamed his pants

Russia "Defaults" on Foreign Debt for First Time Since 1918

Russia defaulted on its foreign-currency sovereign debt for the first time in a century, the culmination of ever-tougher Western sanctions that shut down payment routes to overseas creditors.

For months, the country found paths around the penalties imposed after the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine. But at the end of the day on Sunday, the grace period on about $100 million of snared interest payments due May 27 expired, a deadline considered an event of default if missed.

It’s a grim marker in the country’s rapid transformation into an economic, financial and political outcast. The nation’s eurobonds have traded at distressed levels since the start of March, the central bank’s foreign reserves remain frozen, and the biggest banks are severed from the global financial system.

But given the damage already done to the economy and markets, the default is also mostly symbolic for now, and matters little to Russians dealing with double-digit inflation and the worst economic contraction in years.

Russia has pushed back against the default designation, saying it has the funds to cover any bills and has been forced into non-payment. As it tried to twist its way out, it announced last week that it would switch to servicing its $40 billion of outstanding sovereign debt in rubles, criticizing a “force-majeure” situation it said was artificially manufactured by the West.

“It’s a very, very rare thing, where a government that otherwise has the means is forced by an external government into default,” said Hassan Malik, senior sovereign analyst at Loomis Sayles & Company LP. “It’s going to be one of the big watershed defaults in history.”

A formal declaration would usually come from ratings firms, but European sanctions led to them withdrawing ratings on Russian entities. According to the documents for the notes whose grace period expired Sunday, holders can call one themselves if owners of 25% of the outstanding bonds agree that an “Event of Default” has occurred.

With the final deadline passed, focus shifts to what investors do next.

They don’t need to act immediately, and may choose to monitor the progress of the war in the hope that sanctions are eventually softened. Time may be on their side: the claims only become void three years on from the payment date, according to the bond documents.

“Most bondholders will keep the wait-and-see approach,” Takahide Kiuchi, an economist at Nomura Research Institute in Tokyo.

Russia’s Default Tussle With Bondholders Is Only Just Starting

During Russia’s financial crisis and ruble collapse of 1998, President Boris Yeltsin’s government defaulted on $40 billion of its local debt.

The last time Russia fell into default vis-a-vis its foreign creditors was more than a century ago, when the Bolsheviks under Vladimir Lenin repudiated the nation’s staggering Czarist-era debt load in 1918.
