WTI Extends Gains After 'Delayed' DoE Data Show Cushing Stocks Near 'Operational Low' Limits
After "systems issues" 'delayed' last week's inventory, supply, and demand data from the EIA, the admin will report this week's data as well as last week's combined following API reported a notable build the prior week and a surprise draw last week.
API (last week)
Crude +5.607mm
Cushing -390k
Gasoline +1.216mm - first build since March
Distillates -1.656mm
API (this week)
Crude -3.799mm
Cushing -650k
Gasoline +2.852mm
Distillates +2.613mm
So over the last two weeks, API reports (net) a small crude build, notable Cushing draw, large gasoline build and small distillates build.
Oil prices are notably higher again today following reports that Iran-deal-talks have failed and news that Libya has halted oil exports. Additionally, OPEC's pre-meeting reportedly concluded with no discussion of oil policy, focusing instead on administrative affairs, including an update to the group’s manifesto of guiding principles known as its Long-Term Strategy.
Meanwhile, a deluge of ugly macro data provides some fodder for the oil bears (though it is being dominated by supply fears for now). “Recession fears are just that -- fears,” said Stephen Brennock, an analyst at brokerage PVM Oil Associates Ltd. “In the meantime, oil fundamentals remain solid.”
pay no attention to demand destruction bro...none at all*
So all eyes are back on the official inventory and demand data...
DOE (net of the two weeks)
Crude -2.762mm
Cushing -782k
Gasoline +2.645mm
Distillates +2.559mm
The official data shows a small crude draw (API showed a small crude build), Cushing a 6th weekly draw of the last 7 (confirming API's net draw). On the product side both gasoline and distillates showed unexpectedly large inventory builds (also confirming API's data)...The headline draw in crude stockpiles of 2.76 million barrels was boosted by the withdrawal of another 6.95 million barrels of crude from the SPR last week. See cap#1
However, as Bloomberg's Javier Blas noted in a tweet: "Over the last 2 weeks, the US gov has injected 13.7 million barrels from the SPR into the market. And yet, commercial oil stockpiles still fell 3 million barrels over the period. Just imagine if the SPR wasn't there. Or what would happen post-Oct when sales end"
He's right you know.... see cap #2
Cushing inventories are getting very close to operational-low-limits again. Cushing storage tanks require a minimum level of oil to maintain normal operations, which traders estimate at ~20M barrels. See cap#3
Gasoline demand finally appears to be succumbing in a more substantial way to record high gasoline prices. As Bloomberg reports, the past two weeks show the four-week moving average of product supplied falling back below 9 million barrels a day,*meaning demand is now more than 600 thousand barrels a day below typical seasonal levels. US Crude Production rose to its highest since April 2020. WTI was hovering around $113.50 ahead of the EIA data and extended gains modestly after the data. Finally, we note that the tight supply situation in oil (especially European) is revealing itself in the WTI-Brent spread, grew to $6.19, the widest in almost three months. “European demand will remain robust, especially as natural gas supplies run out, while the North American demand for crude is weakening,” said Ed Moya, senior market analyst at Oanda.
This is not good news for President Biden as prices are rising.

https://www.macrotrends.net/2566/crude-oil-prices-today-live-chart
It's a refinery problem...can habs all the crude you want-can't process it then no gasoline-why prices are staying where they are at and the system is just "La-la-la-la-la...wut did you say about drops in usage again?...sorry can't hear you"

Court orders liquidation of crypto hedge fund Three Arrows
A British Virgin Islands court ordered the liquidation of Three Arrows Capital Ltd. after creditors sued the cryptocurrency hedge fund for failure to repay debts.
Nichol Yeo, a partner at law firm Solitaire LLP, said Three Arrows Capital is considering its options and seeking legal advice in the British Virgin Islands. Three Arrows Capital suffered losses in recent weeks due to a punishing decline in the value of cryptocurrencies. Twin forces have hit the digital asset ecosystem: a broad market selloff sparked by the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate increases and concerns over individual crypto coins and firms. Bitcoin’s dollar value has fallen by more than a third this month.
Two executives from the global advisory firm Teneo*were appointed by the British Virgin Islands to oversee the liquidation of assets and safeguard them, according to people familiar with the proceedings. The executives, senior managing directors Russell Crumpler and Christopher Farmer, joined Teneo after the company acquired financial firm KPMG’s Cayman and British Virgin Island’s restructuring business in January, according to Teneo’s website.
Creditors to whom Three Arrows owes debts will be able to file their claims online, the people said. The process for debtors to reclaim their assets is likely to be lengthy, they said, noting the liquidation order would mark the start of that process.

UBS to Pay $25 Million SEC Penalty Over Complex Options Strategy
UBS Group AG agreed to pay the US Securities and Exchange Commission $25 million in penalties to settle allegations that some its advisers recommended a complex investment strategy involving options that may not have been in their clients’ best interest.
UBS investment advisers marketed and sold YES, or Yield Enhancement Strategy, for about a year starting in February 2016 even though some didn’t understand the risks themselves, according to the SEC. The Swiss firm’s UBS Financial Services Inc. unit failed to provide adequate training and when investors lost money both money managers and clients said they were surprised. The firm, which didn’t admit or deny wrongdoing, agreed to pay a $17.4 million penalty plus more than $7 million in disgorgement and interest. “UBS is pleased to have amicably resolved this matter,” it said in a statement. “UBS appreciates the SEC’s acknowledgment that in early 2017, UBS voluntarily remediated the issue by enhancing its risk control framework and strengthening its training program for the strategy.”
UBS told clients that the strategy historically generated gains of 3% to 5% per year but it suffered losses in early 2018 when market volatility began to increase, eventually losing 18% that year, according to an SEC settlement order released on Wednesday.

Kamala Harris says she’s with Biden ‘if’ he runs, stoking fresh 2024 uncertainty
Vice President Kamala Harris triggered new questions Wednesday about President Biden’s 2024 election plans — saying she wanted to walk back a remark indicating that Biden had already decided to run for a second term. “The president intends to run and if he does, I will be his ticket-mate,” Harris told reporters on Air Force Two en route to San Francisco. “We will run together.” According to a pool report from Erin Logan of the Los Angeles Times, “The White House said [Harris] wanted to clarify comments she made on CNN a few days ago.” In the CNN appearance, which took place Monday, Harris declared emphatically that she and Biden are a package deal for Democrats.
“Joe Biden is running for re-election and I will be his ticket-mate,” the veep told host Dana Bash.

>>140113 pb Notional Amounts of Derivative Contracts by Contract Type and Maturity (Precious Metals) and most of this is Silver
Posted the above the day after the report came out but failed to notice that the change was made but that was corrected here the next day:
>>140198 pb Addendum to the Precious Metals Derivatives Report put out last night*
At least someone else noticed this too with the bulk being held at JP Morgan and Shitibank-which is what was shown in the OP
JPMorgan Chase and Citibank Hold 90 Percent of All Gold and Other Precious Metals Derivatives Held by All U.S. Banks
Last Tuesday, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) released its quarterly report on derivatives held at the megabanks on Wall Street. As we browsed through the standard graphs that are included in the quarterly report, one graph jumped out at us. It showed a measured growth in precious metals derivatives at insured U.S. commercial banks and savings associations over the past two decades and then an explosion in growth between the last quarter of 2021 and the end of the first quarter of this year.
In just one quarter, precious metals derivatives had soared from $79.28 billion to $491.87 billion. That’s a 520 percent increase in a span of three months. (See Figure 18 at this link. The last ten years of the graph is shown above.)
Having studied these quarterly reports since the 2008 financial crash, we knew where to head next. We went to the graphs in the OCC report showing the breakdown of different categories of derivatives at specific banks. Table 21 showed that precious metals contracts at JPMorgan Chase had spiked to $330.123 billion as of March 31, 2022. The same table showed that Citigroup’s insured commercial bank, Citibank, held $114.148 billion in precious metals derivatives.
According to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, as of March 31, 2022, there were 4,796 federally insured banks and savings associations in the U.S. Combine that figure with the latest report from the OCC and it means that just two banks, JPMorgan Chase and Citibank, control 90 percent of the precious metals derivatives of all 4,796 insured financial institutions in the U.S.
We checked the previous OCC report for the quarter ending December 31, 2021. It showed that at year-end 2021, JPMorgan Chase had reported only $28.182 billion in precious metals derivatives versus $330.123 billion three months later – a staggering increase of 1,071 percent.
There was a footnote that attempted to explain the bizarre picture of what was going on in the gold market. It read as follows: “Beginning January 1, 2022, the largest banks are required to calculate their derivative exposure amount for regulatory capital purposes using the Standardized Approach for Counterparty Credit Risk (SA-CCR). Under SA-CCR gold derivatives are considered precious metals derivative contracts rather than an exchange rate derivative contract resulting in an increase in reported precious metals derivative contracts compared to prior quarters….”
See the Addendum on this posted above-it shows what they did and when
The footnote raised more questions than it answered. According to legal definitions available at Cornell Law School (not to mention common sense), an “exchange rate derivative contract” is “a cross-currency interest rate swap, forward foreign-exchange contract, currency option purchased, or any other instrument linked to exchange rates that gives rise to similar counterparty credit risks.”
Why would a gold derivatives contract have ever been classified as an exchange rate contract? Gold contracts are to foreign exchange contracts what zebras are to a centipede.
There is the decided perception that Wall Street megabanks have been hiding from the public the true extent of their involvement in the gold market through some ginned-up derivative definition.
In addition to the wild growth in precious metals exposure at JPMorgan Chase, Citibank’s precious metals holdings in one quarter had grown from $6.979 billion to $114.148 billion. But Bank of America, a peer bank to JPMorgan Chase and Citibank, showed no such gargantuan increase in its precious metals holdings from year-end 2021 to March 31, 2022. The OCC reports that Bank of America held $27.32 billion in precious metals contracts on December 31, 2021 versus $29.441 billion on March 31, 2022. An increase of just 7.76 percent.
https://wallstreetonparade.com/2022/06/report-jpmorgan-chase-and-citibank-hold-90-percent-of-all-gold-and-other-precious-metals-derivatives-held-by-all-u-s-banks/
*Bottom line: This (OCC Precious Metals Derivative Reporting) is now USELESS in trying to determine who is doing what regarding Silver Derivative Contracts Positions and what also make me go look again was that Bank of America did not go down at all and they should have since whatever arrangement(s) they have with JP Morgan via those lease agreements-those should have decreased as all of that (from last year) were less than 1 year of maturity.
What we do know (now) is that Shitibank along with JP Morgan (surprise.../s) is the other big player in the Gold Derivative market when in the past it was all hidden in the FOREX "bucket". The last glimpse of what they have done will remain the Q4 2021 OCC report as this is now a combination of Gold and Silver contracts and the very little to almost non-existent Platinum/Palladium/Rhodium etc

N.Korea may be behind new $100 mln cryptocurrency hack, experts say
North Korean hackers are most likely behind an attack last week that stole as much as $100 million in cryptocurrency from a U.S. company, three digital investigative firms have concluded.
The cryptoassets were stolen on June 23 from Horizon Bridge, a service operated by the Harmony blockchain that allows assets to be transferred to other blockchains.
Since then, activity by the hackers suggests they may be linked to North Korea, which experts say is among the most prolific cyber attackers. U.N. sanctions monitors says Pyongyang uses the stolen funds to support its nuclear and missile programmes. The style of attack and high velocity of structured payments to a mixer - used to obscure the origin of funds - is similar to previous attacks that were attributed to North Korea-linked actors, Chainalysis, a blockchain firm working with Harmony to investigate the attack, said on Twitter on Tuesday. That conclusion was echoed by other investigators. "Preliminarily this looks like a North Korean hack based on transaction behaviour," said Nick Carlsen, a former FBI analyst who now investigates North Korea's cryptocurrency heists for TRM Labs, a U.S.-based firm. There are strong indications that North Korea’s Lazarus Group may be responsible for this theft, based on the nature of the hack and the subsequent laundering of the stolen funds, another firm, Elliptic, said in a report on Thursday.
"The thief is attempting to break the transaction trail back to the original theft," the report said. "This makes it easier to cash out the funds at an exchange."
If confirmed, the attack would be the eighth exploit this year – totalling $1 billion in stolen funds – that could be attributed to North Korea with confidence, accounting for 60% of total funds stolen in 2022, Chainalysis said
