Euro zone bond yields lower, Italy remains in focus
Euro zone government bond yields edged down on Tuesday, as bond markets took comfort from a pullback in lofty gas prices while keeping one eye on how political turmoil in Italy unfolds. And with the European Central Bank expected to lift interest rates for the first time since 2011 when it meets on Thursday and unveil details of a new tool to contain stress in bond markets, investors appeared reluctant to push yields too far in one direction or another. Germany's benchmark 10-year Bund yield is down almost 20 basis points (bps) so far this month, setting it up to break a seven-month rising streak. Concern about European gas supplies has stoked recession fears, and as it replaced inflation at the top of investors' worry list bond yields have pulled back from multi-year highs. News on Monday that Gazprom has invoked force majeure on some gas supplies has raised fears that Russia will keep the Nord Stream 1 pipeline closed beyond July 21, when the annual maintenance period ends. Still, European gas prices on Monday fell to their lowest in over a week TRNLTTFMc1 with analysts saying a significant degree of bad news is now priced in by markets. German Bund yields were down 2.5 bps in early trade at 1.19 DE10YT=RR. Italian borrowing costs were also lower, with 10-year bond yields down 3 bps at 3.34% IT10YT=RR.
Fresh political upheaval in Italy has weighed on Italian bonds, but with no fresh news to drive markets, a modest recovery appeared to be taking hold. "For gas and BTPs alike, the absence of a further escalation seems sufficient for a recovery," said Michael Leister, head of interest rate strategy at Commerzbank.
In Italy, Prime Minister Mario Draghi is expected to address parliament on Wednesday. Draghi tendered his resignation last week after the populist 5-Star Movement refused to back the government in a confidence vote at the Senate.

Malaysia PM vows to defend assets after $2bn seizure by Sulu heirs
In regards to Sulu Group claims, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob today gave assurance that the government will protect the country’s assets using every all channels available. “They (Sulu Group) brought the case to court, so we will also protect our assets through legal channels. “I give assurance not to compromise or even budge an inch in defending the country’s rights and sovereignty,” he told reporters after opening the 2022 National Security Conference (PKN22) held in conjunction with National Security Month celebration here today. He said this in response to the issue concerning the Sulu Group who were reported to have threatened Malaysia’s interests and assets overseas, especially the assets belonging to government-linked companies. On July 12, assets of two Petronas subsidiaries in Azerbaijan were reported to have been seized by the Sulu Group, who were claiming AS$14.92 bilion (RM62.59 bilion) from Malaysia.
The move was said to be part of legal efforts launched in 2017 by the heirs to receive compensation over land in Sabah which they claimed their ancestor had leased to a British trading company in 1878. Ismail Sabri said he was made to understand that Petronas and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar would give an explanation to Parliament soon on the seizure of Petronas assets in Azerbaijan. He said the Cabinet had, on July 14, agreed to set up a special task force to study, monitor and formulate an appropriate action plan based on the provision of the law to address the issue of Sulu Group claims on Malaysia. “A special task force has been set up to look into the issue in a comprehensive manner, not only concerning Petronas assets but also Malaysia’s other assets abroad. There are many government-linked companies which have assets overseas and this will be looked into thoroughly,” he said.
When asked about the need to mobilise security forces to defend the country’s assets overseas, Ismail Sabri said: “It’s not easy to bring security forces to other countries, unless under the United Nations (UN) flag.” Last March, a French arbitration court ruled that Malaysia, which inherited the lease obligations after it gained independence from Britain, must pay at least US$14.92 billion to the descendants of the last Sulu Sultan.

BofA Survey Shows "Full" Investor Capitulation Amid Dire Pessimism
Investors slashed their exposure to risk assets to levels not seen even during the global financial crisis in a sign of full capitulation on “dire” economic outlook, according to Bank of America Corp.’s monthly fund manager survey.
Global growth and profit expectations sank to an all-time low, while recession expectations were at their highest since the pandemic-fueled slowdown in May 2020, strategists led by Michael Hartnett wrote in the note. Investor allocation to stocks plunged to levels last seen in October 2008 while exposure to cash surged to the highest since 2001, according to the survey. A net 58% of fund managers said they’re taking lower than normal risks, a record that surpassed the survey’s global financial crisis levels. Bank of America’s survey, which included 259 participants with $722 billion under management in the week through July 15, said high inflation is now seen as the biggest tail risk, followed by a global recession, hawkish central banks and systemic credit events. At the same time, the most investors since the global financial crisis are betting that inflation will be lower in the next year, which means lower interest rates, according to the poll. The survey’s findings highlight this year’s flight from risk assets, which has sent the S&P 500 Index into a bear market and led European stocks to their worst six-month drop since 2008. While unlikely, as such a move would represent a credibility-crushing deviation from guidance that the majority of Governing Council members have stuck to since it was laid out at the June 9 policy meeting, the market certainly was freaked out by this trial balloon which most likely was intended to push the Euro higher, and sure enough it achieved its goal: the EURUSD surged 1.1%, or about 100pips, rising above 1.02 after plumbing below parity late last week. Of course, if the ECB disappoints and hikes "only" 25bps on Thursday, expect the entire move to reverse lower. Hoover Dam explosion captured in terrifying video in Nevada with tourists heard saying ‘something’s blown up’
An explosion at the Hoover Dam has been captured on video as thick black smoke can be seen billowing from the historic landmark. Footage posted on social media shows a giant fireball rising at the Nevada monument on Tuesday morning. The Boulder City Police Department confirmed to The US Sun that they have units en route to the scene following an explosion. A tourist visiting the site captured a video showing the fire may have occurred in a building near the dam's base. However, cops have yet to determine what part of the dam the explosion took place. BCPD said Boulder City Fire units are currently at the scene.
