Ukraine and Russia sign deal to get vital grain shipments moving again
Ukraine and Russia signed an agreement Friday morning in Turkey committing to let millions of tons of vital grain supplies ship out from Ukraine's long-blockaded southern ports. Russia has blocked Ukraine's Black Sea ports since its full-scale invasion of the country on February 24, drawing accusations from the U.S. and Europe that President Vladimir Putin has weaponized food. Russian food and fertilizer, which the Putin regime says it has been unable to ship due to sanctions against his country imposed over the Ukraine war, can also be exported as part of the deal, which was brokered and co-signed by Turkey's government and the United Nations. Russia Rejects As "Nonsense" Report Saying Nord Stream Turbine Is Stuck In Transit
Moscow has rejected accusations that it is intentionally stalling the delivery of a turbine crucial for the proper long-term functioning of the Nord Stream 1 Russia to Germany natural gas pipeline, instead placing the blame squarely on the West and its sanctions.
The turbine had been in Canada at a Siemens facility - the only place in the world where it can be worked on - but is now said to be en route back to Russia, only to be held up in Germany, or "stuck in transit", as Reuters reported. But the Kremlin on Friday has rejected this narrative, calling the report "nonsense". Specifically Kremlin officials are rejecting the following: "Reuters reported on Thursday that Russia had not yet given the go-ahead to transport the turbine back to Russia, citing two people familiar with the matter" - given the suggestion Moscow is intentionally delaying for the sake of further stalling gas deliveries to Europe. The conflict is being chalked up essentially to Russian authorities not issuing the proper permits to transport the turbine back, hiding efforts to disrupt energy to Europe by leveraging bureaucratic paperwork.
"The accusations are groundless. The sources are wrong," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, calling the charge "nonsense". Nord Stream 1 was cut to 40% of its capacity starting in June due to what Russia at the time blamed on Canadian sanctions enforcement delaying the turbine's return.
Canada this month said it granted a special sanctions waiver for the turbine's return, citing solidarity with European allies like Germany badly in need of the smooth return of natural gas supply operations.
But now this has descended into a big he said, she said geopolitical fight at a moment diminishing gas supplies to Europe hang in the balance. Again, Russia has sought to stress that it's the turbine holdup due to Western sanctions enforced by Canada to blame for the EU's gas crisis. And according to the latest developments via newswires, Russia is saying it hasn't heard any definitive communications from Siemens:

Realtor.com has monthly and weekly data on the existing home market. Here is their weekly report released yesterday from Chief Economist Danielle Hale: Weekly Housing Trends View — Data Week Ending July 16, 2022. Note: They have data on list prices, new listings and more, but this focus is on inventory. Active inventory continued to grow, rising 29% above one year ago. With fewer owners listing homes for sale this week and last, the rapid recent run-up in active inventory has stalled somewhat. Inventory was roughly even with last year’s levels at the beginning of May and the gains mounted each week until early July. Since then, the market has stabilized just shy of a 30% increase over year ago levels. This is a welcome improvement for shoppers, but the market still lags what was once normal. Note the rapid increase in the YoY change, from down 30% at the beginning of the year, to up 29% YoY now.

The price of silver has softened as industrial demand fell in China due to the country's rigid pandemic restrictions, with benchmark contracts touching a two-year low in recent weeks.
In New York, benchmark futures for silver ended at $18.23 per troy ounce on July 14, the lowest level since July 2020, with the price dipping as low as $18.01 at one point that day.

But demand from China, the world's largest consumer of silver with a share of over 20%, has been lackluster. The country had just lifted Shanghai and other cities from COVID-19 lockdowns, but those cities are seeing signs of a resurgence due to the highly infectious BA.5 omicron variant. Stop purchases by Chinese users "lack strength," said a source at a trading company.

Several top Meta executives, including CEO Mark Zuckerberg, COO Sheryl Sandberg, and the person set to replace Sandberg as COO when she leaves the company later this year, are set to give depositions in a lawsuit about the Cambridge Analytica scandal (via Bloomberg). According to a court document filed earlier this week, Zuckerberg will have to answer questions for up to six hours, while Sandberg could face up to five hours of deposition. The lawsuit, which could wind up as a class action case if a judge agrees to it, alleges that Facebook illegally shared user data with third parties and didn’t adequately protect that data from being abused by bad actors. It stems from a case where Cambridge Analytica, a firm working for Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, was able to scrape data from millions of Facebook profiles without getting permission from those users. This isn’t the first time Zuckerberg will be in the hot seat over the scandal — in 2018, he had to testify in front of Congress, though it’s debatable how effective the questions were. While it seems unlikely that these depositions will contain shocking revelations that remained hidden in the years since the scandal started, the fact that Meta’s top leadership is getting questioned is a big milestone in this case that’s been ongoing since 2018. The depositions are set to happen sometime before September 20th.

Economic Schedule for Week of July 24, 2022-FOMC raises rates 75bp and official GDP report out after the Atlanta FED update (higher-of course or less negative growth but this will be positive well before Sept Mtg)-just before the FOMC announcement on Weds
The key report this week is the advance estimate of Q2 GDP-the same day that the FOMC raise rates 0.75bp Other key reports include June New Home Sales, Personal Income and Outlays for June, and Case-Shiller house prices for May. For manufacturing, the July Richmond, Dallas and Kansas City Fed manufacturing surveys will be released-remember surveys are NOT empirical so plenty of 'wiggle' room for those-always has been. The FOMC meets this week and is expected to raise rates 75 bp.
(They have another huge opp to further eviscerate the short positions this coming week with the GDP releases (both of them) and how 'positive' they wanna make them since the last two FOMC announcements have been short pants on 'fiyah' after-look for moar of that as you had a little pause yesterday after Tues/Wed/Thurs 'up' you can actually see how desperate they are as take most equities and look at it's volume on down days and then it's volume on up days-look at enough of them and you'll see what I am talking about-low volume rises and higher volume drops.)

WHO declares monkeypox outbreak global health emergency
The World Health Organization on Saturday declared the outbreak of monkeypox a global health emergency, the highest level of alert, as cases continue to rise. The WHO reconvened its emergency committee on monkeypox for the second time in a month Thursday to assess the outbreak and its implication on public health. Based on health experts' advice, WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus upgraded the outbreak to a "public health emergency of international concern."
Declaring a global emergency has no direct implications, but it can help raise awareness, as well as increase international cooperation, research and funding. The latest WHO data show some 16,000 monkeypox cases have been reported from 74 countries and regions this year. Europe accounts for the vast majority of cases, followed by the United States.
Infections have been reported since May outside the central and western African regions, where the disease is endemic. The virus has been known to cause illness and fatalities in those regions. Infection cases in Asia remain low. Japan has not reported any infections so far. The majority of confirmed cases in nonendemic countries are male. The WHO says cases have been identified among "gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men" but cautions that anyone who has close contact with an infected person is at risk.
The disease is spread through close physical contact. Symptoms include fever, extensive rash, skin lesions and swollen lymph nodes following an incubation period of five to 21 days.
Although monkeypox can be deadly, it is treatable. There is a vaccine against the disease, but it is in short supply globally. The WHO is so far not recommending mass vaccinations. The name of the virus refers to its discovery in a monkey during an animal experiment in Denmark in 1958. The first transmission to a human was confirmed in 1970. The WHO is now simultaneously confronting three global health emergencies. In addition to monkeypox, polio was designated as such in 2014 and COVID-19 in 2020.

In Tokyo on Saturday, medical staff and elderly care workers also began receiving their fourth COVID-19 vaccinations after the government expanded its eligibility criteria in response to Japan's seventh wave of infections. Last week's decision to begin the vaccinations was aimed at ensuring enough medical and care workers are available when Japan is seeing record numbers of new cases driven by the BA.5 strain. Some medical institutions in the capital have been forced to limit the number of emergency patients they accept and scale back surgical procedures they conduct due to staff shortages caused by a spate of COVID-19 infections.
Previously, the fourth dose was only available to people aged 60 and over and those between 18 and 59 with pre-existing conditions who are considered at higher risk of developing severe symptoms when infected with the virus. A study shows the fourth inoculation has relative efficacy for elderly people but may only provide marginal protection for younger people. The fourth vaccination is available at three mass vaccination sites, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building, for residents of the capital or people who commute into the city.
