Berkshire Hathaway posts massive $43.8 billion loss; operating results improve

The slide in U.S. stock prices punished Berkshire Hathaway Inc's bottom line in the second quarter, as the conglomerate run by billionaire Warren Buffett on Saturday reported a $43.8 billion loss.

Berkshire nevertheless generated nearly $9.3 billion of operating profit, as gains from reinsurance and the BNSF railroad offset fresh losses at the Geico car insurer, where parts shortages and higher used vehicle prices boosted accident claims. Rising interest rates and dividend payouts helped insurance businesses generate more money from investments, while the strengthening U.S. dollar boosted profit from European and Japanese debt investments. Berkshire also slowed purchases of its stocks, including its own, though it still had $105.4 billion of cash it could deploy.

Investors closely watch Berkshire because of Buffett's reputation, and because results from the Omaha, Nebraska-based conglomerate's dozens of operating units often mirror broader economic trends.

Those units include steady earners such as its namesake energy company, several industrial companies, and familiar consumer brands such as Dairy Queen, Duracell, Fruit of the Loom and See's Candies. In its quarterly report, Berkshire said "significant disruptions of supply chains and higher costs have persisted" as new COVID-19 variants emerge and because of geopolitical conflicts including Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

But it said direct losses have not been material, despite higher costs for materials, shipping and labor.

Net results suffered from Berkshire's $53 billion of losses from investments and derivatives, including declines of more than 21% in three major holdings: Apple Inc (AAPL.O), Bank of America Corp and American Express Co (AXP.N).

Accounting rules require Berkshire to report the losses with its results even if it buys and sells nothing.

Buffett urges investors to ignore the fluctuations, and Berkshire will make money if stocks rise over time.

In 2020, for example, Berkshire lost nearly $50 billion in the first quarter as the pandemic took hold, but made $42.5 billion for the full year. Profit rose 10% at BNSF, with higher revenue per car from fuel surcharges partially offsetting lower freight volumes, while profit from Berkshire Hathaway Energy rose 4%.

Berkshire repurchased just $1 billion of its own stock, down from $3.2 billion in the first quarter, and compared with $51.7 billion in 2020 and 2021. Its $6.15 billion of stock purchases fell from $51.1 billion in the first quarter, when it took major stakes in oil companies Chevron Corp and Occidental Petroleum Corp.

Economic Schedule for Week of August 7, 2022

The key report this week is July CPI (and PPI on Thursday)-plus the update from the Atlanta FED GDPNOW which will be done shortly after that (CPI) is released on Weds at 8:30am EST

Also have the Mortgage Banker Purchase Application activity on Weds so that is a big data day-and imo this is the start (all of that above) of the "all clear" signal or the support the FOMC needs to not do another 75bp which they spent all this last week creating the perception that they will be doing in Sept-remember that the CME FEDWatch is a contract that can be bought and sold to produce a result-it actually took them quite a bit of time to get it to reflect the 75bp it currently shows now.

https://www.cmegroup.com/trading/interest-rates/countdown-to-fomc.html

  • Monday, Aug 8th -

No major economic releases scheduled.

  • Tuesday, Aug 9th -

6:00 AM ET: NFIB Small Business Optimism Index for July.

12:00 PM: (expected) MBA Q2 National Delinquency Survey

  • Wednesday, Aug 10th -

7:00 AM ET: The Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) will release the results for the mortgage purchase applications index.

8:30 AM: The Consumer Price Index for July from the BLS. The consensus is for a 0.2% increase in CPI, and a 0.5% increase in core CPI. The consensus is for CPI to be up 8.8% year-over-year and core CPI to be up 6.1% YoY

(and as mentioned many times over the last few months it will show a decrease-they will 'celebrate' it and present it as they have it "under control" and the GDPNOW will be raised quite a bit cause they already went full retard week before last and raised it almost 3 full % points out of negative territory--so that it could be dropped when the housing #s came out this week-and removed any negative view that it had.)

  • Thursday, Aug 11th -

8:30 AM: The initial weekly unemployment claims report will be released. The consensus is for 263 thousand up from 260 thousand last week.

8:30 AM: The Producer Price Index for July from the BLS. The consensus is for a 0.3% increase in PPI, and a 0.4% increase in core PPI.

  • Friday, Aug 12th -

10:00 AM: University of Michigan's Consumer sentiment index (Preliminary for August).

15 Dead As Israel Pounds Gaza, Military Prepares For "Week Of Fighting"

Since the start of Friday's fresh Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, ostensibly toward decapitating the leadership of the Islamic Jihad following the Monday night arrest of its senior commander Bassem Saadi, the death toll has continued to rise, with Gaza's health ministry saying 15 Palestinians have been killed in the attacks so far.

As we previously detailed, the Israeli strikes were 'pre-emptive' in that they were not a response to initial rocket fire from Gaza, as is the usual case, but were launched with a declared intent to degrade the militant group Islamic Jihad's capabilities after days of security incidents along the border with Gaza. Since then, an Israeli official has said some 300 rockets and mortars have been launched from the strip as the two sides are once again on the brink of full-scale war, according to BBC. The last time Israel hit Gaza with what were at the time limited strikes targeting Hamas was mid-July, just after President Biden departed Tel Aviv to travel to Jeddah on his Mideast tour. Importantly, it's the biggest flare-up since the 11-day conflict in May 2021 wherein over 200 Palestinians and a dozen Israelis were killed.

But what the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced as the 'Operation Breaking Dawn' offensive is expected to last at least a week. The military is preparing for "a week of fighting," the IDF said Saturday. By day two of the operation, the IDF cited some 200 rockets launched from Gaza, with at least 30 having landed in Gaza, falling far short of targets in Southern Israeli. The IDF said 130 crossed into Israel with 60 intercepted by the Iron Dome, and the rest reportedly landing in open areas.

Israeli media in a mid-evening update (local time) indicated that some 400 rockets have been fired from Gaza since Friday afternoon, strongly suggesting that Hamas has also joined fighting alongside Islamic Jihad. In a Saturday morning press briefing the IDF said it's already taken out Islamic Jihad commanders and degraded military sites:

In the opening round of Israeli strikes, the military killed one of PIJ’s senior commanders, Tayseer Jabari, whom officials said was planning to attack Israeli civilians near the border. Jabari replaced Baha Abu al-Ata as the group’s commander in northern Gaza after the latter was killed in an Israeli strike in 2019.

In a briefing to reporters Saturday morning, military spokesperson Ran Kochav said the IDF had struck some 40 Islamic Jihad targets in the Gaza Strip, including six weapon manufacturing workshops, two weapons storage sites, six observation posts and five rocket-launching positions.

Whitman downplays US travel advisory on Kisumu, says it is routine

United States Ambassador to Kenya Margaret Meg Whitman has downplayed a recent travel advisory on Kisumu saying “it was a routine security alert”. The envoy who held her first media briefing on Sunday after taking office told journalists that the advisory “does not in any way reflect the U.S views on the outcome of Tuesday’s election.” “The reason we issued the alert is that this is the second largest population of Americans outside of Nairobi. We have a very large number of American citizens and a large number of Embassy personnel in Kisumu,” she said.

Algeria Expresses Interest in Joining BRICS Group

Algeria, Africa’s largest exporter of natural gas, has become the latest country interested in joining the BRICS group, as an increasing number of nations look towards alternative forms of global governance.

Algeria’s president Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced his interest in becoming a BRICS member, joining a number of other powerful nations, including Russia, China, and India. “They constitute an economic and political force,” he said, applauding the group’s service in being an alternative to western-influenced power centers. The bloc is also comprised of other emerging economies, including Brazil and South Africa, with the president noting that Algeria meets “a good part” of the economic conditions required for membership. Tebboune’s comments follow a recent call from Russian president Vladimir Putin urging BRICS leaders to focus their efforts on creating a “truly multipolar system of inter-government relations” in wake of “selfish actions” from the US and other western countries. BRICS member economies account for about 25% of the world’s GDP output, contributing nearly 50% towards global economic growth. Argentina and Iran have already made official applications to join BRICS, while Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Egypt have also expressed interest in joining the bloc.

This is not over BY FAR and trotting out moar 'expurts' saying that this is over is just designed to throw you off of yet another devaluation cycle-you actually have to think that the NYFRB is going to stop doing it's over $2T a night operations to think this is going to arrest the Yens devaluation-so it has a pause and they think it's over....good Luck with THAT

Yen Shorts Crumble As 2022's Hottest FX Trade Comes to an End

Three key pillars of the sell-the-yen trade — a widening US-Japan interest-rate gap, soaring oil prices and the loss of the currency’s haven status — are crumbling as growing recessionary fears keep a cap on yields, put pressure on crude and send investors back into the arms of traditional safe assets. Dollar-yen, which soared 38% from a March 2020 trough to mid-July this year, is in retreat. (The targeted NYFRB Securities Lending Operation is what is "capping yields"-how do you think that fixed rate mortgages dropped when the FOMC was raising Prime?-by continuing to buy Mortgage Backed Securities on a daily basis-last week the total was $3.509B) https://www.newyorkfed.org/markets/desk-operations/ambs

Here is an example of them targeting the 10 year Yield is a VERY obvious way on Weds-this habbens EVERY DAY >>144616 Treasury Curve Inversion Deepens as Yields Jump and Then Plunge.its the NYFRB Operations Stoopid and these 'expurts continue to ignore the between $40 and $50B of this sloshing around the bpnd market as if it has no impact of anything and here are OUR reasons for it..Good try though

And when the Oil Price swoon is over then wut?

An end to what threatened to become the worst-ever drawdown for the currency would be welcomed by businesses to consumers to politicians in Japan, where higher import costs are weighing on a post-pandemic recovery. It would vindicate the resolutely dovish stance of Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda and put pressure on hedge funds who came late to popular short-yen macro strategies. (the NYFRB is also doing arbitrage trades with the BOJ using ours and their 2 and 5y notes as the widening difference in rates between that make it an easy way to generate return-this was a very popular ting to do starting in 20011 as well and it stayed that way until our rates were dropped again-then it became less attractive-and they will continue to do this as the BOJ is NOT going to raise rates anytine soon despite what they say and the FOMC will begin removing our rate hikes in early 2023-despite what they say) Perhaps the most effective handbrake on the yen’s steep decline has been the pull back from ever higher Treasury yields.

The yen is closely correlated to movements in US government bonds as the dynamic of a BOJ keeping rates pinned to the floor even as the Federal Reserve hikes aggressively weighs on relative attractiveness of Japanese assets. Now Treasury yields have retreated from their highs as traders tweak estimates for peak Fed rates and reconsider bonds on fears of a US slowdown.Benchmark Treasury yields have fallen more than 60 basis points from their peak in June to 2.83% on Friday. The yen has strengthened over 3% from its trough to around 135. (not rocket science see under Securities Lending at this link https://www.newyorkfed.org/markets/data-hub) The yen jumped 1.3% last Monday when traders learned that US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi would visit Taiwan, sparking worries of potential retaliation from China. It has rallied more than 4% in the past three weeks as fears of a global recession deepened. Dead-Cat Bounce here no question-and using Pelosi's visit to Taiwan as a reason for anything connected to this is really a stretch-again good luck you are not convincing anyone with this-well you might but I'd be laying on some serious short-bus action the next time this has any strength-because it's not quite done-it needs to retest that recent high of about 128 and only then will you see it turn and go the other way-this is also without the currency swap operations they have done-they've done over $12B with the ECB since june 17th last year and eventually they will turn it towards the Yen-so this may keep showing strength..it is one big manipulated POS and will continue to be that way and wait until Wednesday's CPI release-probably the most anticipated one I have ever seen)

Accidental drowning suspected in death of Arkansas judge

The death of an Arkansas judge whose body was recovered from a lake is being investigated as an accidental drowning, authorities said.

Jeremiah T. Bueker, 48, went missing Saturday night and his body was recovered the next morning from Mud Lake in Reydell, about 75 miles (120 kilometers) southeast of Little Rock, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said. Maj. Gary McClain told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that Bueker went missing after going for a ride on a recreational vehicle. He was spending the weekend with family at a nearby cabin, McClain said. “It appears he decided to go swimming after maybe being dusty and he went missing,” he said. “No one was with him, he was alone.”

The sheriff’s office said crews used sonar to locate Bueker’s body at the bottom of the lake Sunday morning. Bueker was a county district judge for the northern district of Arkansas County.

SoftBank eyes Vision Fund layoffs after posting $23bn loss

SoftBank Group on Monday posted a record loss for the second straight quarter as market turmoil further spread across its portfolio of technology stocks.

In an unusually downbeat presentation, Masayoshi Son, the company's billionaire chairman and CEO, said he will undertake "significant cost reductions" at the Vision Fund including layoffs and becoming more selective in making new investments. "Unfortunately, the amount of investment has been greatly reduced," he said. "Since the financial resources are being squeezed, there are too many hunters who make investments. There will be no sanctuaries." The Vision Fund business had 387 employees as of March, according to SoftBank's annual report.

However, SoftBank also said it will buy back up to 400 billion yen worth of its own shares (that is $2,972,000,000 with current exchange rate) over the next year, in addition to the 1 trillion yen buyback program that runs until November. Son, who is SoftBank's biggest shareholder, has long maintained that the company's stock is undervalued.

The Japanese investment group reported a net loss of 3.16 trillion yen ($23.4 billion) in the April to June quarter, compared with 762 billion yen in net profit for the same period a year ago. The losses were steeper than the previous quarter's 2.1 trillion yen. SoftBank reports unrealized gains and losses on its portfolio of more than 300 tech stocks, most of which are managed by its two Vision Funds. In the latest quarter, the two Vision Funds and the Latin America Fund posted a combined 2.92 trillion yen in investment losses.

The share price of some of its publicly listed holdings, such as South Korean e-commerce company Coupang, U.S. ride-hailing company Uber Technologies and U.S. food delivery operator DoorDash, tumbled amid a global sell-off in the stock market. Some of these stocks have recovered in recent weeks.

Shares of some privately held portfolio companies also declined during the quarter. The cumulative investment return of Vision Fund 2, which has a higher percentage of unlisted portfolio companies than the first fund, fell into negative territory by the end of June, according to SoftBank's financial statement.

Son warned that shares of unlisted unicorns private companies valued at $1 billion or more are "overvalued" compared to listed ones. (but muh stock is 'under-valued') "Listed stocks are priced daily, but unlisted stocks are not," he said. "There are still many managers of unlisted unicorns who think they can raise funds at a higher price because their performance has increased compared to the previous round of financing. "The winter for unlisted unicorns will last much longer [than that for listed ones]."

SoftBank also reported an 820 billion yen foreign exchange loss as the yen's decline pushed up the value of its dollar-denominated debt....(that's not done either despite this from yesterday >>144938 it's just taking a rest)

As for reducing costs, Son said SoftBank is in talks to sell U.S. investment company Fortress Investment Group, which it bought in 2017 for $3.3 billion. Its financial statement does not reflect investment gains or losses in some SoftBank portfolio companies such as China's Alibaba Group Holding, which is classified as an equity method investment. Son has said he prefers to look at net asset value, which SoftBank calculates by adding up the value of the shares it owns and subtracting net debt, as a measure of performance.

and nao you see why Paul Pelosi sold those calls (at a loss-knew this was coming) of Nvidia-and he did that a day too early too-left almost 8% on the table...and carried inventory the killer here-again

Nvidia Plunges After Preannouncing Terrible Q2 Results, Slashes Guidance, Blames "Macroeconomic Headwinds"

Just as stocks were set to blast off right out of the gates as the "most hated rally" accelerates, moments ago investors got a cold shower after video chip giant Nvidia preannounced disappointing Q2 earnings more than 2 weeks early (originally scheduled for Aug 24), blaming the reverse bullwhip effect for taking $1.3 billion of charges "primarily for inventory" and slashing guidance due to "lower sell-in of Gaming products reflecting a reduction in channel partner sales likely due to macroeconomic headwinds" and "challenging market conditions that are expected to persist into the third quarter." The only good news: the company isn't trimming (or ending) its buybacks which will continue as scheduled.

Here are the details:

-Prelim revenue $6.70 billion, far below the est $8.10, down 19% sequentially and up 3% from the prior year reflecting weaker than forecasted Gaming revenue

-Prelim adjusted gross margin 46.1%

-Prelim adjusted operating expenses $1.75 billion

(They don't even want to talk about it-no call today)

-Second quarter results are expected to include approximately $1.32 billion of charges, primarily for inventory and related reserves.

-The only silver lining: buybacks will continue: "We plan to continue stock buybacks as we foresee strong cash generation and future growth."

Pretty bad when that is the best 'result' outta all this-continuing to prop yer own stock

-The shortfall relative to the May revenue outlook of $8.10 billion was primarily attributable to lower sell-in of Gaming products reflecting a reduction in channel partner sales likely due to macroeconomic headwinds. In addition to reducing sell-in, the company implemented pricing programs with channel partners to reflect challenging market conditions that are expected to persist into the third quarter.

-Data Center revenue, though a record, was somewhat short of the company’s expectations, as it was impacted by supply chain disruptions.

-The significant charges incurred in the quarter reflect previous long-term purchase commitments we made during a time of severe component shortages and our current expectation of ongoing macroeconomic uncertainty,” said Colette Kress, EVP and CFO of NVIDIA.

-“Our gaming product sell-through projections declined significantly as the quarter progressed,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. “As we expect the macroeconomic conditions affecting sell-through to continue, we took actions with our -Gaming partners to adjust channel prices and inventory.

-There will be no call today, and instead NVIDIA will host its conference call on the previously scheduled time at Wednesday, Aug. 24, at 2 p.m. PT (5 p.m. ET).

Finally, since we know everyone is concern, yes - Nancy Pelosi dodged the proverbial bullet by dumping all of her NVDA calls two weeks ago (at a loss).

Mkt Fag, Godzilla and Mecha-Godzilla present:Part #1: After the creation of the Federal Reserve system: WW1 began-a little history lesson, (parts 2 and 3 will be posted when completed) Part #2-end of WW1 and America 'prospers'-1920s debt fueled growth that ultimately culminated in 1929s Wall Street crash, Part #3: Roosevelt signs the Gold Act of 1933 (Executive Order 6102), The Bankruptcy(s) of the U.S. Corporation

This is # 6 (we've had a few informal discussions on several topics) they are listed in the final panel #4-in our continuing series of 'Financial/History discussions with Godzilla (and frens)' and after the creation of the FRB in 1913 (covered in the last set of posts) things started to move quickly as WW1 was 'started' a mere 7 months after the Federal Reserve Act was signed into law-we will be jumping around a bit but as always the source material is provided in the very last post of this series and in some cases at the point of mention. '''It is also important to note that this is by no means a complete tale of all the actions that occurred during this time period and we are focused on the main protagonists here: Serbia and the Austro-Hungarian Empire and because of the Alliances between the countries involved were already in place for several years the rest of the participants 'joined in'-except the major supplier of finance the United States-and this was not an accident either (this is explained below). We will touch on a few topics that have been extensively covered such as the Bolshevik "Revolution" and the Wall St crash of 1929 but our goal is to end up at the 1933 Gold Act (Executive Order # 6102 in part #3) and the latest (at the time) Bankruptcy of the United States Corporation

Mkt Fag:"Hello again muh informational frens-it is great to see that you two are getting along now and able to continue these discussions without killing each other."

Godzilla:"Yeah we are soooo over that-there is a common good to be had and putting aside our differences shows everyone else that they can do that too..amiright Mecha?"

Mecha-Godzilla:"Yes i'd have to agree-i was on 'their' side for too long and realize the error of muh ways-just like Abe-San did...his father wasn't the nicest person either but neither was Joe Kennedy and look what John and Robert tried to do so I totally get that..so what are we gonna talk about today?..and Godzilla can you paleeze keep that smelly food in the corner..that is rancid stuff"

Mkt Fag:" Well today I thought we would cover a few topics but as we have in the past keep it light and informal so that the readers may form their own opinions on this so we will first start out with what habbened directly after where we left off from the last post-the creation of the Federal Reserve System in 1913...Mr Mecha Godzilla I believe it is your turn as Godzilla began last time."

Mecha-Godzilla:"yes I will begin...after the Federal Reserve Act was signed into law in 1913 and we, as a world, were thrust into the start of World War 1 but make no mistake-those issues had been simmering for many years prior and it took the creation the Federal Reserve System to make sure the players on both sides were well funded-this is a common theme for ALL wars that are created-being on both sides so that regardless of who "wins"...the system ALWAYS wins-there are no winners in this process for regular people even though it has always declared a war "won" by one side or the other."

Godzilla:" I hafta agree on that and all you need to do is look at the way that Hitler 'embarrassed' the French during the occupation of France by making them sign the Armistice ending hostilities and allowing the Nazis to occupy 3/5ths of France during the opening stages of WW2..it was done in the very same railway car (and in the very same place!) that the Germans surrendered WW1 in 1918-but they thought they were going there to negotiate a surrender and not be forced to agree to what they perceived were draconian terms-so having the French arrive and having to agree to THEIR terms was the ultimate insult-but we are getting a little ahead of ourselves."

Mkt Fag:"Let's back up to the start of WW1 and as already mentioned there were several issues that were already 'boiling' and ready to explode...it took one issue to "trigger" it but let us look at a few of them: the first one is European Expansionism and is one of the top issues imo-you had the British and French at the height of it's colonization period control and other countries just weren't very accepting of this and felt threatened by that since most of those territories were forcibly taken over-you also can't leave out the Dutch here as they certainly had a role in the colonization process but were a bit moar stealth in their approach to it-so what this did was make countries chose sides and you had a recipe for a war based on the two major factions: Allied Powers (Britain and France) and Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire)-and a footnote to this is that Erdogan has basically been attempting to resurrect the Ottoman Empire over the last 25 years or so (he was the mayor of Istanbul in the 90's and then became PM in 2003 and then President in 2014)."

Mecha-Godzilla:"World War 1 was 'started' on July 28th 1914-so only 7 months after the Federal Reserve Act signed and almost to the day-deez niggas din't waste any time and most of what caused it was already simmering in the pot and just needed a spark-which it got-see below."

Mkt Fag:" Keep in mind that you had the banking system drastically changed to benefit the hand-picked 'winners' of the 1908 'panic'-see posts on that at bottom of cap#4-the winners were as follows: Kuhn, Loeb, Bernard Baruch, J.P. Morgan, Eugene Meyer, Paul Warburg, Max Warburg, Jacob Schiff, Louis Brandeis, Alfred Rothschild-there are a few moar but those are the main ones that came out of the 1908 'panic'. It is also important to note that the U.S. was presented as 'neutral' and did not officially enter WW1 until 1917 but because of the monetary system set-up we were 'booming' and our GDP was up 20% between 1914 and 1917-sitting back and profiting from the war we were not really in until the end."

Mecha-Godzilla:"And what in the fukushima was gong on with the YUGE imbalance on 'your side'-there existed a gigantic discrepancy in the amount of purchases (war supplies) and war bonds that the Allied powers bought-over 3 billion dollars in wartime orders and borrowed over 2 billion dollars in bonds but the Central Powers only had purchased $20m-so it was clear who was gonna 'win' that war and all they (US bankers) did was sit back and watch the rest of the world literally destroy itself and laughed all the way to the bank-also noted is that we 'loaned the French and British millions of $'s through our banks and if Germany 'won' all of that would have been worthless."

Godzilla:"The next issue was Nationalism (specifically Serbia) and this has been used time and again to start wars-as if you shouldn't be proud of your 'Nation' but there is a catch to this as what habbens is that these movements start out pretty organic and then get taken over or co-opted (from the inside) and then become something they were never really intended to be-in this case it is a bit different as tensions had been rising about the European Expansionism (i.e. colonization-so they had every right to be wary) issue that was on full retard-mode in the 1800s (the violence starts-and this is not saying that every single example of this is peaceful-by no means-(it's a pattern of taking over an organization to steer it towards a clash with the "other side")-see the above comment about playing both sides as they always are funded by the same people so the system always wins no matter who is declared the 'winner'."

Mecha-Godzilla:"The Serbs had enough of the BS from the Austria-Hungarian/Ottoman Empire and wanted independence and actually tried to form own state in 1876 (fought two declared wars with the Ottomans) and were successful in forming own state in 1878 via the Congress of Berlin-The Russians backed the Serbs and this Congress was supposed to address "the Eastern Question"-well it did for a while until 1914-again just after the creation of the FRB system-isn't this totally convenient that they had already created the system to manage the money flow for the war they all knew was coming?"

Mkt Fag:"So we get to 1914 and you have the Austro-Hungarian Empire measuring it's dick all over Europe (they weren't the only ones as the French and British alliance-and by proxy the Dutch were NOT innocent here either) and the actual trigger to this boiling mass of territorial conflicts was the assassination of the Archduke of Austria (Franz Ferdinand) when he went to Sarajevo and he was there because he also went to Bosnia and Herzegovina to "inspect" territory they took from the Ottomans in 1908-and today it is "one country" but was actually part of the former country of Yugoslavia in between WW1 and WW2 (and the whole issue was conflagrated in the 1990's again-so you see it's never ever been solved but steps were made by 45's administration (specifically Richard Grenell-he made some good progress on basically an unsolvable situation) to try to fix all that damage in this area Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Croatia etc-it has been a mess for hundreds of years and some of those fake nations-like Moldova are now being courted by NATO to fire up all this same bullshit again by having "alliances"."

Godzilla:"Nigga get back on topic!!!...The Austro-Hungarians basically issued an ultimatum to the Serbs (after Ferdinands assasination) which the Serbs rejected-because they told them to dissolve "National Defense" calling it a "Propaganda Arm" of the Serbian Gov't and tried to force them to accept Austro-Hungarian 'authorities' to stamp out this propaganda-that they were going to define-so no wonder the Serbians told them fug off-but accepted all of it (and remember the Russians are on the Serbian side here-this is REALLY important towards the end of WW1 as we will see in Part 2) and that is all it took for a declaration of war between the two with the Germans supporting the Austro-Hungarians and the Russians on the Serbian side-so you see the Balkan area has been a mess, as mentioned by Mkt Fag, for a very long time."

They actually accepted everything in the ultimatum except the above point of having the "authorities" being positioned to decide who was doing what in their own country so it wasn't like they just said no to all of it-it sounds like they were very accommodating in a very unfortunate situation-that Ultimatum was delivered 7 months to the DAY that the Federal Reserve Act was announced to the American public

The July ultimatum of the Austro-Hungarian Empire for Serbia

https://virily.com/culture/the-july-ultimatum-of-the-austro-hungarian-empire-for-serbia/

Mkt Fag:"It is also important to note that in that time period there existed moar alliances between countries so if one was attacked you basically attacked all the others-it is best summed up like this: In the age of imperialism prior to World War I, countries throughout Europe had created alliances. The alliances promised that each country would support the other if war ever broke out between an ally and another Great Power. Prior to WWI, the alliances of Russia and Serbia; France and Russia; Germany, Italy and Austria-Hungary; Britain, France and Belgium; France, Britain and Russia; and Japan and Britain were firmly in place."'''

The alliance, between France, Britain and Russia, formed in 1907 and called the Triple Entente, caused the most friction among nations. Germany felt that this alliance surrounding them was a threat to their power and existence. As tensions continued to rise over alliances, the preexisting alliances fed into other countries declaring war against one another in the face of conflict. These conflicts over alliances — which forced nations to come to the defense of one another — led to the formation of the two sides of World War I, the Allied and Central Powers. By the start of the war, Italy and the United States entered on the side of the Allied Powers, which consisted of Russia, France and Great Britain. The Central Powers, alternately, consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria

Godzilla:" So it was the Central Powers that 'lost' WW1 and it was assumed-wrongly-that Germany would be able to deter Russia from backing the Serbians and this entire declaration of war between these two main 'actors' was a similar mess because although Serbia did not accept the one provision of having the Austro-Hungarians on their territory they even said although they weren't habby with the other provisions there was no reason to have a war about all this-well that din't go with the 'plan' because the Germans had already pledged support to the Austro-Hungarian side (Central Powers) so in essence there was a planned communication breakdown that involved a few others players. The Ultimatum was actually approved on July 19th but it's delivery was postponed until that July 23 date so that the Russians and the French were not able to have any communications about just wtf they were gonna do to fix this and the French were already on the way back from a trip to Russia so when that news was finally announced the Russians said this cannot be allowed to habben. The Serbians even went so far as to submit to international arbitration on that specific point but it was already too late-the system wanted war

Mkt Fag:" This was a case of a result needing to be achieved no matter what the participants said-The King of Prussia even told the German Foreign Office to tell Austria-Hungary that there was no longer any justification for war and that it should content itself with a temporary occupation of Belgrade (Serbia) instead of full on war...but it made NO difference War was in fact declared on July 28, and Austro-Hungarian artillery began to bombard Belgrade the next day. Russia then ordered partial mobilization against Austria-Hungary, and on July 30, when Austria-Hungary was riposting conventionally with an order of mobilization on its Russian frontier, Russia ordered general mobilization. Germany, which since July 28 had still been hoping, in disregard of earlier warning hints from Great Britain, that Austria-Hungary’s war against Serbia could be “localized” to the Balkans, was now disillusioned insofar as eastern Europe was concerned. On July 31 Germany sent a 24-hour ultimatum requiring Russia to halt its mobilization and an 18-hour ultimatum requiring France to promise neutrality in the event of war between Russia and Germany."

Godzilla:"And just like Mothra showing up at the wrong time with those two little girls signing about god knows what-it just spiraled out of control with moar and moar communication breakdowns and participants 'rushing' to join in...there is a reason it was called "the Great War" as it was supposed to be the "'war that ended all wars" but they system had other plans-they had already agreed to have another one just (WW2) as this one started-the culmination of WW1 was the Bolshevik "revolution" and we will get into that portion next as they weren't Russians and it was completely financed by the Rothschild family and planted the seeds for the communists to take out the Tsars of Russia."

So that is how WW1 "started"-it wasn't just the assassination of Franz Ferdinand-this was used as the excuse to let the already planned war-despite some of the participants saying it was no longer necessary-to become the most bloody and ruthless war the planet has ever seen (and still is).... right after the Federal Reserve was formed

Moscow Exchange to reduce use of dollars as collateral

The Moscow Exchange will cut the maximum amount of dollars it will accept as collateral to underwrite transactions, it said on Monday, as Russia is seeks to reduce its dependence on currencies of countries that have imposed sanctions on it.

Russian authorities have voiced concerns about individual and corporate holdings of dollars and other currencies that it terms "unfriendly", calling for their conversion into alternatives. The Moscow Exchange - the country's largest bourse - said it will from Aug 15 halve the proportion of dollars in the collateral that users of its platform provide to carry out transactions to 25% from 50%. De-dollarisation in Russia has gained pace since Western countries imposed unprecedented sanctions after Russia sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine on Feb. 24. The sanctions have impaired Moscow's access to international economic and global trading systems. The central bank said on Monday it planned to differentiate the cost of foreign currency loans for legal entities and their investments in debt securities depending on whether they were denominated in currencies of friendly or unfriendly countries.

China Property Woes Spark Longest Mortgage Debt Halt Since 2015

Chinese banks’ issuance of securities backed by home mortgages has plunged, as the crisis in the nation’s property sector drags down a once-popular and relatively safe investment tool.

Sales of residential mortgage-backed securities have fallen 92% so far this year to 24.5 billion yuan ($3.63 billion), according to data compiled from cnabs.com, a website that tracks asset-backed securities in China. There’s been no RMBS issuance since the end of February, the longest dry spell since 2015.

The slump “reflects weak mortgage origination volume in the first half of 2022 and less-imminent needs for banks to manage their mortgage loan books,” according to Jerry Fang, an analyst at S&P Global Ratings. He said when issuance picks up will depend on mortgage-origination momentum and Beijing’s regulatory stance.

The lack of RMBS sales this year shows the ripple effects of unprecedented property woes that have triggered record defaults by developers and heightened risks for Chinese lenders, especially as owners of unfinished homes have been joining a boycott on mortgage payments. New-home sales plunged 32% in the first half, according to government data, and a proxy for mortgage activity hit its lowest level since at least 2016 despite an effective interest-rate cut for new loans.

Bond-like RMBS had been the most-popular product in recent years for China’s ABS market, with sales driven by state-owned banks. Supported by a surge in mortgages to purchase homes, the amount of principal outstanding reached 1.4 trillion yuan last year, according to cnabs.com. It’s fallen since to 1.2 trillion yuan.

The roughly $300 billion of RMBS sold from 2018 through 2021 made China the world’s second-largest market behind the US, where private-label deals were about $550 billion, Fitch Ratings said in report. While lenders globally package loans and sell them as securities, RMBS issuance isn’t a primary financing channel for China’s lenders. (except that it operates exactly like a ponzi scheme)

So here is yer clue that Ag is gonna get absolutely monkey-hammered on Weds (or very soon)..they NEVER write about just Silver and yet one of the largest manipulators HSBC and UBS is all shits and giggles about it having bottomed..so totally NOT seen a bottom and sticking with muh original statement that after it dropped below $20 it's gonna see $16

Worst-Performing Precious Metal Silver May Have Seen Bottom

Silver’s been the worst-performer among major precious metals in 2022, but prices may have fallen far enough to spark a modest recovery.

The white metal has lost about 11%, weighed down by the stronger US dollar, rising interest rates and slowing growth. But prices could turn higher from later this year as the electronics and photovoltaics sectors support industrial consumption, while retail and jewelry demand look strong, James Steel, chief precious metals analyst at HSBC Securities USA Inc., said in a note early this month. Still, headwinds to the white metal’s rally exist as the world braces for the withdrawal of stimulus and an economic downturn.

While HSBC remains positive, it has cut its forecasts as silver follows gold and copper lower. The bank now sees the average price at $22.25 an ounce for 2022 and at $23.50 for 2023. UBS Group AG expects silver to trade lower to $19 by early 2023. Silver was trading at $20.67 an ounce by 8:37 a.m. in Shanghai, after bouncing back from a two-year low in mid-July. Silver’s trajectory will closely follow gold, and investors should consider buying both metals when the Fed makes a proper dovish pivot and there’s meaningful easing of policy to support growth, said Wayne Gordon, executive director for commodities and FX at UBS Group’s global wealth management unit. “Once we get to that recovery phase in gold, we believe silver can really outperform the yellow metal,” said Gordon.

Gold was little changed at $1,789.42 an ounce, with the dollar steady as traders await a key report on US consumer inflation due Wednesday. Palladium fell and platinum edged higher.

They started off the week with a total of 88,889 contracts today so that is 5k oz per contract which gives you 444,445,000/ozs traded just today-which is a little under half the amount of 2021's annual production and we still have 4 days to go in the week-remember Silver is a key ingredient of all products that require electrical conductivity so I've said this many times before-just where are they going to get the supply fer all this green energy shit?...they never address this..ever

August is a really slow delivery month on the COMEX but September is a big one'
