China’s Huarong Expects $2.8 Billion in First-Half Net Loss
China Huarong Asset Management Co. said it expects a net loss of 18.88 billion yuan ($2.78 billion) in the first half of the year as credit impairments surged even after the state-owned bad loan manager revamped its sprawling businesses and received a $6.6 billion government-orchestrated bailout.
The predicted loss compares with a profit of 158 million yuan the Beijing-based firm reported in the six months through June 30 last year. Credit impairment losses “increased significantly” in the current period, it said in a filing Tuesday without elaborating.
The group said the interim results didn’t meet expectations “because of the impact of volatility in the capital market and downturn in the real estate market, which were caused by various factors such as the recurrence of the Covid-19 pandemic, geopolitical conflicts and pressure in macroeconomy.”
Shares of Huarong have tumbled 66% this year in Hong Kong as investors remained jittery and divided over the industry’s long-term growth prospects, while its perpetual bond plunged to the lowest since its 2021 crisis.
China’s distressed-debt managers, among the major lenders to developers, have been in turmoil amid a deepening property debt crisis and a slowing economy.
Smaller rival China Great Wall Asset Management Co. missed a second deadline at the end of June to publish its 2021 annual report, while China Cinda Asset Management warned in July that net income may drop between 30% to 35% in the first half, renewing investor concerns about the health of the $730 billion industry.
Created following the Asian financial crisis in the late 1990s to safeguard China’s state-owned banks, Huarong and its peers expanded into everything from insurance and leasing to brokerage and trust through cheap borrowing from onshore and offshore markets, and turned into major shadow lenders themselves.
Huarong has been selling non-core assets including its banking and securities arms this year as part of a sweeping overhaul that also involved a government bailout and a change of ownership. The firm posted a net income of 370 million yuan last year after revealing a massive loss for 2020. US Air Force conducts nuclear missile test delayed amid China tension
The U.S. Air Force early on Tuesday carried out a test of an unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile, which was already delayed 12 days to avoid inflaming tension with China.
Air Force Global Strike Command said in a release that the Minuteman III missile was launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California by the 576th Flight Test Squadron a little before 1 a.m. Pacific Standard Time. The ICBM was equipped with a test reentry vehicle, the release said, which splashed down about 4,200 miles from its original launch point in the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, the command said. The command added the test verified the Minuteman III is accurate and reliable, and produced data that will help ensure the nation’s nuclear deterrent is safe, secure and effective.
Squadron commander Col. Chris Cruise said in the release that the test shows the nuclear triad — which also includes the ability to launch nuclear weapons from submarines and drop them from nuclear-capable bombers such as the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber — is the “cornerstone” of national security for the U.S. and its allies. “This scheduled test launch is demonstrative of how our nation’s ICBM fleet illustrates our readiness and reliability of the weapon system,” Cruise said. “It is also a great platform to show the skill sets and expertise of our strategic weapons maintenance personnel and of our missile crews who maintain an unwavering vigilance to defend the homeland.” The test launch was originally intended to take place Aug. 4. But on that day, the White House announced the delay amid a controversial visit to Taiwan by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. German Air Force takes flight for first Indo-Pacific deployment
The German Air Force has sent a fleet of aircraft around the world for its first-ever deployment to the Indo-Pacific region, a move meant to demonstrate its operational capability during two regional exercises and to show solidarity with its allies there.
Six Eurofighter jets — painted with the flags of Germany, Singapore, Australia, South Korea, and Japan — left Neuburg Air Base Monday afternoon followed by four A400M multirole aircraft, and three A330 multirole tanker transport aircraft. The goal is to reach Singapore within 24 hours, with a pilot change taking place in Abu Dhabi. Upon arrival in Singapore, the aircraft will be transferred to Darwin, Australia, ahead of the biennial Pitch Black exercise taking place Aug. 19 to Sept. 9.“We want to demonstrate that we can be in Asia within a day,” said Lt. Gen. Ingo Gerhartz, the air service’s chief of staff.
During the Pitch Black exercise, the German air force Eurofighters will practice air-to-air and air-to-ground attacks and defense while in larger formations with allied and partner fleets, according to the Luftwaffe. Once Pitch Black has concluded, the aircraft will also participate in the Royal Australian Navy’s Kakadu exercise, to be held Sept. 12-26. There, the Luftwaffe assets will help to protect naval vessels from the air, per the service.
