Empties Help Port of Long Beach Surpass Los Angeles in August

Mike Schuler September 15, 2022

The Port of Long Beach on Thursday reported having its second busiest August on record, with cargo volumes less than 1,000 TEUs off its monthly record and even surpassing its neighbor the Port of Los Angeles in terms of total throughput.

The repositioning of empty containers to Asia helped to offset a decline in imports as consumer spending slowed, the Port of Long Beach said.

Dockworkers and terminal operators at Long Beach moved a total of 806,940 TEUs of container cargo in August 2022, down just 764 TEUs, or 0.1%, from August 2021, which was its busiest August ever.

August’s cargo volumes also came in about 2.6% above July 2022’s volume, when the port handled a monthly record of 785,843 TEUs. In terms of total throughput, Long Beach even beat out its neighbor the Port of Los Angeles, the nation’s busiest container port, by about 940 TEUs last month—helped primarily by an increase in empty containers.

Imports through the Port of Long Beach were down 5.6% in August to 384,530 TEUs and exports increased 1.6% to 121,408 TEUs. Empty containers moved through port increased 7.2% to 301,001 TEUs.

“We’re making great strides in reducing the number of ships queuing to enter the San Pedro Bay ports complex and quickly moving imports and empty containers out of the terminals,” said Port of Long Beach Executive Director Mario Cordero. “We are collaborating with stakeholders to provide more information, more space and more flexibility across the supply chain.”

The Port of Long Beach has now broken monthly cargo records in six out of the last eight months. Year to date, Long Beach has moved 6,600,560 TEUs, up 4% from last year’s pace when the port set its all-time annual record.

Next door at the Port of Los Angeles, it has moved an estimated 7.2 million TEUs through the first eight months of 2022, trailing 2021’s all-time record pace by 1.6%.

“I commend our dockworkers for their continued hard work to keep goods moving through the Port,” said Long Beach Harbor Commission President Sharon L. Weissman. “Our reputation as a primary gateway for trans-Pacific trade relies on our ability to ensure the secure and speedy shipment of goods.”

Typhoon Muifa Brings Eastern China Ports to a Standstill

BEIJING, Sept 13 (Reuters) – Authorities in China’s eastern province of Zhejiang ordered ships to return to port, told schools to close and evacuated tourists from nearby islands, as one of this year’s strongest typhoons is set to make landfall on Wednesday.

Typhoon Muifa intensified on Tuesday as it barrelled towards the twin port cities of Ningbo and Zhoushan, which share the ranking of second-busiest port in China, in terms of cargo handled.

State media said China’s 12th cyclone of the year was expected to make landfall between the cities of Wenling and Zhoushan, bringing torrential rains on its sweep through eastern and southern coastal areas.

That includes the commercial hub of Shanghai, just north of Ningbo and Zhoushan, the official Xinhua news agency said.

Nearly 7,400 commercial vessels sought shelter in Zhejiang’s ports, including Zhoushan, Ningbo and Taizhou, while passenger ship routes across the province were suspended from noon, state media said.

'I'm a Latina Democrat - and if progressives think DeSantis appalls me, they're dead wrong': In a searing attack on 'smug liberals', top former party leader GLORIA ROMERO declares it's time for her own side to get real about America's border crisis

More than two million undocumented immigrants will be arrested trying to cross into the U.S. in 2022.

And Democrats don't bat an eye.

But fly 50 migrants to one of the wealthiest places in America, spotted with multi-million dollar mansions, surrounded by the mega-yachts of the rich and famous and Democrats lose their minds?

What a joke!

I am a Democrat and the former Majority Leader of the California State Senate. The first woman to ever hold that position. I am also a proud Latina.

I am telling you that if the Democratic party thinks that Latinos are outraged by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis sending migrants to Martha's Vineyard – they are dead wrong!

On Friday, the governor of Massachusetts dispatched the National Guard to whisk away these 50 migrants to a military base in Cape Cod that once housed hurricane disaster victims.

But what about the hundreds of migrants sleeping on the street of El Paso, Texas? Or the countless other migrants, sleeping outside in cities and towns across the U.S./Mexico border?

Overwhelming rural, poor, and largely Latino communities along the southern border are expected to absorb the costs of unprecedented migratory streams in a wide-open border, but Martha's Vineyard cannot?

Spare me!

This Democratic stronghold — where the Obamas now reside — couldn't stomach having 50 brown migrants in their midst without declaring an emergency and shipping them out of town within 24 hours.

Liberals want open borders – just not in their immaculate backyards.

While smug liberals and virtue-signaling progressives pretend that their immigration policies are 'compassionate,' Latinos know they are just cruel, naked politics.

Good for Governor DeSantis, and Governor Greg Abbott in Texas and Governor Doug Ducey in Arizona for sending this powerful message by making Democrats shoulder their 'fair share' of the burden of a broken immigration system.

After all, isn't it the Democrats who scream about the rich shouldering their 'fair share'?

Let the folks in Martha's Vineyard, Chicago, New York City and Washington D.C. get a taste of what it feels like to live in a New World border-less state.

Remember that the 2020 Democratic presidential primary contest was essentially a bidding war in which each candidate proposed progressively more permissive border policies.
