ACTIVE SHOOTER DRILL- heads up

YUBA COUNTY, Calif. - What would you do if you were caught in an active shooter situation?

Law enforcement in Yuba County wants to be sure they know how to answer that question.

“My scenario was to flee and get toward the main gate as fast as possible but I’m supposed to have a shotgun wound,” said Jesse Baxter

Baxter played a victim at the active shooter drill at the Toyota Amphitheater. It hits close to home – he actually lived through a shooting when he was in high school.

“I was in the third room down from where Houston came in and started shooting everybody,” Baxter said. “As soon as those doors opened I ran for the nearest doors I could get to. Unfortunately, I saw a couple of bodies, one of them was a friend of mine.”

Baxter survived the shooting at Lindhurst High School when a former student shot and killed 4 people in 1992.

“The Lindhurst incident back in the 90s was one of the first large-scale active shooter incidents that happened - so it can happen anywhere and our community is included in that,” said Yuba County Undersheriff Nick Morawcznski.

Today, Baxter was among dozens of volunteer victims.

“I was very, very willing to sign up; the more training they get the better, to save as many lives as possible.”

Police and firefighters from departments across the region joined in the drill.

“I do see this training as 100% needed. It’s the world we live in and the more prepared we can be to address this, the better we can serve our community,” Morawcznski said.

The undersheriff said while law enforcement showed plenty of strengths, there is always room for improvement and they’ll continue to grow.

The sheriff’s office had point-people staged throughout the grounds to observe and critique the response and find those areas of improvement.
