IRGC, Hezbollah operatives killed in bombing of Iraqi militia base — report

According to Arab media reports, drone struck base of group tied to Iran, after it recently received shipment of ballistic missiles from Islamic Republic

Several members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps and the Hezbollah terror group were killed in Iraq Friday, in a bombing that targeted a base belonging to a militia backed by Iran, according to an Arab report.

The Saudi-based al-Arabiya network said the base had recently received Iranian ballistic missiles, which were hidden inside trucks.

 

The bombing was reportedly carried out by a drone, but it was not clear who was behind it.

 

Earlier this month Iraq moved to bring under control Iran-backed militias in the country and place them under the command of Iraqi armed forces.

 

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in May told Iraqi leaders during a visit to Baghdad that if they don’t rein in the militias the US will resort to using force, Reuters reported.

The militias fall under the umbrella of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces, a collection of mostly Shiite militias that fought the Islamic State group and were incorporated into the Iraqi armed forces in 2016. Together they number more than 140,000 fighters, and while they fall under the authority of Iraq’s prime minister, the PMF’s top brass are politically aligned with Iran.

 

As tensions soared between the US and Iran in recent weeks, Iraq has found itself caught in the middle between two allies. Iraq hosts more than 5,000 US troops, and it is also home to the powerful Iranian-backed militias, some of whom want the US forces to leave.

The crisis gripping the Middle East stems from US President Donald Trump’s withdrawal of the United States a year ago from the nuclear deal between Iran and world powers and then imposing crippling new sanctions on Tehran.

 

Last month, the US ordered the evacuation of nonessential diplomatic staff from Iraq amid unspecified threats from Iran. Since then, there have been a string of attacks on US interests in Iraq, including military bases where American trainers are based and a rocket attack near the US Embassy in Baghdad. No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Dems decry Omar resolution defending Israel boycott: 'Dead on arrival'

 

High-profile Democrats are decrying a controversial resolution from Rep. Ilhan Omar affirming the right to boycott Israel, even as they rally behind her and three other first-term congresswomen attacked by President Trump.

Omar, D-Minn., proposed the resolution earlier this week in a bid to push back against U.S. laws banning the Israel boycotts. The text of the measure affirms the right of Americans to organize boycotts of foreign countries.

 

OMAR INTRODUCES RESOLUTION DEFENDING BOYCOTT OF ISRAEL, LIKENS IT TO BOYCOTTS OF NAZI GERMANY, SOVIET UNION

While the resolution doesn’t explicitly name Israel or the pro-Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, she told media outlets that the resolution concerns the Jewish state.

But Democrats, who rushed to Omar's defense this week after Trump’s Twitter attacks that critics called racist, have once again been put in an awkward spot by Omar's Israel criticism. Earlier this year, many Democrats condemned comments from Omar deemed anti-Semitic. Now, several members are making clear they're not on board with her BDS resolution.

 

California Democratic Rep. Brad Sherman, one of the more senior Jewish lawmakers in the House, told The Jerusalem Post that the resolution proposed by the fellow Democrat is not serious.

“I can’t imagine that any committee is going to mark up or take seriously any pro-BDS resolution,” Sherman said.

“Am I worried about the overall BDS movement worldwide as an economic matter? No. As an effort to delegitimize Israel, of course. The comments here today are a tiny part of that delegitimizing effort.”

Palm Beach sheriff opens internal affairs investigation into handling of Jeffrey Epstein

The Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office has opened an internal affairs investigation into whether it properly handled the case of multimillionaire Jeffrey Epstein, the part-time Palm Beach resident accused of sexually abusing dozens of underage girls.

Specifically, it will look at the decision more than a decade ago to allow Epstein to be free 12 hours a day on work release while serving a short sentence in the county stockade on a prostitution-related charge.

 

On Friday, Sheriff Ric Bradshaw — the same sheriff who oversaw the controversial work release arrangement — ordered the investigation be done.

“Sheriff Bradshaw takes these matters very seriously and wants to determine if any actions taken by the deputies assigned to monitor Epstein during his work release program violated any agency rules and regulations, during the time he was on PBSO work release program,” a news release said.

 

In the middle of the previous decade, Epstein was investigated for allegedly abusing young girls who were lured to his Palm Beach estate by recruiters. The girls, as young as 14, were told they would be giving a man a massage, then allegedly coerced into sex acts.

The U.S attorney’s office prepared a 53-page sex trafficking indictment against Epstein, but then, under pressure from Epstein’s team of lawyers, shelved the indictment and gave the case to the Palm Beach state attorney as part of a non-prosecution agreement.

After Epstein pleaded guilty to solicitation of a minor, a much lesser charge, he served a little more than a year in the county stockade rather than the decades-long sentence he could have faced under the federal indictment.

The question was about tweets that President Trump posted on Sunday, saying that the Democrat congresswomen should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came,” referring to Reps. Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib.

“I distance myself from this decidedly and stand in solidarity with the women who were attacked,” Merkel said. “U.S.’s strength lies exactly in the fact that people of very different nationalities contribute to the strength of the American people.”
