The Oregon Government Ethics Commission voted unanimously last week to open a formal investigation into the matter of former Portland State University President Rahmat Shoureshi.

The wealthy donor who flew Shoureshi to California was Jordan Schnitzer, the Portland real estate developer and manager. Schnitzer had invited Shoureshi to a weekend getaway at the Bohemian Grove resort, an enclave for wealthy men.

The commission will consider whether the flight violated the $50 maximum acceptable gift for Oregon public employees.

Shoureshi said he accepted the trip only because it was part of his job as university president to meet and mingle with deep-pocketed potential donors like Schnitzer. Schnitzer’s real estate company was not seeking any potential land development transaction with Portland State.

Beaches in Seattle, Washington, have been closed after 3 million gallons of sewage spilled into the Puget Sound.

Several beaches were closed by officials Friday after around 3 million gallons of untreated sewage spilled out of treatment plants. The system failures were believed to have been caused by power disruptions at the plants.

The spill reportedly lasted for around 27 minutes. It is unclear how long the closures may last.
