Ted Cruz: Trump's chances of winning reelection are 50/50

By Rachel Frazin - 07/20/19 03:45 PM EDT

Sen Red Cruz (R-Texas) said he thinks President Trump could "absolutely" be defeated in the 2020 election and predicted there could be "staggering" Democratic voter turnout.

He said in an interview with PBS's "Firing Line with Margaret Hoover" that aired Friday that he believes the presidential election will be a "coin flip" and placed Trump's reelection chances at "50/50."

Asked if Trump could be defeated, Cruz responded, "Absolutely. I personally handicap the 2020 election as a coin flip. I think it's about 50/50."

"I want to see the president reelected," he added. "And I think he certainly can get reelected. But I think we are going to see staggering Democratic turnout in 2020."

He attributed this possibly immense turnout to "anger" on the left.

"Anger is a powerful motivator," he said. "The far left is pissed. They are enraged by Donald Trump and it means they're going to show up and the big open question is: Does everybody else show up."

Cruz, an ally of Trump, narrowly won his 2018 Senate contest against challenger former Rep. Beto O'Rourke (D-Texas), who is now among the more than two dozen Democrats running for president in 2020.

Overall voter turnout in 2018 reportedly reached the highest level for a midterm election since 1966.

Immigrants on edge over prospect of ICE raids

By Brett Samuels - 07/20/19 12:13 PM EDT

Immigrant communities across the country are on edge after mass deportation operations promised by President Trump failed to materialize in recent days.

Trump has claimed the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids were “very successful” and took place out of the public eye. But immigration advocates said they’ve seen no evidence of a widespread sweep, and experts question whether the president may have hindered the efforts by speaking publicly about them.

Advocacy organizations are urging those who may be targeted by ICE to remain vigilant, cautioning that the larger raids could take place in the coming days, weeks or months.

“I think this threat is still out there, and there’s no trust in this administration,” said Sergio Gonzales, deputy director of the Immigration Hub. “People are still very much living as if this could happen at any moment.”

Immigration advocacy groups and local officials braced for raids targeting at least 10 major cities and thousands of individuals with deportation orders after Trump said they would begin last Sunday.

In the days since, ICE carried out enforcement activity in New York City, Oregon, Denver and elsewhere. Gonzales said he’d heard of instances of individuals and family members being picked up by ICE but that it was unclear whether they were part of regular ongoing enforcement efforts.

But the sweeping operation that many expected never arrived.

John Sandweg, who served as acting ICE director in the Obama administration, said he believes there was an unreasonable expectation for the scope of the operation. He noted the agency lacks the resources to round up the scores of immigrants Trump had indicated would be targeted in one coordinated swoop.

Kyrsten Sinema, Eight Other Senators Sign Letter to Speed up Removal of Certain Migrants

By The Daily Caller News Foundation

July 20, 2019 Updated: July 20, 2019

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema is aiming to implement a program at the U.S.-Mexico border that would speed up the removal of migrants without valid asylum claims.

The Arizona Democrat joined eight other senators in signing a letter Wednesday to acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan, The Arizona Republic reported.

The letter detailed how the pilot program, which is called “Operation Safe Return,” would allow for some migrants to be deported within 15 days.

“This pilot program would apply to families who aren’t claiming ‘credible fear,’ which of course is the first threshold in seeking asylum,” Sinema told The Arizona Republic. “If someone says, ‘I left my country because I can’t make a living,’ [or] ‘It’s hard to take care of my family’—that’s what we call an economic migrant.”

Border Patrol would be given one to three days for “detailed, fair and accurate interviews” with migrant families. If the families are fearful of returning to their home countries, they would be deported, the newspaper reported.

If a family is fearful, the next step would be for asylum officers to conduct a credible-fear interview. The officers would have nine days after the family is caught to do so. After that, the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice would have six days to determine a ruling on the case, according to the report.

“Within approximately 15 days after being encountered, the Department of Homeland Security should remove family units whose negative credible fear determinations are affirmed by the immigration judge,” the letter says.

Republican Sens. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Rob Portman of Ohio, James Lankford of Oklahoma, John Barrasso and Michael Enzi of Wyoming, and John Cornyn of Texas signed the letter. Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Doug Jones of Alabama signed the letter as well.

First Step Act: Thousands of Inmates Released

By Miguel Moreno, The Epoch Times

July 20, 2019 Updated: July 20, 2019

The Department of Justice announced that over three thousand inmates will be released on July 19.

“And starting today at prisons around the country nearly thirty-one hundred inmates are being released from BP (Bureau of Prisons) custody due to the increase in good time credits applied to reduce their sentences under the first step act,” said Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen at a press conference.

The First Step Act, a bipartisan push for prison reform, was passed last year with strong support from President Trump and Congress.

As a part of the law, sentences are to be recalculated retroactively after accounting for good behavior credit, credit that would only allow sentences to be reduced by 47 days per year before the bill.

Now they may be reduced by 54 days per year.

Wide Range of Inmates Released

“In terms of the range of people who have been released, the largest number are drug offenders, the second group are weapons and explosives and the third are sex offenders,” said Associate Deputy Attorney General Antoinette “Toni” Bacon. “But there’s a very wide range of people who are being released.”

BlackRock CEO: Companies Are Moving Supply Chains Out of China Now

7/19/2019

Trump may not have many fans in the c-suites of corporate America but they are certainly helping his administration’s push back against China’s predatory mercantilism.

Larry Fink, chairman and CEO of BlackRock, said in an interview Friday that companies are moving supply chains out of China now instead of waiting to see how the trade war plays out.

“We’re hearing from CEOs that more and more supply chains are moving out of China right now, ” Fink said on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” program. “People are not waiting, companies are not waiting to see what the outcome is.”

That’s a big reversal of the pattern that prevailed for close to two decades, in which U.S. companies increasingly implanted their supply chains inside China, even as labor costs in the Asian country rose well above its developing economy neighbors.

One reason China’s dominance in global manufacturing lasted longer than an examination of labor costs would suggest was an asymmetry in trade policy. China imposes heavy tariffs on imported goods, making access to China’s market difficult for goods made abroad. The U.S. has very low tariffs on most goods, only recently imposing serious tariffs on goods made in China.

Nolte: America Went to the Moon and then Went Shopping

7/20/2019

The most dangerous part of going to the moon is the blast of energy required to break away from the Earth’s gravitational pull. Fifty years ago, that meant NASA would need a rocket 100 times more powerful than the Mercury boosters that put the first American into orbit.

The Saturn V was designed by a former Nazi, Wernher von Braun; it was taller than the length of a football field, weighed 6.5 million pounds, and carried almost a million gallons of fuel.

Sitting above all that fuel, concealed within Saturn V, was the Apollo Spacecraft that would take us to the moon.

Most important, there were three men strapped to the top of that Saturn V; and on July 16, 1969, those three men were Commander Neil Armstrong (38), Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin (39), and Command Module Pilot Michael Collins (38). Their mission was to fulfill the pledge of John F. Kennedy, the slain president who had audaciously announced eight years earlier — before we had even launched a man into orbit — that before the end of the decade, America would land a man on the moon and safely bring him home.

The Saturn V is a three-stage launch vehicle. With 7.5 million pounds of thrust that require a half-million gallons of fuel, the first stage launches the payload 42 miles into the air in just under three minutes. It is here that the first separation occurs. Explosive bolts fire, and those first stage rockets and their fuel tanks are released to fall safely into the Atlantic Ocean.

At three minutes and 12 seconds into the mission, what’s called the interstage skirt is ditched and the second stage rockets fire up for about six minutes. This burn gobbles up another 340,000 gallons of fuel and propels the craft another 100 or so miles.

At about nine minutes into the mission, the second stage rockets are cut loose to reveal a single third stage engine (the J-2) that will burn for a little over two minutes. When it shuts off, the Apollo spacecraft is cruising at nearly 17,500 miles per hour 119 miles above the Earth.

After one loop around the Earth, the J-2 fires again to hurl the astronauts towards the moon, which is 238,000 miles away.

And it is here that things get crazy.

Three hours and 24 minutes into the mission, it is time to separate again. Tucked away within the third stage rocket, within what remains of the Saturn V launch vehicle, are three vessels: the Lunar Module (LM or “lem”), codenamed “Eagle”; the Command Module, (the CM; the cone-shaped vehicle the astronauts return home in — the only part of this entire machine that is not eventually abandoned) codenamed “Columbia,” and the Service Module (SM), which is the propulsion and support system.

Ocasio-Cortez Calls for Green New Deal to Combat NYC Subway Flooding

7/20/2019

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) took to Twitter Friday afternoon, renewing calls for the implementation of the Green New Deal amid a national heatwave and severe flooding in New York City.

The lawmaker posted a video, showing severe flooding at the Court Square subway station in New York City.

“This is what the climate crisis is doing, and will do, to American infrastructure,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted.

“This is why we need a #GreenNewDeal that invests in a solution on the scale of the problem – and can help our nation transition, adjust, and prevent further damage in the climate crisis,” she continued:

The freshman lawmaker’s Green New Deal rolled out with a rocky start. While it asserted that “human activity is the dominant cause of observed climate change over the past century” and added that “a changing climate is causing sea levels to rise and an increase in wildfires, severe storms, droughts, and other extreme weather events that threaten human life,” it also teased giving economic stability to people “unwilling” to work.

No they don't get paid for life with only one term..Nice work if you can get it. But members of Congress can't.

A report on "Retirement Benefits for Members of Congress," prepared in November by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service, outlines how pension benefits are calculated.

The key provision: no member of Congress is eligible for any pension unless he or she has served in Congress for at least five years. (Senators serve six-year terms; House members must seek reelection every two years.)

To collect, a congressman or senator must be age 62, or be at least age 50 with 20 years of service, or be any age with 25 years of service.

Polls: Joe Biden Dominates 2020 Field in the South

7/20/2019

Former Vice President Joe Biden dominates the 2020 field throughout the South, according to a series of new polls out of the region.

Biden, who has seen his lead shrink nationally amid controversy over his praise of segregationists and long-held opposition to busing, appears to have maintained his support in the South as evidenced by a number of new polls conducted by NBC News and SurveyMonkey.

In Mississippi, the former vice president takes nearly a majority of the vote with 47 percent when polled against the rest of the field. Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT), who took second place in the poll, only received 21 percent. Trailing behind were Sens. Kamala Harris (D-CA) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) with 8 percent and 7 percent, respectively. Surprisingly, the poll found Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO), one of the lesser-known but more moderate candidates, in fourth place — tied with Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg — at 3 percent. Apart from Marianne Williamson, all of the others polled at 1 percent or lower.

Biden likewise tops his fellow White House hopefuls by double digits in Alabama. Polling from the state shows the former vice president pulling in 36 percent support, more than 21 points ahead of his nearest competitor. Far behind was Sanders, who at 15 percent barely edged out Harris — 13 percent — for second place. Warren landed in fourth with 9 percent. The 19 other candidates fell below the 7 percent garnered by the poll’s “no answer” category

The frontrunner holds smaller but still significant leads in Georgia and Tennessee. In the latter, Biden took 33 percent compared to 18 percent for the runner up, Warren. Coming in third, albeit within the margin of error, was Sanders at 13 percent, followed by Harris with 12 percent. Buttigieg rounded out fifth place with 6 percent among voters in the Volunteer State. Bennet, once again, surprised by taking 2 percent, beating out more known and better-funded candidates like Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX).

Meanwhile, in Georgia, Biden led the field with 31 percent support among respondents. Harris polled second at 15 percent, with Warren (13 percent) and Sanders (12 percent) close on her heels. Buttigieg was far behind in fifth with 5 percent, just barely surpassing former entrepreneur Andrew Yang, who polled at 4 percent.

Giuliani: ‘We Could Do Serious Damage to All of Iran’s Nuclear Facilities

7/20/2019

Friday on Fox News Channel’s “Hannity,” former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani offered his thoughts on how to deal with Iran in the wake of its saber-rattling in the Persian Gulf.

Earlier in the day, Iran reportedly seized two U.K. flagged vessels, and according to Giuliani, the United States could respond in a way to make it very difficult for the regime to survive.

“If we could make it impossible for them to develop nuclear weapons in the next five to 10 years, I’m convinced there’ll be regime change there,” Giuliani said. “I mean, it could happen this year or next year. The other thing that’s underestimated – and I saw significant video evidence of this, and I have a couple of interviews I want to show you. The protests in Iran are very significant. I saw the video evidence of thousands of people in the street. And it’s gone beyond just political protests. Taxi drivers, all the teachers in Iran, went on strike, and they are carrying posters “Down with the ayatollah.” That’s in risk of their lives. ‘Down with Rouhani.’ And they’re chanting support for Madam Rajavi and the people in the coalition government. And this is fact. You can see it.

“You also see signs. I saw several signs of men selling their kidneys for $500 in order to feed their families,” he continued. “So they’re in significantly difficult trouble. So if we – if we had to hit them back – and I agree, that should be the last resort. We could do serious damage to all of their nuclear facilities. We take some of them out. We set the others back five or 10 years. We also should immediately take out their naval capacity, so they stop screwing around with the Strait of Hormuz. The U.K. should help us with that, or they should resign from NATO.”

Islamic Revolutionary Guards Say Capture of UK Tanker Is Payback for Detention of Iran Tanker

7/20/2019

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) – A powerful council in Iran said Saturday the country’s seizure of a British oil tanker in the strategic Strait of Hormuz was in response to Britain’s role in impounding an Iranian supertanker two weeks earlier.

Spokesman of Iran’s Guardian Council, Abbas Ali Kadkhodaei, was quoted in the semi-official Fars news agency saying “the rule of reciprocal action is well-known in international law” and that Iran’s moves to “confront the illegitimate economic war and seizure of oil tankers is an instance of this rule and is based on international rights.”

The council rarely comments on state matters, but when it does it is seen as a reflection of the supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s views. That’s because the council works closely with Khamenei, who has final say on all state matters.

The free flow of traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is of international importance because one-fifth of all global crude exports passes through the waterway from Mideast exporters to countries around the world.

The British-flagged Stena Impero was seized by Iran on Friday evening with a crew of 23 crew aboard. None are British nationals. Maritime trackers show it was headed to a port in Saudi Arabia.

Two weeks earlier, Britain’s Royal Marines took part in the seizure of an Iranian oil tanker carrying more than 2 million barrels of Iranian crude by Gibraltar, a British overseas territory off the southern coast of Spain. Officials there initially said the July 4 seizure happened on orders from the U.S

Britain has said it would release the vessel if Iran could prove it was not breaching European Union sanctions on oil shipments to Syria. However, on Friday, a court in Gibraltar extended by 30 days the detention of the Panama-flagged Grace.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif characterized the seizure of Iran’s tanker as “piracy.” In comments on Twitter, he wrote that the U.K. must cease being an accessory to the “economic terrorism” of the U.S. – a reference to sweeping American sanctions on Iran.

Iran’s subsequent seizure of the British tanker was seen as a significant escalation. Germany and France have both condemned the move, with Berlin saying it undermines all efforts to find a way out of the current crisis.

In London, Tom Tugendhat, the chairman of Britain’s House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, said military action to free the British tanker would be “extremely unwise,” especially because the vessel was apparently taken to a well-protected port.

Current tensions have been escalating since President Donald Trump withdrew the U.S. from Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers and imposed economic sanctions on Iran, including its oil exports

San Francisco's Hidden Homeless

by Tyler Durden

Sat, 07/20/2019 - 16:50

We came across a news story in the Los Angeles Times about San Francisco's 2019 Point-In-Time count of its homeless population that caught our attention because it indicated that the total number of homeless counted in San Francisco in January 2019 wasn't 8,011 as previously reported, but 9,784 after more accurately accounting for the "hidden homeless". Here's an excerpt:

Over the last several months, cities and counties across California have been releasing homeless counts. The results have been grim.

San Francisco was no exception. In May, the city released data that showed homelessness had jumped 17%. That was bad enough. Last week, a more complete accounting, known as a point-in-time count, showed the problem was even worse.

The count revealed that homelessness in a city that’s become a caricature of wealth inequality in the U.S. had actually increased by about 30% from 2017, when the last count took place.

The new numbers use a broader definition of what’s considered to be homeless that goes beyond what’s mandated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. They include homeless people in jails, hospitals and residential treatment facilities.

Partly what stands out in this story is its bad reporting, because the figure behind the 17% increase in San Francisco's homeless count that was reported in May 2019 and the figure behind the 30% increase reported last week were both the result of the city's 2019 Point-In-Time Count of its homeless population. The difference between the two figures is who they include in their totals, where the claim that the later reported figure was the result of "a more complete accounting, known as a point-in-time count" is highly misleading.

Buzz Aldrin predicts Artemis program will leave decades-long legacy like Apollo

Former astronaut Buzz Aldrin -- the second man to walk on the moon -- predicted that President Trump's "Artemis" program would bring decades of progress like the United States saw with the Apollo program that launched him into space.

"The five decades of Apollo['s legacy] goes all the way from Apollo 1 through the successful landing, on up through Apollo 17 ... and now we're going to begin the decades of Artemis," he said in a joint interview with Vice President Mike Pence.

The interview, which aired on Saturday's "America's News HQ," came as the nation celebrated the 50th anniversary of Aldrin and Neil Armstrong making the first lunar landing on the Apollo 11 mission.

After Armstrong and Aldrin set foot on the Moon on July 20, 1969, just 10 more NASA astronauts would follow in their footsteps by walking on the lunar surface. The most recent human to set foot on the Moon was Apollo 17 astronaut Eugene Cernan on Dec. 14, 1972.

Pence announced Saturday that the Orion space capsule was ready to take astronauts to the moon as part of the Artemis program. “The Orion crew capsule for the Artemis mission is complete and ready to begin preparations for its historic first mission,” he said.

ASTRONAUT STAN LOVE SAYS US WILL 'ABSOLUTELY' MEET TRUMP'S GOAL OF REACHING MOON BY 2024

During his interview with Aldrin, Pence expressed confidence that Trump would follow through with the program despite his stated frustration with NASA's decision to use the moon as a jumping-off point to get to Mars. The president instead wanted the agency to focus on just going to Mars.

"Yesterday in the Oval Office, President Trump did not seem entirely convinced that we should go to the moon first and not just go directly to Mars," Fox News' Kristin Fisher told him. "Are you sure that President Trump is on board with this plan?"

Pence laughed off the question, telling Fisher "you bet, 100 percent." He indicated that while Trump was "anxious" to get Americans on Mars, his administration understood the importance of traveling to the moon in order to develop the technologies needed for a longer trip to the red planet.

NASA’s team of multidisciplinary members are interested in addressing microbial contamination, an operational concern anticipated with crew habitat and associated life support systems. Long duration missions provide significant challenges, particularly to the crew environment. Of specific concerns are the Water Processing Assembly (WPA), where recycled water can become susceptible to microorganism contamination, and biofouling and biocorrosion of surfaces and environmental subsystems. Workshop participants are invited to provide guidance to mitigate contamination issues related to the WPA, and research ideas by describing studies of biofilm formations that make use of the environment aboard the International Space Station.

Ideas are also welcome from researchers who are not able to attend the workshop in person through a Request for Information (RFI) on Joint Biofilms Workshop. RFI and submission instructions can be found at com/NASA-RFI-NNH19ZTT002L.

Not likely ... the dna code is delivered from the soul to the body not the other way around. The soul/spirit creates the blueprint of the body and doesn't need it to exist in eternity. Ergo angels appearing in the flesh in the 3D, even eating with humans and vanishing again into their otherworldly supernatural state/first estate/dimensional state upwards of 3D.
