Let's work on one thing at a time: Text.
The text needs to be fully readable at thumbnail size -- because many people will only see the meme in their Twitter feed on a smartphone, and won't even click it unless something about the image strongly grabs their attention.
That means selecting a strong bold font and making the font quite large.
Some of my favorite strong fonts include:
Impact
Torque Sense
Turnpike
ChunkFive
Any sans-serif font BOLDED.
Generally speaking, Times Roman Serif family fonts don't work as well on memes.
Think about
Size
Color
Contrast
Think readability
Also we all need to keep thinking about expressing the meaning using 7 words of text or less, with the image carrying the bulk of the information. I acknowledge this fault in muhself.
