personally love fedora. but lotsa folks like mint, but have never tried.

 

as far as proc/mem, anything newer than 686 with 2 gig should be fine. more down to the graphics card how snazzy it is.

 

oldest here is a t61p, circa 2007,

it runs f30 fine as long as i blow the dust out every 2 years or so,

 

for the browser, go to dissenter.com and get their latest reworked chrome, dissenter-browser. they pulled out most of the call-home stuff, so it should be fairly secure, certainly moreso that plain chrome.

core duo are definitely 64 bit, at least that's what mine has. you have to go waayy back to be limited to 32 bit. windows may not have supported, linux certainly does.

 

how old is the laptop? core duo came out mid 2000's
