Forget Mueller, Congress Needs to Interview the Real Author of the ‘Weissmann Report

DECLASSIFIED - The Epoch Times

Robert Mueller’s confused, garbled testimony made it abundantly clear that he was nothing more than a figurehead for the Special Counsel investigation that he ostensibly led for 22 painstaking months. The real mastermind behind this travesty of an investigation was Mueller’s second-in-command, Andrew Weissmann, and it’s time that he be held to account.

Mass Shooting at Garlic Festival in California Leaves 4 Dead, Including Suspected Shooter

Updated: July 29, 2019

GILROY, Calif.—Three people were killed and at least 15 others injured Sunday after a shooting that sent panicked people running at an annual food festival in Northern California. Also dead is the shooter, who used a rifle and gained entry to the packed festival by cutting through a fence to avoid the tight security, including metal detectors, police said.

Some witnesses reported a second suspect, Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee said, but it was unclear whether that person opened fire. Police confronted the shooter within a minute of shots being fired.

“It’s just incredibly sad and disheartening that at an event that does so much good the community had to suffer from a tragedy like this,” said Smithee.

Witnesses reported confusion and panic as shots rang out at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in the city of 50,000 located about 80 miles (176 kilometers) southeast of San Francisco, near San Jose.

The shooting occurred during the three-day celebration featuring food, cooking competitions and music that attracts more than 100,000 people. Sunday was the final day of this year’s event.

Video first posted on social media sites about 5:30 p.m. showed people running for safety, as shots rang out.

Footage uploaded to social media appeared to show festival attendees scattering in confusion as loud popping sounds could be heard in the background.

“What’s going on?” a woman can be heard asking on one video. “Who’d shoot up a garlic festival?”

President Donald Trump tweeted shortly following news of the shooting, saying, “Law Enforcement is at the scene of shootings in Gilroy, California. Reports are that shooter has not yet been apprehended. Be careful and safe!”

Stanford Medical Center has two patients being treated from the shooting at the festival, spokeswoman Julie Greicius said. She had no details on their injuries or conditions. Santa Clara Valley Medical Center received five victims, spokeswoman Joy Alexiou said. She also had no information on their conditions.

Evenny Reyes of Gilroy, 13, told the Mercury News that she spent the day at the festival with her friends and relatives.

Honduras, El Salvador Expected to Follow After Guatemala, Mexico Make Immigration Deals With Trump

Updated: July 28, 2019

Shortly after overseeing the signing of a “safe third country” asylum agreement with Guatemala at the Oval Office on July 26, President Donald Trump told reporters that he expects to soon sign similar deals with Honduras and El Salvador.

Prior to the pact with Guatemala, Trump had already secured help from Mexico to tackle the migration crisis. In both cases, the president used the threat of tariffs to compel the two nations to cooperate, suggesting that the option of a tariff threat is on the table in dealing with Honduras and El Salvador as well.

“We have other great countries that are going to be signing up also,” Trump said.

Asked later if he expected to reach similar agreements with Honduras and El Salvador, Trump replied, “I do indeed.”

Migrants from Guatemala, Mexico, El Salvador, and Honduras account for 74 percent of the cases in U.S. immigration courts. In addition to their nationals who continue to pour into the United States, these countries serve as the major transit corridor for migrants from more than 200 other nations traveling en route to the United States.

As a result, cooperation from the four nations is crucial to stemming the flow of migrants to the U.S. southern border, especially at a time when Democrats in Congress continue to refuse to work with the Trump administration on legislation to patch up the loopholes in the U.S. immigration system. The president said the deals with Honduras and El Salvador may come “pretty soon,” suggesting that his international diplomacy may end up addressing a crisis largely perceived as a domestic issue under the purview of Congress.

The agreement with Guatemala requires migrants from Honduras and El Salvador to file their asylum claims and await the decisions in their cases in Guatemala; those who fail to do so will be sent back to Mexico once they are apprehended on the U.S.-Mexico border. While details of the implementation are unclear, the deal can technically prevent the vast majority of migrants from Honduras and El Salvador from traveling to and remaining in the United States. Migrants from El Salvador and Honduras constitute more than a third of the total claims in U.S. immigration courts.

Trump called the deal with Guatemala “historic” and said it would be “terrific” for both countries. The president noted that the deal will pave the way for investment in Guatemala and the expansion of the farm workers visa program.

“Today, we’re sending a clear message to human smugglers and traffickers that your day is over. And we’re investing in the future of Guatemala, the safety of migrants, and their families,” Trump said. “We’ll protect the rights of those with legitimate claims, and we’ll end the widespread abuse of the system and the crippling crisis on our border.”

Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan and Guatemalan Interior Minister Enrique Degenhart signed the agreement in the Oval Office as Trump looked on.

Guatemala briefly walked away from the deal earlier this month, and Trump responded with a threat of levying tariffs, raising fees on remittance payments, or imposing a travel ban. With any one of the measures posing the threat of crippling its economy, Guatemala signed the deal days later.

While it’s too soon to tell what effect the deal with Guatemala will have, the assistance that Mexico is providing is already having a substantial impact on the flow of migrants. According to McAleenan, apprehensions on the southwest border dropped by 28 percent in June and 22 percent in July, following Mexico’s commitment to use its National Guard to intercept and deter migrants traversing its territory.

Trump Aides Defend His Comments on Baltimore, ‘Zero to Do With Race

Updated: July 28, 2019

Aides and allies of President Donald Trump spoke out on July 28 to defend his criticisms of Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) and the handling of his Maryland congressional district, which the president earlier described as a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess.”

At the same time, Trump amplified his disapproval of Cummings and doubled down on his comments that he did a “very poor job” in Baltimore, as he turned his criticisms toward House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the handling of her own district in San Francisco.

Acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney said in an interview on “Fox News Sunday” that Trump’s description of Cummings’s district contained no racial connotations. The president’s description prompted criticism from some members of the Democratic Party, who claimed it was a racist attack.

“I think it has absolutely zero to do with race,” Mulvaney told the network. He said the president “was right” to raise the issue.

“I was in Congress for six years,” Mulvaney said. “If I had poverty in my district like they have in Baltimore, if I had crime in my district like they have in Chicago, if I had homelessness in my district like they have in San Francisco, and I spent all of my time in Washington, D.C., chasing down this Mueller investigation, this bizarre impeachment crusade—I’d get fired.”

Mulvaney said Trump’s tweets were a response to Cummings’s criticism of the conditions at the border, which he said were “not accurate.” Trump himself also called Cummings a racist.

“Mr. Cummings has not been to the border in recent memory, certainly not during this administration,” Mulvaney said.

A tour of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Adelanto, California, revealed a very different picture than the one painted by critics of a miserable and poorly run facility after Fox News was given rare access to tour the area with cameras.

They observed that detainees had access to “24-hour health care, dental care, mental health care, unlimited phone calls, legal advice, a law library, physical-contact visitations, outdoor recreation, and religious services seven days a week.”

Trump’s personal attorney, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, questioned why Cummings hadn’t been focusing on the conditions of his own district, which he has represented since 1996.

“How long has Cummings represented this district and done nothing about it?” Giuliani said on Twitter. “It reminds me of the Dems who represented Harlem for years and became wealthy while Harlem declined? It took a Republican mayor to turn it around.”

Republican strategist Kimberly Klacik also pointed out the apparent hypocrisy of Cummings’s comments, calling his purported concern for the border situation “laughable,” in an interview with Fox News on July 27. She also noted that “a lot of people said he hasn’t even been [to his own district] in a while.”

Cummings last week claimed that his constituents are scared of the president. Klacik told the network that she visited the district to ask people if that’s true.

“And as I go in and I start talking to people, I realized just what the living conditions are, for not just for the residents, but even the children there and what they’ve been playing around,” Klacik said. “There’s abandoned rowhomes filled with trash, homeless addicts, empty needles that they have used, and it’s really right next door. So it’s attracting rodents, cockroaches, you name it.”

“I didn’t find anyone that said they were afraid of Trump,” Klacik said. “But I did find out that there are many people that are actually on board with Trump’s immigration policies.”

In a string of Twitter posts on July 28, Trump said Cummings is all talk and no action, as he made a broader attack against the Democratic Party for often using race to attack opponents.

Antifa Attacked Journalist Andy Ngo. Now He's Opening Up About What He's Learned About The Group.

Last month, conservative journalist Andy Ngo was attacked while covering an Antifa protest in Portland, Oregon. He suffered multiple blows to the head, had milkshakes filled with quick drying cement thrown at him and his GoPro camera stolen. Throughout the entire ordeal, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler (D) told police to stand down.

To make matters even worse, Ngo, who is openly gay, was attacked during pride month. And no LBGT organization stood up to condemn Antifa and offer support to Ngo.

Ngo appeared on "The Ingraham Angle" to discuss the attack, offer insight into the group and where he plans to go moving forward.

"It took several hits to my head to realize, 'Oh, I'm getting beaten up right now.' I've never been in a fight. I've never been arrested. I don't drink or do drugs so it was just...I've never encountered anything near it so it was just, I think by the third punch, I was hoping and wishing it'd stop, but it continued," Ngo recalled.

"Why do they react to you the way they react to you?" Ingraham asked.

"It's because my writings are not just critical of them. It has an audience and a reach," Ngo replied. "I've written for some mainstream publications, like National Review and The Wall Street Journal, and I'm broadcasting to a large audience. This other side, Antifa, is frequently hidden, whitewashed in liberal press."

"A lot of attention is paid to these incidents of street hooliganism, which is one aspect of their tactics, but, more important, I think is the ideology," he explained. "They're working towards a political revolution. They're made up of anarchists and communists. These acts of violence and vandalism, they're not meant to only target citizens, they're meant to polarize societies. And it's also meant to delegitimize institutions that uphold the laws, so they have a lot of hate for law enforcement, for border enforcement, you see reflected in their chants as well as where they target their acts of violence when it's not just directed at citizens."

According to Ngo, most Antifa thugs would identify with Marx although he's "still trying to understand and comprehend how coherent their ideology is."

Because Antifa came to life after the 2016 election of President Donald Trump, there hasn't been enough time for academia to study the group. We don't know how they're organized or who writes their literature or what their books of literature are.

As of now, no arrests have been made in Ngo's case, but he's thankful at least part of the attack was caught on camera.

Ngo is currently raising funds for his legal representation. The goal is $100,000.

Sales Of Venezuelan Gold Spike Around World, Could Be "Fundamental" To Maduro's Survival

7/29/2019

Authored by Luke Taylor via The Epoch Times,

As oil revenue for Venezuela continues to stagnate, the Maduro regime is more reliant than ever on illegal gold exploited from lawless jungles in the south of the country, according to a recent report and leading experts on the topic.

The coveted mineral is being exported through an elaborate global network from the crisis-stricken nation to Europe, the Middle East, and the United States, where its origin is unidentifiable, an investigative project created by five media outlets across five countries has revealed.

Beijing Warns More Unrest In Hong Kong "Won't Be Tolerated

7/29/2019

In what appears to be a first since Hong Kong was handed back to China by the UK in 1997, the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, a mainland authority that oversees the two Chinese territories, held a press conference on Monday where they reiterated that the violent protests that continued through Sunday wouldn't be tolerated by Beijing's government, BBG reports.

The HKMAO, which answers directly to China's cabinet, reaffirmed its support for the city's government and police during what was a rare press briefing on Monday. After the briefing, the heads of the authority brusquely left the room, ignoring questions shouted by journalists.

Office spokesman Yang Guang said Beijing remained committed to "one country, two systems," the separation of powers that has led to joint governance of Hong Kong since 1997. Yang added that the violence and unrest that have rocked Hong Kong over the past eight weeks "has gone far beyond the scope of peaceful march and demonstration, undermined Hong Kong's prosperity and stability, and touched on the bottom line of the principle of 'one country, two systems'," Yang said.

"No civilized society under the rule of law would ever allow acts of violence to take place."

According to the SCMP, Yang said the CPC has three 'hopes' for Hong Kong: That segments of the population start opposing violence, that various sectors firmly protect the rule of law, and that society can "get out of political conflict as soon as possible."

What started as a protest movement to kill the hated Hong Kong extradition bill, which would have given the city-state's government the power to extradite anybody to the mainland to face punishment for alleged crimes. Opponents saw the bill, which was being fast-tracked by the authority, would have allowed Beijing to arrest dissidents traveling through Hong Kong. Earlier this month, City Executive Carrie Lam tabled the withdrawal bill, but refused to take the additional step that would have taken it off the legislative agenda. With the possibility that Lam could back track as soon as protests calmed down, more Hong Kongers took to the streets to demand that Lam, who was selected by Beijing to lead Hong Kong's government, resign, and that she take the additional steps to kill the legislation for the current cycle.

But the HKMAO reiterated that the protests have devolved into "evil and criminal acts" committed by "radical elements."

"We call on the general public of Hong Kong to be aware of the grave nature of the current situation and to jointly condemn the evil and criminal acts committed by the radical elements and prevent them from causing trouble to Hong Kong," Yang said.

Meanwhile, the HKMAO representatives acknowledged that Hong Kong must do a better job to "solve the grievances" of the young, and "push for economic development and solve grievances of youngsters on quality of life and career prospects."

Hong Kong markets responded well to the press conference, with stocks paring declines after the briefing. MSCI was off 1.7% in recent trade, after falling as much as 2.2% earlier.

"This morning there was concern among investors that the central government could express a tougher stance," said Steven Leung, executive director at Uob Kay Hian. But now that the HKMAO has struck a more moderate tone that could be described as "tough but firm," some of those worries have dissipated.

Still, the threat that Beijing could mobilize the garrison of People's Liberation Army troops stationed in Hong Kong continued to hang over markets.

The UN Just Rebuked Two Close US Allies For Shocking Child Death Tolls

7/29/2019

As US diplomatic officials around the globe are no doubt lecturing 'official enemies' over human rights, and enforcing crippling sanctions from Caracas to Damascus to Tehran to Moscow, they might pause for a moment and look closer to home, as days ago the United Nations slammed key American allies Saudi Arabia and Israel for killing an appalling high number of children.

Not unrelated, as we've noted before, the two countries have also grown closer in their relationship over the past years in common cause against Iran and related to Syria regime change policy.

First the Saudis, which found themselves for the first time under unprecedented international scrutiny following the December 2018 Jamal Khashoggi killing in Istanbul. Reuters reported Friday:

A Saudi Arabia-led military coalition fighting in Yemen killed or injured 729 children during 2018, accounting for nearly half the total child casualties, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a report to the Security Council on Friday that blacklisted the coalition for a third year.

Doctor Says Russian Opposition Leader May Have Been Poisoned

7/29/2019

Moscow's most prominent opposition figure, Alexei Navalny, has been moved from jail to a local hospital in the Russian capital after officials said the rogue politician may have been poisoned.

According to BBC, officials said Navalny - who has been detained for the second day on Monday - was in "satisfactory" condition, and that though he may have had an allergic reaction, Navalny's doctors said they demanded "fundamentals" like the prospect of using "disproportionate" things like making. More than 1,400 people were detained while protesting Navalny's detention.

Navalny had been sentenced to 30 days for provoking an unsanctioned protest with other lawmakers.

Representative John Ratcliffe Responds to ODNI Nomination

Posted on July 29, 2019 by sundance

Representative John Ratcliffe tweets a statement after President Trump announces his nomination for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI):

There has been some speculation that ODNI Dan Coats needed to step aside because he was refusing to comply with the declassification process. It’s worth waiting to see if that assumption is accurate, or if the speculation is unfounded. However, there is validity to the speculation based on the structure of how executive declassification is done.

Declassification of intelligence is a process, and each person -within the executive branch- inside the intelligence agency must agree to the process. Technically President Trump can declassify anything. However, it is also true that technically POTUS doesn’t actually declassify anything.

Any intelligence action President Trump discusses publicly is automatically declassified. The President cannot break any law that covers declassification and/or secrecy; when he or she talks about anything.

However, when it comes to documents the process is different. If the president were to hand documents to the media, with instructions that those documents were heretofore declassified, they are automatically declassified (same as public speech standard), but that is never done [it’s theoretical].

Instead, the Office of the President asks for a document to enter into a declassification review process. This is the declassification process authority President Trump gave to AG Bill Barr on May 23rd, 2019 by executive order.

WHITE HOUSE: “Today, at the request and recommendation of the Attorney General of the United States, President Donald J. Trump directed the intelligence community to quickly and fully cooperate with the Attorney General’s investigation into surveillance activities during the 2016 Presidential election.

The Attorney General has also been delegated full and complete authority to declassify information pertaining to this investigation, in accordance with the long-established standards for handling classified information. Today’s action will help ensure that all Americans learn the truth about the events that occurred, and the actions that were taken, during the last Presidential election and will restore confidence in our public institutions.” (read more)

Beijing: No Muslim country criticizes China's position on Xinjiang

China said all the countries criticizing its position on issues related to its northwest Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region are developed countries in the West, whereas no Muslim country or developing country has criticized its position.

In response to a question on the Xinjiang issue at a regular press briefing on Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said the issue is about fighting terrorism and extremism, not about religion and human rights.

Ambassadors from 50 countries to the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) have co-signed a letter to the president of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) and the High Commissioner for Human Rights to voice their support for China's position on issues related to Xinjiang, according to a statement issued by the Chinese Mission to the UNOG on Friday night.

"All the 24 countries criticizing China are developed countries in the West, whose total population is just 600 million," she stressed. "There isn't any Muslim country or developing country [criticizing China]. Countries supporting China can be found in continents such as Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe, with a population of nearly two billion."

She added that the 24 countries criticizing China are also victims of terrorism and extremism, calling counter-terrorism and de-extremism efforts a "global issue."

"The past three years have not seen any terrorist attack in Xinjiang," she told reporters. "Measures taken by the government have been very effective."

The spokeswoman said China welcomes "relevant personnel" from those 24 countries to learn from Xinjiang's experience on fighting terrorism.

Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has taken a number of lawful steps, including setting up vocational education and training centers, to prevent and combat terrorism and extremism, the Chinese Mission to the UNOG said in its statement.

The Chinese government issued two white papers on Xinjiang issues this year – "The Fight Against Terrorism and Extremism and Human Rights Protection in Xinjiang" and "Historical Matters Concerning Xinjiang."

Trump Slams Fed, "King Elijah" & "Conman" Al Sharpton In Furious Twitter Rant

7/29/2019

With one day left until the FOMC begins its two-day monetary policy meeting - said to be the most important policy meeting since the days that immediately followed the financial crisis - President Trump once again slammed the Fed in a tweet, echoing a criticism that he has repeatedly used over the past few weeks.

Which is: That the Fed has failed to cut interest rates to get out ahead of central banks in Europe and China, despite the fact that stubbornly low inflation has left the Fed with every excuse to cut. The PBOC and the ECB will benefit from "pumping money into their systems, making it much easier for their manufacturers to sell product."

He also insisted that if Democrats continued to defend the radical-left "squad" and "King Elijah", that it would be a "long road to 2020."

Finally, Trump lobbed a few insults at one of his favorite targets, Rev. Al Sharpton. Sharpton and Trump were once close friends, and Sharpton "loved Trump!", the president insisted. Trump said Sharpton would always invite Trump to his events as a "personal favor to me."

Unfortunately, Sharpton is nothing more than a "conman", Trump said.

“I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.”

The UK is a curious place. Boris Johnson’s feel-good drive and the numerous plots being arrayed against him, received rather less attention over the weekend than the Minister for the 18th Century’s rather ponderous style guide. Jacob Rees-Mogg, Esquire, has banned a host of words, outlawed clichés, demands double spaces after full-stops, insisted on imperial measure (Kilometers, Kilos and grams are banned), and has made the incorrect use of apostrophes a capital offence. Readers will know my grasp of punctuation, spelling and grammar is nebulous at best – so if I disappear suddenly you can assume the Extreme Grammar-Nazi wing of the Conservative Party has got me!

Back in the real world, this week is largely about tomorrow. Worry not about what’s going on in Hong Kong, the Gulf, or even how bad European economic data might be. Al Sharpton, Maryland Officials Blast Trump's 'Venom for Blacks' After Baltimore Rant

7/29/2019

Facing growing accusations of racism for his incendiary tweets, President Donald Trump is seeking to deflect the criticism by labeling a leading black congressman as himself racist.

In the latest rhetorical shot at lawmakers of color, Trump said his weekend comments referring to Rep. Elijah Cummings’ majority-black Baltimore district as a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess” where “no human being would want to live” were not racist. Instead, Trump argued, “if racist Elijah Cummings would focus more of his energy on helping the good people of his district, and Baltimore itself, perhaps progress could be made in fixing the mess.”

“His radical ‘oversight’ is a joke!” Trump tweeted Sunday.

After a weekend of attacks on Cummings, the son of former sharecroppers who rose to become the powerful chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, Trump expanded his attacks Monday to include a prominent Cummings defender, the Rev. Al Sharpton, who was traveling to Baltimore to hold a press conference in condemnation of the president.

“Al is a con man, a troublemaker, always looking for a score,” Trump tweeted ahead of the press conference, adding that the civil rights activist and MSNBC host “Hates Whites & Cops!”

Sharpton fired back at the president in a tweet of his own, saying, “I do make trouble for bigots.”

Trump appeared to dig a deeper hole even as a top White House aide sought to dismiss the controversy by describing Trump’s comments as hyperbole. Two weeks ago, Trump caused a nationwide uproar with racist tweets directed at four Democratic congresswomen of color as he looked to stoke racial divisions for political gain heading into the 2020 election.

Speaking in television interviews, acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney said Trump was reacting in frustration to the Democrats’ unrelenting investigations and talk of impeachment. He said Trump swung hard at Cummings and his Baltimore district because he believes such Capitol Hill critics are neglecting serious problems back home in their zeal to unfairly undermine his presidency.

“I understand that everything that Donald Trump says is offensive to some people,” Mulvaney said. But he added: “The president is pushing back against what he sees as wrong. It’s how he’s done it in the past, and he’ll continue to do it in the future.”

Mulvaney, a former congressman, said he understood why some people could perceive Trump’s words as racist.

Mulvaney said Trump’s words were exaggerated for effect — “Does the president speak hyperbolically? Absolutely” — and meant to draw attention to Democratic-backed investigations of the Republican president and his team in Washington.

“Instead of helping people back home, they’re focusing on scandal in Washington D.C., which is the exact opposite of what they said they would do when they ran for election in 2018,” Mulvaney said, pointing at Democrats who now control the House.

He asserted that Trump’s barbs were a reaction to what the president considered to be inaccurate statements by Cummings about conditions in which children are being held in detention at the U.S.-Mexico border.

At a hearing last week, Cummings accused a top administration official of wrongly calling reports of filthy, overcrowded border facilities “unsubstantiated.”

“When the president hears lies like that, he’s going to fight back,” Mulvaney said.

Trump’s tweets Saturday also charged that Cummings’ district, which includes Johns Hopkins Hospital, the Social Security Administration and the national headquarters of the NAACP, is “considered the worst run and most dangerous anywhere in the United States.”

Condemnation followed from Democrats over the weekend, including some of the party’s presidential candidates. Statements from a spokesman for Maryland’s Republican governor and from the lieutenant governor defended Cummings’ district and its people.

The president has tried to put racial polarization at the center of his appeal to his base of voters, tapping into anxieties about demographic and cultural changes.

FACT CHECK: Al Sharpton’s History of Racism, Antisemitism, Anti-Police Rhetoric

Al Sharpton has a long history of bigotry that includes anti-white racism, antisemitism, and demonization of law enforcement.

His record has become relevant for two reasons. First, Democratic presidential candidates have been courting his support — with no criticism of his past.

Second, President Donald Trump tweeted Monday morning that Al Sharpton is a “con man” who “Hates Whites & Cops.”

He did so ahead of a press conference planned Monday in Baltimore where Sharpton and former Republican National Committee chair Michael Steele — a frequent Trump critic — were to object to Trump’s recent criticisms of the city. (which were nearly universally shared until Trump made them).

Sharpton’s record matches Trump’s claims.

As Breitbart News noted earlier this year (original links):

Sharpton has a long history of controversial racial rhetoric. In the notorious Tawana Brawley case in 1987, Sharpton backed a teenager’s false accusations of rape, stirring racial divisions in New York and across the country. When he was successfully sued for defamation [by a prosecutor whom Brawley falsely accused of being among her attackers], he refused to pay the judgement, and supporters had to step in on his behalf. Sharpton still refuses to apologize for his role.

In 1991, Sharpton helped incite riots against religious Jews in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn after a black child was killed in a car accident. An enraged mob murdered a visiting Jewish religious student, Yankel Rosenbaum. Rosenbaum’s brother told Breitbart News in 2012: “I have never seen a person be able to avoid being held accountable in substantive terms for his various and significant serious otherwise well publicized misdeeds over such a prolonged period of time, as Sharpton. This is truly an indictment on all those who have done so in the past and continue to do so.” (Sharpton acknowledged some of his “mistakes” in Crown Heights, while protesting his innocence, in a 2011 op-ed in the New York Daily News.)

In another riot in 1995, Sharpton led protests against Freddy’s Fashion Mart, a Jewish-owned store in Harlem, after it was forced to raise the rent on a sub-tenant, a black-owned record store. (Sharpton called the owner a “white interloper.”) One of the protesters later shot four employees and set the store on fire, bringing the death total to seven.

As of 2008, Sharpton’s NAN had massive debts and owed $2 million in taxes, which it claimed to be paying off. In 2014, the New York Times reported that Sharpton had “more than $4.5 million in current state and federal tax liens against him and his for-profit businesses,” which he denied. And in 2009, Sharpton and NAN agreed to pay $285,000 in civil penalties after the Federal Election Commission found that NAN had made improper contributions to his 2004 presidential campaign, when he ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic Party nomination.

In 2012, Sharpton and NAN played a key role in inflaming national division and outrage over the death of Trayvon Martin, who was shot and killed during a scuffle with neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida. Sharpton promoted false reports that Zimmerman used what Sharpton called “racial language” in speaking with police. He used his prime-time program on MSNBC to promote the story, including the claim that Zimmerman — whose mother is Peruvian — was “white,” implying racial bias in the killing.

Despite that record, Sharpton has been rehabilitated by the left and the mainstream media. He hosted Saturday Night Live in 2003. He spoke to the Democratic National Convention in 2004 (breaking with his prepared text to aim a racially-tinged attack at President George W. Bush). He was hired as a host by MSNBC in 2011.

But the most important event in Sharpton’s journey from the fringe to the mainstream was President Barack Obama’s decision to embrace him in 2011, even as other black leaders on the left stepped up their criticism of the administration.

As the Daily Beast reported: “Obama stayed so far away from Sharpton during the 2008 campaign that Sharpton, with Obama’s blessing, never even endorsed him. Yet not only did Obama just become the first president ever to appear at the annual conference of Sharpton’s National Action Network, ten top Obama aides, including six cabinet members, Valerie Jarrett and David Axelrod, spoke at various sessions of the four-day event.”

Today, Democratic hopefuls are beating a path to Sharpton’s door, eager to speak at his NAN podium — with the slogan, “No Justice, No Peace” emblazoned behind them.

Sharpton has also played a leading role in the Black Lives Matter movement, which has demonized police.

Trump presses race as 2020 tactic, slams Cummings and Sharpton

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump on Monday renewed his attacks on a prominent black U.S. lawmaker from Baltimore and slammed black civil rights activist Reverend Al Sharpton, further fueling racial tensions as he linked his attacks to his 2020 re-election bid.

Trump’s weekend remarks disparaging U.S. Representative Elijah Cummings, a House of Representatives Democrat and a longtime civil rights champion, drew charges of racism from Democrats, an accusation Trump denied.

The Republican president earlier in July attacked four racial and ethnic minority Democratic congresswomen in remarks that Democrats and a number of Republicans also called racist.

On Monday, Trump again slammed Cummings and his majority-black congressional district in Baltimore over its high crime rate.

Baltimore Mayor Bernard Young on Monday said Trump should take action to help U.S. cities.

“My message to the president is: stop tweeting and send federal help and federal resources to the city of Baltimore. Not just to the city of Baltimore, to urban cities around the country that are having problems with aging infrastructure, with crime, and grime, and reduction in resources from the federal government,” Young told MSNBC.

Cummings, a veteran legislator and chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, is leading a number of investigations into Trump and his administration, and has criticized the president’s handling of migrants.

Trump also targeted Sharpton, who has defended Cummings and the congressman’s district and was expected to address the issue at an event in Baltimore later on Monday.

Sharpton and Trump have ties going back to their New York City circles, but Trump balked at any close past relationship.

“Just a conman at work!” Trump wrote on Twitter.

Sharpton called the attacks “a sideshow,” adding that Trump, a former reality television personality and real estate developer, has constantly shifted his stance on race.

“This is Trump getting ready for re-election,” Sharpton told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program on Monday. “He will do anything, including to his own supporters, if it is to his advantage.”

DAMASCUS – The US is training a large armed group of terrorists in Syria, said Sergei Rudskoy, chief of the Operational Directorate-General of the Russian Armed Forces.

According to the chief operating officer, some of the combatants trained in the US- controlled Syrian Al-Tanf zone are being transferred in US Air Force helicopters to the Euphrates region.

The best trained saboteurs are sent to areas controlled by the Syrian government to destabilize the situation.

“Their mission is to sabotage, destroy the oil and gas infrastructure and carry out terrorist actions against government units. The presence of such groups is noted in the As-Suwayda, Palmira and Al-Bukamal areas,” said Rudskoy.

Secret transfer of terrorists

Russian intelligence has also revealed information about the secret transfer and concentration of fighters in the southwest part of Syria’s ceasefire Idlib, and preparations are being made for an offensive.

“Intelligence is currently recording the covert transfer and concentration of fighters in the southwest part of the ceasefire zone. At least 500 terrorists from Tahrir al-Sham have been relocated from the northern parts of Idlib province. Preparations are being made for an offensive, “said Rudskoy.

In addition, according to the chief operating officer, the number of foreign-made weapons, including multiple rocket launchers, in the hands of terrorists is also increasing.

“In cooperation with our Turkish colleagues, we are taking steps to identify and eliminate terrorist equipment , weapons and ammunition depots,” he added.

This comes as two weeks ago in the Syrian province of Daraa, militants detonated a bomb on the route of a patrol of the Russian military police, the high command said.

Militants from Syria’s Daraa province carried out a bomb attack on the Russian military police patrol route on Saturday, said Maj. Gen. Aleksey Bakin, head of the Russian Center for Syrian Reconciliation. There were no casualties among Russian troops as a result of the attack, he added.

“A remote-controlled makeshift explosive exploded on July 13, 2019, on the route of patrols of the Russian Armed Forces military police in the Syrian Arab Republic of Daraa province,” Bakin told a news conference.

The attack came a day after another incident, when Russian air defenses at Hmeymim air base shot down three drones launched by militants operating in Idlib security zone.

Since late April, the United Nations has recorded 29 attacks on civilian facilities in northwestern Syria – including 25 in medical clinics – and 45 attacks on schools, with more than 300 civilians killed.

In September 2018, during negotiations in the Russian city of Sochi, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish Recep Tayyip Erdogan established a demilitarized zone in Idlib along the line between the armed opposition and government forces.

The northwestern Idlib province is home to several groups, including the Turkish-backed National Liberation Front and the terrorist group Al-Nusra Front. It is estimated that 30,000 militants, including foreign mercenary fighters, are currently operating in the region.

Australian Muslims are joining international calls to boycott the Hajj

7/28/2019

There are growing calls from Muslims around the world to boycott the annual holy pilgrimage to Mecca over Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen.

Next month more than two million Muslims from around the world are expected to descend on the cities of Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia for the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

But a growing number of Muslims, including some in Australia, are turning their backs on what is one of the central pillars of Islam, and calling for a boycott of the event.

Sydney-based aspiring filmmaker Faraaz Rahman says he believes going to Hajj at the present time is not morally responsible.

“Going for Hajj would financially contribute to the Saudi regime, which currently is carrying out mass atrocities in Yemen against fellow Muslims. This is not what the Hajj is meant to be about,” the 31-year-old told SBS News.

For able-bodied and financially able Muslims, going to the Hajj at least once in life is considered a religious obligation by many.

But in April, Libya’s most famous Sunni Grand Mufti, Sadiq al-Gharawani, appealed to Muslims around the world to boycott the Hajj pilgrimage over Saudi Arabia’s human rights abuses. He is one of the most prominent Sunni Muslim leaders to call for the boycott, but he is far from alone.

The social media hashtag #BoycottHajj has trended on Twitter in some Muslim majority countries.

“Before there might have been fringe groups here and there, without any traction… but now prominent leaders are calling for it [boycott]. I hope that that leads to other religious authorities to pick up and make similar calls,” Mr Rahman said

Another Australian Muslim based in Melbourne, who didn't want to be identified, said that while calling for a boycott of the Hajj was a drastic step, it was necessary.

"I believe there is no other option left for the Muslim people around the world than to boycott Saudi Arabia, to give them the message that this madness [in Yemen] should end," he said.

"If the money is funnelling into the Saudi economy and that money is being utilised to imposing continuous misery on the people of Yemen, then people have a moral, religious obligation to stand up," he said.

"The world has a responsibility to stand up, especially Muslims," he added

Emma Husar, BuzzFeed settle 'sexually perverted' claim case

A former federal MP and a news site have settled a defamation case out of court over an article airing misconduct allegations inside the politician's office.

Former federal MP Emma Husar has settled a defamation case with BuzzFeed after she claimed the news site portrayed her as "a slut" and "sexually perverted".

The deal is expected to be signed off in the coming days by the publication's United States management and reporter Alice Workman, a lawyer for Ms Husar told AAP on Monday.

The matter is then scheduled to return to the Federal Court for the final time on August 6.

Ms Workman, now a journalist for The Australian, had published allegations of misconduct made against Ms Husar and examined as part of a confidential internal Labor investigation.

The ALP inquiry found Ms Husar had mistreated her electorate staff but did not find evidence to support claims of sexual harassment or that she'd flashed another federal MP.

Ms Husar claimed the publications conveyed a number of false and defamatory meanings about her including that she was a "slut who boasts about who she has had sex with, which includes other members of parliament and members of her staff".

BuzzFeed said the publications did not suggest the MP was a slut and maintained a truth defence to allegations that Ms Husar was "sexually perverted" and "engaged in inappropriate sexualised behaviour toward her staff".

Putin critic hospitalised after mystery 'allergy' in prison

Putin critic Alexei Navalny may have been exposed to an 'unknown chemical substance'.

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was "poisoned" by an unidentified toxic substance and doctors have sent him back to jail despite his condition, his lawyer and personal physician said Monday.

The 43-year-old, President Vladimir Putin's most prominent critic, was rushed to hospital on Sunday with swollen eyelids, discharge in the eye and a rash on his upper body, doctor Anastasia Vasilyeva said.

"It is indeed poisoning by some unknown chemical substance," his lawyer Olga Mikhailova told reporters outside Moscow's hospital No 64, which treated Navalny.

Vasilyeva wrote on Facebook that "some toxic agent may be the reason for Alexei Navalny's 'illness'".

Navalny has been in jail since last week for calling an unauthorised rally.

After his hospitalisation on Sunday doctors diagnosed Navalny with a skin condition, Vasilyeva said.

They treated him with a steroid and he got better, but he has been sent back to jail despite needing to continue the treatment, she told reporters.

She also said she suspected his prison cell could be contaminated.

Vasilyeva is an ophthalmologist who had treated Navalny previously for an eye injury.

She accused the hospital doctors of not wanting to find out what caused Navalny's condition.

"Alexei has been clearly sent back to the detention centre on orders from above," she said, referring to the authorities.

Navalny was jailed for calling a rally against authorities' move to block prominent independent candidates from taking part in Moscow parliament elections in September.

2/3rd Senate vote required to impeach POTUS.

Logical thinking.

You are watching D's 'con' liberal base using 'hope' tactics while maintaining 'POTUS obstruction of Justice' FAKE NEWS narrative.

Think 2020.

Doesn't he cite in there somewhere because of the upcoming elections and a congressional investigation.

…but to your point, heaven forbid they should find a blaze of smoking guns where Hill is concerned and she would wind up in cuffs instead of some election podium via his research. ANYWAY it Prolly saved his life not looking at them

'''Executive director of House Democrats' campaign arm resigns

The move follows Democratic lawmaker complaints that the committee did not have enough diversity in leadership positions'''

By Alex Moe and Rebecca Shabad

WASHINGTON — Amid growing concerns about the lack of diversity among the senior ranks of House Democrats’ campaign arm, its executive director announced Monday that she was resigning from her leadership position, NBC News has confirmed.

Allison Jaslow announced her resignation at an all-staff meeting, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the development, and said that it was effective immediately.

According to a report published by Politico, her resignation came as DCCC Chairwoman Cheri Bustos, a congresswoman from Illinois, tries to deal with concerns among Democratic lawmakers that the campaign committee doesn’t have enough diversity in leadership positions.

Bustos, according to the report, flew back to Washington Monday from her district to deal with the situation, which comes on the first week of the House’s six-week recess.

In a weekend statement, Hispanic lawmakers Reps. Filemon Vela and Vicente González of Texas had called for Jaslow to step down from her role.

“The DCCC is now in complete chaos,” they said in their joint statement. “The single most immediate action that Cheri Bustos can take to restore confidence in the organization and to promote diversity is to appoint a qualified person of color, of which there are many, as executive director at once. We find the silence of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus on this issue to be deafening.”

One top House Democratic source told NBC News “someone had to go.”

Jaslow had served as the DCCC’s executive director since December, after House Democrats won back control of the House. According to her LinkedIn profile, she previously worked as an independent consultant and before that, as the executive director of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.

“As I told the team today, they are without a doubt the most talented group of people I’ve ever worked with in my life," Jaslow said in a statement posted on Twitter. "It was an honor and a true privilege to work with them every day and know with confidence that the Democratic House Majority will be protected with their relentless dedication, and under the leadership of Chairwoman Bustos.”
