Not knowing what words mean.... let's both ignorant and not-so-ignorant word users change the meaning to suit themselves. Knowing gives you a place to stand in the discussion. I'd suggest buying a big old dictionary, used, and plopping it in the bathroom for those short reading exercises. Also, you can drop into it at random--might learn something. I also like the internet for this, and I adore pronunciation recordings. The more you know....
