President Barack Obama didn’t show up at the Vatican for his meeting with Pope Francis on Thursday empty-handed — he brought the Roman Catholic leader a gift straight from the White House garden.
Obama presented the Pope with a custom seed chest that included seeds for fruits and vegetables used in the White House garden, according to pool reports.
“These I think are carrots,” the president said, holding a pouch, according to pool reports. “Each one has a different seed in it. The box is made from timber from the first cathedral to open in the United States, in Baltimore.”
The chest is made from American leather and wood reclaimed from the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin May, a Baltimore, Md., cathedral that was the first major metropolitan cathedral built in the U.S. after the signing of the Constitution.

WASHINGTON — Pope Francis has appointed Auxiliary Bishop Mark Brennan of Baltimore to head the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, West Virginia.
In West Virginia, he fills the vacancy left by the resignation of Bishop Michael Bransfield last September; he turned 75 Sept. 8, 2018, the age at which canon law requires bishops to turn in their resignation to the pope. When Pope Francis accepted his resignation Sept. 13, 2018, he left under a cloud of allegations of sexual and financial misconduct. The same day, Pope Francis named Baltimore Archbishop William Lori apostolic administrator of the statewide diocese.
Brennan's appointment was announced July 23 in Washington by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, the Vatican nuncio to the United States.
