Former Trump aide Stephen Miller launches group targeting Biden’s policies

Former President Donald Trump’s senior aide Stephen Miller has launched a new organization that aims to challenge the Biden administration’s policies in courts — and is being billed as a conservative American Civil Liberties Union.
Miller, the architect of the Trump White House’s immigration policies, launched America First Legal this week, which will work with Republican attorneys general around the country to push back against President Biden’s rollback of Trump’s policies.
Trump put out a statement Wednesday promoting the project, and urging his supporters to get behind it.
“Stephen Miller is a fearless, principled fighter for the America First movement. He has backbone, integrity, and never gives up. As we know, the Radical Left has been relentless in waging their battles in court. Conservatives and America First supporters badly need to catch up and turn the tables, which is why I applaud Stephen and Mark Meadows for rushing to fill this critical void,” Trump said in a statement released Wednesday.
“The era of unilateral legal surrender must end—and I hope all America First patriots will get behind America First Legal,” it added.
Jason Miller, Trump’s senior adviser, tweeted about the organization Wednesday morning and linked to a report in the Wall Street Journal about it.
The report said Stephen Miller would enlist lawyers from the Trump administration, GOP attorneys general and other attorneys around the country to help them in their cases against Biden.
“Anything the president does that we believe to be illegal is fair game,” Stephen Miller told the newspaper.
He described the new organization as something of a conservative version of the ACLU, adding that the nonprofit group often targeted the Trump administration.
When the Trump White House rolled out a new initiative, “we wouldn’t get just one lawsuit in one court, we’d get six lawsuits in six courts,” he said.
“It was an extraordinarily effective tactic, and there’s no counterpoint to that on our side,” Stephen Miller said.
America Legal First counts former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and former acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker as supporters, and both sit on the organization’s board.

Israel-Iran Sea Skirmishes Escalate as Mine Damages Iranian Military Ship
An Iranian military vessel stationed in the Red Sea was damaged by an apparent Israeli mine attack on Tuesday in an escalation of the shadowy naval skirmishing that has characterized the two adversaries’ exchanges in recent years.
The damage to the vessel, which Iranian media identified as the Saviz, came as progress was reported on the first day of talks to revive American participation in the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and major world powers. Israel, which regards Iran as its most potent foe, strongly opposes a restoration of that agreement, which was abandoned by the Trump administration three years ago.
Several Iranian news outlets showed images of flames and smoke billowing from a stricken vessel in the Red Sea, but the full extent of the damage or any casualties was unclear.
The Saviz, though technically classified as a cargo ship, was the first vessel deployed for military use that is known to have been attacked in the Israeli-Iranian skirmishes.
A social media account of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps said the vessel had been deployed in the Red Sea for some time to combat pirates. The Tasnim news agency, the media outlet of the Revolutionary Guards, said the Saviz had been damaged by a mine that had been attached to the vessel.
There was no official Iranian confirmation of the attack as of Tuesday night, but several Telegram social media channels operated by members of the Revolutionary Guards blamed Israel for the explosion.
Israeli officials had not commented as of Tuesday night, and as a matter of policy they seldom confirm or deny responsibility for actions taken against Iran. But an American official said the Israelis had notified the United States that its forces had struck the vessel at about 7:30 a.m. local time.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to share private intelligence communications, said that the Israelis had called the attack a retaliation for earlier Iranian strikes on Israeli vessels, and that the Saviz had been damaged below the water line. The vessel’s precise location in the Red Sea was not immediately clear.

Russian Navy Seabed Warfare Capabilities
Click to enlarge. Russian seabed warfare capabilities can target underwater infrastructure including internet communications. Platforms include 1) Large host submarines which deploy deep-diving nuclear-powered submersibles. 2) The special intelligence ship Yantar which can deploy remote operated vehicles (ROVs) and crewed submersibles. 3) Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). 4) Dual-use crewed submersibles such as rescue submarines which can also work on cables. 5) trained Beluga whales and possibly seals or dolphins.
5 Ways The Russian Navy Could Target Undersea Internet Cables
It is estimated that 97% of global communications are transmitted by undersea cables. This includes trillions of dollars of financial transactions. These cables have been described as 'Indispensable but insecure'. They are thought to be particularly vulnerable to the Russian Navy's seabed warfare platforms. And it is not just internet traffic which could be under threat, but energy infrastructure, military communications and sensor networks.
NOAA Fisheries Announces Gear and Harvest Limits at Artificial Reef Sites in the South Atlantic Region
April 6, 2021 | Fishing
NOAA Fisheries announces the final rule for Regulatory Amendment 34 to the Fishery Management Plan for the Snapper-Grouper Fishery of the South Atlantic Region. The final rule will create 34 special management zones around artificial reefs off North Carolina and South Carolina.
There will be additional gear and harvest restrictions within the proposed special management zones. The purpose of the gear restrictions is to reduce adverse effects to federally managed species at these sites.
WHEN THIS RULE WILL TAKE EFFECT:
Regulations will be effective May 3, 2021.
SUMMARY OF CHANGES:
The final rule will create special management zones around select artificial reef sites off North Carolina (30) and off South Carolina (4).
The zones range in size from 0.041 to 1.01 square miles.
Harvest of snapper-grouper species will only be allowed with handline, rod and reel, and spear in these zones. Therefore, this action will prohibit the use of bandit reel, powerhead, pot, and longline gear at these sites.
In the special management zones off North Carolina, harvest of snapper-grouper species by spear will be limited to the applicable recreational bag limit.
In the special management zones off South Carolina, harvest of snapper-grouper species with all gear types will be limited to the applicable recreational bag limit.

https://m.washingtontimes.com/news/2021/apr/6/backpage-founders-lose-bid-for-new-judge-at-upcomi/
PHOENIX (AP) - An appeals court has rejected a bid by the former operators of Backpage.com to recuse a judge in Arizona from presiding over their upcoming trial on prostitution facilitation charges because of statements made by the judge’s husband about human trafficking and the now-shuttered classified ad site.
The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals concluded on Monday that Judge Susan Brnovich made no clear error in rejecting the recusal request made by Backpage founders Michael Lacey, James Larkin and other former site managers, who argued that letting her remain on the case, scheduled to go to trial Aug. 23, could lead people to question the court’s impartiality.
The site’s former operators had criticized statements made in a human trafficking booklet published by Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich’s office, which describes the ad site as a place where sex is frequently purchased. Their lawyers said the attorney general has invited members of the public to visit websites that contain inflammatory information about Backpage and its operators and that the attorney general has publicly claimed that the site facilitated sex trafficking.
The case against the former Backpage operators is being prosecuted by the U.S. Justice Department, not the Arizona Attorney General’s Office.
Paul Cambria, an attorney for Lacey, and Thomas Bienert, a lawyer representing Larkin, didn’t return a call seeking comment on behalf of their clients.
Brnovich spokeswoman Katie Conner said the attorney general wasn’t going to comment on the ruling, but said she believes “it’s abhorrent that the defendants in this case insinuate a woman can’t speak and think for herself.”
In rejecting the recusal request five months ago, Judge Brnovich wrote she will remain impartial and said no informed, reasonable person would question her ability to be just and fair based on her marriage. She wrote the attorney general didn’t make any derogatory comments about those who are charged in the case. Judge Brnovich pointed out that defense lawyers waited more than 17 months to try to take her off the case even though the attorneys knew the judge was married to the attorney general when she was assigned it.
Prosecutors said it was anachronistic to suggest an experienced judge is unable to impartially preside over a case because of her husband’s views. They also said the bid to recuse the judge came after she made adverse rulings against them, including decisions in which she refused to dismiss charges.
Authorities said the former website’s operators are accused of ignoring warnings to stop running prostitution ads and that the site brought in $500 million in prostitution-related revenue.
Prosecutors alleged the site gave free ads to prostitutes and cultivated arrangements with others who worked in the sex trade to get them to post ads with the company. Some of the site’s operators also are accused of laundering money earned from ad sales after banks raised concerns that they were being used for illegal purposes.
The former Backpage operators said the site never allowed ads for sex and used people and automated tools to try to delete such ads.
While prosecutors say the site published many ads that depicted children who were victims of sex trafficking, no one in the federal case in Arizona is charged with sex trafficking or child sex trafficking.
In all, six former Backpage operators have pleaded not guilty to charges of facilitating prostitution. Of the six, Lacey, Larkin and two others have pleaded guilty to money laundering charges.
The site’s marketing director has already pleaded guilty to conspiring to facilitate prostitution and acknowledged he participated in a scheme to give free ads to prostitutes to win over their business.
Additionally, the company’s chief executive, Carl Ferrer, pleaded guilty to a separate federal conspiracy case in Arizona and to state money laundering charges in California.

“1,000 'woke' companies unite against election-integrity laws!”
– https://www.wnd.com/2021/04/4905837/. Below are a few excerpts.
Civic Alliance includes McDonalds, Amazon, Verizon, Microsoft, PayPal, Uber
The opposition of major corporations such as Coca-Cola and Delta to a Georgia election law has drawn attention to an alliance of more than 1,000 companies that, in effect, have identified themselves as opponents of voting integrity.
The Civic Alliance boasts on its website [https://www.civicalliance.com/] that its membership has grown to 1,119 companies that employee more than 5 million people.
"As a coalition of businesses, we use our voice, our brand, and our reach to strengthen our democracy. We support safe, accessible, and trusted elections, and we inspire our employees and customers to participate in civic life," the alliance says.
However, the objective of making elections "accessible" translates to opposition to laws such as Georgia's that seek to ensure that every vote represents a legitimate voter and that voters are not disenfranchised.
Amid the controvesy over Georgia's law, the Civic Alliance issued a letter last Friday condemning any effort to "restrict" ballot access, signed by 200 companies, including Salesforce, ViacomCBS and The Estée Lauder Companies.
"Companies have their fingers on the pulse of what's going on with their consumers and employees, and this is a priority for folks and so companies are making it a priority for themselves," said Mike Ward, co-founder of the Civic Alliance, NBC News reported.
The letter said in part, "We stand in solidarity with voters – and with the Black executives and leaders at the helm of this movement – in our nonpartisan commitment to equality and democracy."
The statement said there are "hundreds of bills threatening to make voting more difficult in dozens of states nationwide."
The alliance's membership reads like a who's who of corporate America, featuring Amazon, Verizon, McDonalds, Microsoft, PayPal, Uber, Airbnb, Best Buy, Capitol One, Dow, Hewlett Packard, Macy's, Starbucks, United Airlines, Under Armour and Pepsico.
Civic Alliance says it's "ambitious goal is 80 percent voter turnout." [Wasn’t there more than 100% voter turnout in certain states?]
"We may have a long way to go, but by working together, we will create a culture where civics matter and participation is a habit, it says.
The alliance asks companies that become members to agree to a pledge:
We believe the strength of the United States lies in its people, each with the power and the potential to shape the future of our country.
Together, our companies have the platform and the reach to encourage every American to speak up, achieving the promise of their participation.
Like all Americans, our companies have unique values. Yet we are united in envisioning a future where everyone is engaged in civics, starting with voting in every election.
WND reported Monday a website called Stop Corporate Tyranny has been launched by a center-right coalition that aims to help citizens combat "the Left’s weaponization of corporate America against traditional beliefs and values."
The site offers activism campaigns in which citizens can engage. One of the latest responds to the corporations headquartered in Georgia that are opposing the election law.
After condemnation of the law by the CEO of Delta Air Lines, the Coca-Cola Company, President Biden and others, Major League Baseball decided Friday to withdraw the All-Star Game from Atlanta. [Yet Delta requires an ID to board their planes.]
Many Democrats contend requiring voter ID is racist, insisting such laws suppress the vote among minorities.
But Candace Owens, a black conservative activist and author, said Monday that any corporation "telling you that Voter ID laws are racist is run by white supremacists."
"Black people know how to get ID," she wrote on Twitter, with the hashtags #coke and #delta.
"Pretending we are too stupid to figure out how to get to the DMV is an insult and speaks volumes about what Democrats truly think about us."
White House: Americans Not Required to Carry ‘Vaccine Passports’
April 6, 2021
White House press secretary on Tuesday said that CCP virus “vaccine passports” will not be developed or supported by the Biden administration, coming after several GOP governors issued executive orders barring them.
“The government is not now, nor will we be supporting a system that requires Americans to carry a credential. There will be no federal vaccinations database and no federal mandate requiring everyone to obtain a single vaccination credential,” Psaki told reporters on Tuesday at the White House.
Psaki last month responded to reports that the administration was working with private firms to create a passport system, saying the administration would provide guidance.
“Our interest is very simple from the federal government, which is American’s privacy and rights should be protected so that these systems are not used against people unfairly,” Psaki clarified Tuesday. She again said the government would provide guidance on privacy concerns related to vaccines.
Some countries have either proposed or are using a vaccine passport-style system. But it has been criticized by civil liberties groups, who said it would potentially violate Americans’ privacy rights while denying key services to people who are not vaccinated.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, issued an executive order Monday that would bar their usage.
“Government should not require any Texan to show proof of vaccination and reveal private health information just to go about their daily lives,” Abbott said in a statement.
And Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, issued a similar order last week after having criticized the passports as a “terrible idea.”
New York state, however, rolled out its “Excelsior Pass” system that would mandate people show that they have been vaccinated when trying to enter certain events and locations such as Madison Square Garden in New York City. It’s not yet clear if the Excelsior Pass will be used in other places.
On Tuesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that it does not recommend vaccine passport-style systems “at this time,” citing concerns about whether the vaccine is actually effective in reducing the transmission of the CCP virus as well as the lack of vaccinations being done in certain parts of the world.
“We as WHO are saying at this stage we would not like to see the vaccination passport as a requirement for entry or exit because we are not certain at this stage that the vaccine prevents transmission,” WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris told a news conference in Geneva, Switzerland, as reported by the Reuters news agency.

Russia is testing a nuclear torpedo in the Arctic that has the power to trigger radioactive tsunamis off the US coast
Russia is reportedly planning to deploy a nuclear-powered missile to the Arctic next summer which is designed to detonate off the coastlines of enemy countries, as the country amasses a growing presence in the region, CNN reported.
Satellite images this week provided to CNN by Maxar, a satellite company, indicate that is Russia testing new weapons in the region and building significant military infrastructure there, which is increasingly free of ice due to climate change.
CNN reported that Russia will deploy the Poseidon 2M39 missile to its Arctic region next summer, which has been referred to in reports as a "doomsday" device due to its devastating power.
The device, images of which first surfaced on Russian state television in 2015, is an underwater nuclear torpedo that is designed to hit the ocean floor, kicking up a radioactive tsunami that could spread deadly radiation over thousands of miles of land, rendering it uninhabitable.
Russian President Vladimir Putin requested an update on a "key stage" of the tests in February from his defense minister and further tests are expected later this year, the Times of London newspaper reported.
Russia and NATO countries with a presence in the Arctic region have both been increasing their activity there in recent years as rising sea temperatures make it more accessible, Insider's Christopher Woody reported.
Russia has the world's longest Arctic coastline and derives around a quarter of its GDP from the region, and the Northern Sea Route is a valuable shipping corridor for Moscow.
The Pentagon on Monday said it was watching reports of Russian military activities and infrastructure build-ups in the Arctic "very closely."
"Without getting into specific intelligence assessments, obviously we're monitoring it very closely," said Pentagon press secretary John F. Kirby at a briefing Monday.
"Obviously we're watching this, and as I said before, we have national security interests there that we know … we need to protect and defend," Kirby said.
"And as I said, nobody's interested in seeing the Arctic become militarized."

Ukraine’s admission to NATO will only exacerbate crisis in southeast, Kremlin says
Earlier on Tuesday, Zelensky said that a NATO membership is the only way to end the war in Donbass
MOSCOW, April 6. /TASS/. Kiev will only aggravate the domestic Ukrainian crisis by its decision to join NATO, this idea is unacceptable for people living in the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR, LPR), Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters Tuesday.
"We deeply doubt that it will somehow help Ukraine to deal with its internal problem. From our point of view, it will only exacerbate the situation further because people’s opinions cannot be overlooked in any way when you talk about joining NATO. And if you ask opinions of several million people in the self-proclaimed republics, you will understand that such a membership in NATO is deeply unacceptable for these people," he underlined.
Earlier on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that a NATO membership is the only way to end the war in Donbass.
The situation in Donbass aggravated in late February, exchanges of fire were reported almost daily, particularly with the use of mortars and grenade launchers. The parties to the conflict placed the blame for the exacerbation on each other. Russian President Vladimir Putin held a videoconference on March 30 with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. In particular, Putin expressed concerns by Ukraine’s moves to aggravate the situation in Donbass.
