The Tennessee Legislature has passed a major reform bill that would require all absentee ballots to contain a watermark for added security.
As noted by The Center Square, the state House passed the Tennessee Election Integrity Act on a 92-1 vote last week.
On Monday, 27 state senators voted in favor of the measure, while one member who was present abstained from voting.
“We just passed legislation I co-sponsored that requires a non-visible watermark be placed on every mailed absentee ballot, further ensuring the integrity of ballots and elections in TN,” GOP state Rep. Jason Zachary tweeted April 27. “No watermark, the ballot is rejected.”
The bill now heads to GOP Gov. Bill Lee, who is expected to sign it into law.

The people of Ecuador were hit by a surprise in the April 2021 presidential election: Hard-right banker Guillermo Lasso, one of the richest and most corrupt oligarchs in the country, who had unsuccessfully run in two previous races, scored a narrow victory over leftist Andrés Arauz.
Arauz, a progressive young economist, had served as a minister in the government of Ecuador’s socialist President Rafael Correa, who had declared a “Citizens’ Revolution” that transformed the country during his term from 2007 to 2017.
What was not conveyed in most media reports on Lasso’s surprising victory, however, was that Lasso only won thanks to the support he received, both directly and indirectly, from environmental and Indigenous groups that have been co-opted over that last 15 years by the US government and its soft-power networks.
The leaders of these opportunistic, pseudo-left organizations have benefited from millions of dollars in funding from CIA cutouts like the US Agency for International Development and National Endowment for Democracy. Together, they formed an alliance of convenience with Lasso against the Correísta movement.
Some even endorsed the multimillionaire banker openly, overlooking his well-documented corruption, including offshore bank accounts and tens of millions of dollars of real estate in Florida. Others, including right-leaning leaders in Ecuador’s powerful Indigenous confederation, CONAIE, called on their followers to vote null in the April 11 presidential election rather than support the leftist Arauz.
CONAIE’s decision to call for a null vote was perhaps the most important factor in making Lasso Ecuador’s next president. The 2021 election saw a massive increase in politically motivated null votes, with 1.1 million more than in the previous election in 2017. The total of 1.76 million null votes greatly outnumbered the 420,000 votes that Arauz lost by.
The role that conservative leaders of CONAIE, the confederation’s political arm Pachakutik, and “green” NGOs played in getting a notoriously corrupt neoliberal banker elected in Ecuador was hardly a secret. In fact, Pachakutik’s presidential candidate, Yaku Pérez, boasted of defeating Arauz immediately after the election, triumphantly tweeting in all caps, “Pachakutik and the null vote bury Correísmo.”

Pope Francis Tells ‘Vax Live’ Concertgoers to Abandon Individualism

ROME — Pope Francis sent a video message to participants in the Vax Live concert in Los Angeles Sunday night, urging concertgoers “not to forget the most vulnerable” in vaccine distribution.
In his Spanish-language message, the pontiff prayed that the “Creator God would infuse in our hearts a new, generous spirit to abandon our individualisms and promote the common good.”
“I beg you not to forget the most vulnerable,” he said.
Sunday’s concert was hosted by Selena Gomez and Prince Harry and featured messages from President and Mrs. Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as well as live support from Hollywood stars Jennifer Lopez, Ben Affleck, Sean Penn, and others.
In his address to the thousands of fully vaccinated attendees at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Prince Harry lauded the work of healthcare personnel during the coronavirus pandemic.
“Tonight is a celebration of each of you here, the vaccinated frontline workers in the audience and the millions of frontline heroes around the world,” he said.

The pope has insisted that priority should not be given to the rich in the distribution of vaccines against the coronavirus, but that special attention should be given to the poor.

Following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s failure to cobble together a ruling coalition by Wednesday’s deadline, President Reuven Rivlin has tasked the opposition, led by Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid, with a chance to form an alternative government.
While Netanyahu’s Likud Party was the largest among all Israeli political parties in the March elections, he could not gather enough support to form a 61-seat majority needed to cross the threshold.
Under Israel’s Basic Law — a form of quasi-constitution — Rivlin grants a “mandate” to the leader of the party most likely to be able to form a governing coalition. In this case, Netanyahu was given the first mandate and Lapid, who secured the recommendations of 56 MKs to become Israel’s next prime minister, the second.
Lapid (pictured) vowed to do everything in his power to allow for the rapid formation of a unity government, which would be comprised of disparate factions from the left, the Arab parties and the right.
“After two years of political paralysis, Israeli society is hurting. A unity government isn’t a compromise or a last resort — it’s a goal, it’s what we need,” Lapid said in a statement.
Lapid went on: “We need a government that will reflect the fact that we don’t hate one another. A government in which left, right and center will work together to tackle the economic and security challenges we face. A government that will show that our differences are a source of strength, not weakness.”
The so-called “change” bloc, or the anti-Netanyahu coalition, may also fall short after the 28 days are up, likely prompting a fifth round of elections since 2019.

Meghan McCain: MAGA ‘Sausage-Fest’ Is ‘Shivving’ Liz Cheney for Not Worshiping ‘Cheeto Jesus’
Meghan McCain told her co-hosts Wednesday on ABC’s “The View” that Republican lawmakers were being a “MAGA sausage-fest” for planning to remove Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) from her leadership role for “refusing to debase herself to Cheeto Jesus,” referring to former President Donald Trump.
McCain said, “What’s going on is Liz Cheney, by the way, was already, by the way, voted in January to stay in her position and overwhelmingly had support to stay when they tried to oust her before. What’s happening is it’s clear. I’m going to be a little crass. They’re shivving her for her going on television multiple times and saying the election wasn’t stolen and refusing to debase herself to Cheeto Jesus.”
She continued, “I don’t understand what is going on. I’ve spent the last five years of my life trying to accept, understand and include the MAGA base of this party. The message that’s being sent by the highest member of Republicans in Congress is that women like me and Liz Cheney, who refuse to bend the knee to President Trump but still remain loyal Republicans, we don’t have a place in this party. We are worthless. We’re not worth fighting for to keep. I think it’s fakakta-esque to try and spin this in a way that this is anything else but her not supporting President Trump.”
PA Gov. Tom Wolf Faces Ballot Initiative Which Would Effectively Strip Him of Emergency Coronavirus Powers
The municipal primary elections are May 18, where voters will face four statewide questions on their ballot, two of which directly relate to the governor’s emergency powers.
One of those questions asks if the state constitution should be amended to “change existing law and increase the power of the General Assembly to unilaterally terminate or extend a disaster emergency declaration — and the powers of Commonwealth agencies to address the disaster regardless of its severity pursuant to that declaration — through passing a concurrent resolution by simple majority, thereby removing the existing check and balance of presenting a resolution to the Governor for approval or disapproval.”
The second question related to emergency powers asks if the state constitution should be amended to make disaster emergency declarations expire automatically after 21 days:
Shall the Pennsylvania Constitution be amended to change existing law so that: a disaster emergency declaration will expire automatically after 21 days, regardless of the severity of the emergency, unless the General Assembly takes action to extend the disaster emergency; the Governor may not declare a new disaster emergency to respond to the dangers facing the Commonwealth unless the General Assembly passes a concurrent resolution; the General Assembly enacts new laws for disaster management?
According to the WJACTV, the questions are related to actions the legislature took last June after lawmakers attempted to end the pandemic emergency:
But the courts ruled that Gov. Tom Wolf still had the ability to veto the resolution, which he did. The house failed to get the two-thirds vote needed to override the veto, so the emergency overture was dead.

Roy Gordon Cole: Man Shot Dead by FBI at CIA Headquarters

Roy Gordon Cole was shot and killed by FBI agents outside the CIA headquarters in Virginia. The shooting happened on May 3, 2021, near the Central Intelligence Agency’s gates in Langley.
Cole died of gunshot wounds to the “torso and upper extremities,” according to a statement from the Northern District of the Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner provided to The Washington Post. The statement on the autopsy report did not reveal how many times Cole was shot, according to The Post. The manner of death was ruled as a homicide, the newspaper reported.
The shooting is under investigation, according to a statement from the FBI. The CIA said in a statement to CNN, “Our compound remains secured, and our Security Protective Officers working the incident are the only Agency personnel directly involved.”
