Who will be qualified as domestic terrorists?: Controversial bill prompted by the Jan. 6 riots

The controversial bill prompted by the Jan. 6 riots on Capitol Hill, which reportedly threatens to replace civil liberties, called the Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act of 2021 (DTPA) is causing a stir among Americans.

For author Robert Wheeler, “The DTPA is essentially the criminalization of speech, expression, and thought. It takes cancel culture a step further and all but outlaws unpopular opinions,” he wrote on Jan. 27 on the website The Organic Prepper.

He added, “This act will empower intelligence, law enforcement, and even military wings of the American ruling class to crack down on individuals adhering to certain belief systems and ideologies.”

The DTPA authorizes the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to monitor, investigate, and prosecute domestic terrorism cases.

This bill is very much oriented against so-called white supremacy, without defining what is understood as such.

It directs the Department of Defense to create an interagency task force to combat the infiltration of white supremacists into the uniformed services and federal law enforcement.

Since the DTPA was promoted in the wake of the riots that occurred on Capitol Hill on Jan. 6, for critics it goes against Americans who voted for former President Trump.

Trump himself was accused of instigating violence, even though no evidence of this was presented, but on the contrary, he invited the demonstrators to calm down and return to their homes.

For her part, former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard considers that the bill effectively criminalizes half of the country.

“You start looking at obviously, have to be a White Person, obviously likely male, libertarians, anyone who loves freedom, liberty, maybe has an American flag outside their house, or people who, you know, attended a Trump rally,” Gabbard said, according to The Washington Times.

She added, “What characteristics are we looking for as we are building this profile of a potential extremist, what are we talking about? Religious extremists, are we talking about Christians, evangelical Christians, what is a religious extremist? Is it somebody who is pro-life? Where do you take this.”

Along with Gabbard other citizens also expressed concern about how the law could be used.

“Be very concerned. America is disappearing as a free country,” tweeted netizen @AlistairNic alluding to the DTPA on Jan. 30.

“This weaponizes gov agencies to go after political opponents based on spirit of comments. It’s horrifying!” commented Twitter user @DougFussell1.
