Fast and furious:Army to test laser weapon as it looks to field rapidly developed system next year

REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. — The Pentagon is betting big that laser weapons, once firmly confined to the realm of science fiction, will prove to be critical battlefield technology as the Army’s first prototype laser weapon is set for its initial live-fire test this month.
It took the Army, with defense contractor Kord Technologies, less than two years to build the first Directed Energy Maneuver Short-Range Air Defense system, or DE M-SHORAD — a Stryker A1 vehicle outfitted with a 50-kilowatt high-energy laser. Army officials want to field the first four DE M-SHORADs to soldiers by late next year to provide highly mobile air defense protection against new world threats like armed enemy drones.
In a battery of tests — beginning next week — the Army and Kord want to prove DE M-SHORAD’s ability to locate airborne threats, instantaneously lock on and track and then destroy them in a matter of seconds. The technology has “game-changing” potential for close range air defense against the near-peer rivals — namely China and Russia — that the Pentagon has shifted its focus to in recent years, said Gen. Joseph Martin, the Army’s vice chief of staff. Martin saw the first DE M-SHORAD prototype April 29 during a visit to the Army’s Redstone Arsenal in Alabama.
“Twenty-three months ago this was just an idea,” Martin said after crawling through the prototype system at Kord’s Huntsville headquarters just outside Redstone’s gates. “It’s very promising. It’s very powerful. There (are) many things we’ve got to do in terms of testing, and it’s about to go through a shootout to see how it does. But I can’t wait … to see what they can do with it.”
Martin has seen firsthand why the Army needs easily deployed systems to protect soldiers from quickly advancing airborne threats. As a two-star in command of U.S. and coalition land forces in Iraq in 2016 and 2017, Martin watched as Islamic State terrorists outfitted small commercially developed drones with grenades and other munitions to kill and maim the Iraqi troops he was responsible for training.
“ISIS took off-the-shelf [unmanned aerial systems,] weaponized them and used them very effectively against the Iraqis,” Martin recalled. “And so we had to come up with some solutions. And we did.”
Now, the Army must look to give its soldiers the best chance to defend themselves against much more advanced threats, much like the United States military uses against its own enemies including airplane-size drones with advanced, guided missiles.
In a training scenario described by officials at Kord’s headquarters, radar on the DE M-SHORAD detects an enemy drone about 8 kilometers in the distance. The laser locks onto the drone, tracking it as it moves closer to the vehicle. When the DE M-SHORAD detects incoming mortar fire, the laser quickly moves to intercept the incoming rounds and fires, instantaneously sending heated energy at the round, which is destroyed in seconds. The laser then returns to the drone, destroying it several seconds later.
“We’ve got a target acquisition system that can sense and lock on and then strike a moving mortar round, a moving cruise missile, an unmanned aerial system and other aircraft with energy sufficient to the point that it will penetrate and disrupt that particular munition or platform’s ability to do accomplish its mission. That’s an incredible power to have,” Martin said. “That is the kind of capability we have to have, and it demonstrates our ability to respond to the world around us with technology.”

Ric Grenell, who served as acting director of National Intelligence in the Trump administration, is blasting Susan Rice and says she is acting as a “shadow president.”
His comments came during an interview on CPAC Now. An excerpt of the interview was posted on Twitter by the Conservative Political Action conference.
“Susan Rice has been appointed as domestic policy adviser,” he said. “ That’s a joke. She doesn’t know anything about domestic policy.
“So, she’s a foreign policy expert that’s been placed in the domestic policy role. And that is just a clear signal that all of our international issues, our foreign policies, are going to be treated like domestic policy.
“This is a problem for the Democratic Party. The foreign policy mess that they are creating is a mess because they are placating the far-left domestically. It’s part of that cancel culture.
“They’re beating up on Israel because it pleases the far-left. They are trying to reach out to Iran and pretend like the Iranian regime should be respected because it pleases the far progressive left. This is the upsidedown world of the Biden administration. President (Joe) Biden is too weak to stop the progressive left from taking over the domestic and foreign policy. (Vice President) Kamala (Harris) does not understand what’s going on…
“And Susan Rice is really happy that Biden is so weak. We have a shadow president in Susan Rice and no one is paying attention.”
Rice is the former national security adviser for President Barack Obama. At one point she had emerged as a serious contender for consideration for Biden’s running mate in 2020.
Rice has faced criticism over her role in the failed Benghazi response that left four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador, dead.
She was also implicated in the unmasking of Americans in intelligence reports during the presidential transition. Some of those Americans turned out to be Donald Trump associates. Rice has denied any wrongdoing.
Grenell was interviewed for CPAC Now by Matt Schlapp, chairman of the American Conservative Union, and by Mercedes Schlapp, his wife and former White House director of strategic communications for the Trump administration, Fox News noted.
The White House did not immediately respond to an email from Fox News. Grenell had previously predicted Rice would assume the role as “shadow president.”
“We got a vice president who needs to spend most of her time in the Senate because it’s a 50-50 type. So Susan Rice is extremely excited that vice president Harris is preoccupied in the Senate and the shadow presidency of Susan Rice is front and center,” he said shortly after Biden was sworn in.

Dear Deans, Governing Boards and Trustees,
On behalf of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, I am writing to ask you to reconsider your new policy mandating COVID-19 vaccination of students prior to returning to campus. Institutions of higher learning are divided on this issue, although, at first glance, the policy may seem prudent, it coerces students into bearing unneeded and unknown risk and is at heart contrary to the bedrock medical principle of informed consent.
There are multiple reasons to reverse your policy. I ask you to consider the following:
Young adults are a healthy and immunologically competent and vibrant group that is at “extraordinary low risk for COVID-19 morbidity and mortality.”
College and University students, however, are under significant mental health strain already from COVID-19 fears, circumstances, distance learning problems and the imposition of government health policy restrictions.
Even though the FDA granted Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for three COVID-19 vaccines, they are not FDA approved to treat, cure or prevent any disease at this time. Clinical trials will continue for at least two years before the FDA can even consider approval of these vaccines as effective and safe.
The COVID-19 vaccines on the market in the U.S., mRNA (Moderna and Pfizer) and DNA (Johnson & Johnson – Janssen), have caused notable side effects, pathology and even death (4.178 deaths per VAERS as of May 5, 2021). These adverse reactions result in absence from school and work, hospital visits, and even loss of life.
College-age women may be at unique risk for adverse events following administration of the experimental COVID vaccinations currently available. According to the CDC, all cases of life-threatening blood clots, subsequent to receiving the J&J vaccine, reported so far in the United States, occurred in younger women. The vast majority of cases of anaphylaxis have also occurred in women. In addition, “women are reporting having irregular menstrual cycles after getting the coronavirus vaccine,” and 95 miscarriages have been reported to the U.S. Vaccine Adverse Effects Reporting System (VAERS) following COVID vaccination as of April 24, 2021.
Recent research data demonstrates that the spike protein, present on the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the induced primary mechanism of action of COVID-19 vaccines, are the primary cause of disease, infirmity, hospitalization and death.
Please reverse your decision to mandate experimental COVID-19 vaccines before more students are harmed and make the vaccines rightfully optional. Both unvaccinated and vaccinated students should be permitted on campus. Thank you for your time and attention. We would appreciate hearing back from you as soon as possible and welcome further discussion with you and other leaders at your institution.

US withdraws 120 military personnel from Israel as violence continues
The US has withdrawn approximately 120 military and civilian personnel from Israel, who were in the country to plan upcoming exercises, according to a report.
Citing a Department of Defence official, CNN Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr says that the group left on a C-17 aircraft to return to a base in Germany.
The continuing violence and lack of commercial air travel options were given as reasons to leave early on military transport.
This morning, the C-17 was recorded landing in Tel Aviv from Ramstein US Air Force Base in southwestern Germany.
Due to the escalation of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, many flights have been redirected from Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv to Ramon Airport, which is near the Red Sea resort Eilat.
The airport says it is operating after a brief halt when Hamas fired a rocket that missed the airfield but landed in the area.
United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and American Airlines have cancelled flights between the United States and Tel Aviv, according to data by flight tracker FlightAware.
As airstrikes continue on Gaza, and dozens of rockets are fired by Hamas militants back into Israel, the death toll is mounting, with seven dead in Israel and 87 killed in Gaza, including 18 children.
The Israeli military is reportedly set to approve plans for a possible ground invasion of Gaza, with additional troops, including infantry and armoured brigades, already in position on the border of the Palestinian territory.
