Japan to develop passenger spaceships in 2040s linking world's major cities in 2 hours

The Japanese government and private companies are gearing up to develop intercontinental passenger spaceships that could fly between the world's major cities in two hours or faster by utilizing rocket technology, Japan's science ministry has announced.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, which unveiled the plan on May 12, aims to achieve its goals by the early 2040s. It predicts the market for spaceships departing from and arriving in Japan could reach roughly 5 trillion yen (about $46 billion) in 2040. The ministry compiled an interim draft of its roadmap for future spaceship transportation, split into two phases, at a meeting of an expert panel on May 12.

In the first phase, the cost of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)'s next-generation H3 rocket will be halved from the 5 billion yen (about $46 million) or more spent on the H3 Launch Vehicle, JAXA's new rocket whose first flight is set for fiscal 2021, by reusing parts of the rocket body, among other measures. The roadmap aims to launch H3's successor rocket around 2030, and to further reduce the cost to about 10% in the early 2040s.

Next, by utilizing techniques such as reusing rocket parts, the private sector will lead development of transport vehicles that can go back and forth between the ground and space frequently. These are expected to be spaceships that passengers can board.

Two forms of spaceships are envisioned: one which can take off and land on runways like airplanes, and the other which can take off and land vertically like the Starship launch vehicle being developed by SpaceX in the United States. Prior to considering the roadmap, the science ministry estimated the market sizes of various space ventures. It concluded that demand for high-speed transport that connects major cities on the ground would be considerable, with services offering frequent launches forming the largest market.

Bookings for mass vaccination sites start Monday

Senior citizens in major cities in Japan can start making reservations for coronavirus inoculations at two mass vaccination sites on Monday. The central government will set up the facilities in Tokyo and Osaka. They will be staffed by Self-Defense Forces personnel to speed up the rollout.

In the first week, only those aged 65 or older, and who live in Tokyo's 23 wards and Osaka City, can make reservations. Eligibility will be expanded to all of Tokyo and Osaka Prefecture next week. In the third week, people can make reservations in Tokyo's three neighboring prefectures of Saitama, Chiba, and Kanagawa, as well as Osaka's neighbors of Kyoto and Hyogo. Reservations will be accepted online only, including the Defense Ministry's website, and on the messaging app, Line. But some concerns are being voiced over possible double-bookings and other problems, as the booking systems of the two venues, and those operated by local governments, are not connected.

Inoculations at the two venues will start on May 24. Officials expect SDF doctors and nurses to eventually administer daily shots of 10,000 in Tokyo, and 5,000 in Osaka. The government is aiming to achieve its goal of having all elderly people vaccinated by the end of July at the two mass vaccination sites, in addition to immunization efforts by local governments.

Statistics show that less than 5 percent of Japan's population have received at least one dose -- a far lower proportion than other G7 countries.
