Smart TV Makers Will Soon Make More Money Off Your Viewing Habits Than The TV Itself

"Smart" televisions have long been the poster child for the abysmal privacy and security standards inherent in the "internet of things" space. Such televisions have been routinely found to have the security and privacy standards of damp cardboard, making the data they collect delicious targets for hackers and intelligence agencies alike.

At the same time these companies have failed repeatedly to secure (or sometimes even encrypt) consumer data, their data collection revenue is positively exploding. Vizio, for example, recently noted that it made $38.4 million in one quarter just from tracking and monetizing consumer viewing and usage data. It made $48.2 million on hardware (both TVs, soundbars, and other products) in that same period, and that gap (if not already closed) is quickly closing:

"Its device business (the part that sells TVs, sound bars and the like) had a gross profit of $48.2 million in the same period, up from $32.5 million last year. While the hardware business has significantly more revenue, profits from data and advertising spiked 152 percent from last year, and are quickly catching up."

The problem researchers keep pointing out is not enough of that revenue is being put back into device security research and privacy standards, which is why Vizio, like most "smart" TV manufacturers, has been repeatedly caught in privacy scandals. Like that time it had to shell out $2.2 million to the FTC and NJ AG for failing to inform consumers this data was even being collected. By the time consumers got their share of that settlement, it wound up being about $20 per person. And it's not really clear anything would have happened at all if not for a 2015 ProPublica investigation into Vizio's lack of transparency.

The problem of course is that regulators, when they do bother to act, act half a decade after the fact, and only if a journalist exposes the problem first. Consumers then get a tiny pittance. And it shouldn't be too hard to understand how a $2.2 million fine for a company pulling down $38.4 million every three months off of consumer data alone probably isn't going to be an effective deterrent against future privacy abuses. It's viewed as just a light gnat on the nose and the cost of doing business.

Consumers do have a bit of control. They can disable a set's WiFi features entirely, even though in many instances doing so can disable core set functionality in obnoxious and unforeseen ways. Ideally I'd love to be able to buy a "dumb" TV that's just a great display with HDMI ports and no "smart" internals, but because consumer data is now so profitable, most TV vendors no longer even sell such an option.

It's also worth remembering that your smart TV is just one in a long line of systems collecting and monetizing your data, including the streaming hardware you're using (Roku, etc.), your ISP, any additional internet of things devices you've connected to your network, and even your energy company. While folks intent on downplaying modern privacy abuses often like to pretend this is the age of consumer empowerment, it's not really possible for consumers to "opt out" of data collection and monetization at the scale it's now occurring. Even with a lot of elbow grease, technical innovation, and external help.

Organizations like Consumer Reports have been pushing hard for improved efforts to warn consumers about potential privacy abuses at the point of sale, including them in product reviews and even on product packaging. And while their "open source" efforts on this front are really interesting, we're a long way away from this kind of transparency being the norm.

The use of fear to control behaviour in the Covid crisis was ‘totalitarian’, scientist group admits

Members of the Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Behaviour have expressed regret about ‘unethical’ methods used to control behaviour in Covid crisis and admitted they should be considered ‘totalitarian’.

Scientists on a committee that encouraged the use of fear to control people’s behaviour during the Covid pandemic have admitted its work was “unethical” and “totalitarian”.

Members of the Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Behaviour (SPI-B) expressed regret about the tactics in a new book about the role of psychology in the Government’s Covid-19 response.

The group warned in March last year that ministers needed to increase “the perceived level of personal threat” from Covid-19 because “a substantial number of people still do not feel sufficiently personally threatened”.

Gavin Morgan, a psychologist on the team, said: “Clearly, using fear as a means of control is not ethical. Using fear smacks of totalitarianism. It’s not an ethical stance for any modern government. By nature, I am an optimistic person, but all this has given me a more pessimistic view of people.”

The government has faced a barrage of criticism and been accused of ramping up the threat from the pandemic to justify lockdowns and coerce the public into abiding by them.

This claim is set to be examined by the forthcoming public inquiry into the pandemic response.

SPI-B is one of the sub-committees that advises the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), led by Sir Patrick Vallance, the chief scientific adviser.

One SPI-B scientist told Ms Dodsworth: “In March [2020] the Government was very worried about compliance and they thought people wouldn’t want to be locked down. There were discussions about fear being needed to encourage compliance, and decisions were made about how to ramp up the fear. The way we have used fear is dystopian.

“The use of fear has definitely been ethically questionable. It’s been like a weird experiment. Ultimately, it backfired because people became too scared.”

Another SPI-B member said: “You could call psychology ‘mind control’. That’s what we do… clearly we try and go about it in a positive way, but it has been used nefariously in the past.”

One warned that “people use the pandemic to grab power and drive through things that wouldn’t happen otherwise… We have to be very careful about the authoritarianism that is creeping in”.

Steve Baker, the deputy chairman of the Covid Recovery Group of Conservative MPs, said: “If it is true that the state took the decision to terrify the public to get compliance with rules, that raises extremely serious questions about the type of society we want to become.

“If we’re being really honest, do I fear that Government policy today is playing into the roots of totalitarianism? Yes, of course it is.”

OAN Newsroom

UPDATED 7:18 AM PT – Monday, May 17, 2021

A federal judge is sending out signals he may take Twitter to task over its designation as a “private entity” after the platform banned a Massachusetts Senate candidate. In a recent memorandum filed by Judge Mark Wolf, he laid out that Twitter may be considered a state actor if government officials have compelled it to do certain actions.

This all stems from a case in which Dr. V. A. Shiva, who ran in the Massachusetts 2020 Senate election, had his Twitter account suspended for casting doubt on the results of the presidential election. He later filed a lawsuit claiming his account was deleted at the behest of employees working under Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin.

“The government of Massachusetts contacted Twitter and I saw that in a story…they were talking about the fact that I was supposedly spreading election misinformation, that’s their opinion, by sharing the fact that they deleted ballot images,” stated Dr. Shiva.

This could spell trouble for the heavily criticized Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. The act shields social media companies from lawsuits regarding the content published on their platforms, effectively allowing them to silence any forms of speech they want.

Dr. Shiva said the links between Twitter and the government are apparent, claiming Twitter has built a special portal so that government officials can flag certain tweets they take issue with for any reason. He noted this lawsuit is about more than politics. It’s about protecting the sanctity of freedom of speech.

“Our lawsuit goes beyond left or right,” he stated. “It goes to the heart of what this country is suppose to be about: freedom of speech. That’s what this country was founded on.”

The court hearing is set for May 20.

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/editorials/states-are-wise-to-turn-down-bidens-poison-unemployment-money

States are wise to turn down Biden's poison unemployment money

It is quite rare to see a state turn down federal money. It is rarer still to see states turn it down in the name of improving their own economies.

Fortunately, several states are now doing just that. Why? Because President Joe Biden’s economic stimulus is making what’s rational for workers irrational for the economy as a whole.

At this point, the fact is unavoidable: The Biden administration’s foolish decision to extend increased unemployment benefits through the summer is clearly retarding the job market’s recovery. It made sense to pay out something to workers in exchange for government restrictions on their livelihood. But the long-term extension of extra-generous benefits has turned all the incentives on their head. For too many workers, the increased benefit makes it at least as profitable not to work as it is to work. And how can you blame anyone for not working if it actually costs them money?

Don’t blame the workers. Do blame the White House that chose to frame their choice for them so irrationally.

And indeed — how short-sighted it was in hindsight. It is still May, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has now rescinded guidelines recommending mask-wearing in most contexts. Yet, the Biden administration has saddled the nation with payments for not working that will last straight into September, even though the virus’s spread has been arrested. That’s three-and-a-half more months of needless, counterproductive payments that are actually preventing the restoration of the labor market to pre-coronavirus levels.

Biden himself is in complete denial about the problem. "You can't refuse [job offers] and just keep getting the unemployment benefits," he said. But everyone knows this is a toothless provision in the law. Those on unemployment benefits need only make a token effort at finding work in order to keep the Biden-bucks a-coming. And as long as they're being paid so well, why should they do anything more?

This is why some states, already having seen enough, are taking matters into their own hands and cutting off the expanded benefits, even though that means giving up federal money. Meanwhile, some of them are even offering bonuses to workers who leave unemployment and take a new job. This is a good idea because incentives matter. The labor forces in these states, once the Biden administration is no longer there to offer them perverse incentives, will get back on the job.

States control unemployment benefits. In this case, they are reasserting control in order to bring residents off the sidelines whom Biden has given reasons not to work. All other states would be wise to follow the example of Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Iowa, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Wyoming. These states have now all set an early end-date for the increased unemployment benefits, some as soon as next month.

Embattled California Governor Gavin Newsom Will Keep Mask Mandate in Place Until June 15, Because Science

Embattled California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) will keep his state’s mask mandate in place until June 15, because science.

Out of no where the CDC last Thursday announced fully vaccinated people will no longer be required to wear masks indoors.

CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said she’s just following the evolving science.

“We now have science that has really just evolved even in the last two weeks that demonstrates that these vaccines are safe, they are effective,” Walensky told Martha Raddatz.

Many Democrat governors caved following the CDC’s updated guidance on masks and lifted their state’s mask mandates.

But not California.

Newsom, who is facing a recall election for his disastrous lockdown policies and hypocrisy, is digging in his heels and keeping California’s mask mandate in place for another month.

Starting June 15, fully vaccinated people in California will not need to wear masks indoors or outdoors.

It is unclear how people will prove they are vaccinated, or if they will need to prove it.

Noted attorney Harmeet Dhillon said if anyone tries to make her show papers of her private health status in order to move about freely in public spaces, she will sue.

Arguments made:

We did not delete any files, Cyber Ninjas are incompetent and cant find the files because they do not knw what they are doing

Dominion only gave the password files to certified officials. We don't have the passwords

The number of ballots don't match what's on the slips because Cyber Ninjas don't know how to read our official documents

We will not provide the routers because they haven't told us what they need them for, there hasn't been a good reason.

So what the seals were broken and at the bottom of the bag, all of the boxes that the bags were in were sealed

After the bullshit arguments above were given, they proceeded to waste another 30 minutes talking about how phenomenal of a job they did with the election and claim the public was ready to move on.

Best Counteraccusations:

These outside contractors have been allowed to 'drift around' the coliseum, asking for crowd-sourced donations, using the event as a fundraiser.

You want to talk about chain of custody? There will be 6000 family members at the coliseum this weekend for graduation, all within walking distance of our ballots. Does that sound like chain of custody to you?

Ended it with this; 'We are not here to do the work of the auditors… We will not comply with any more requests from the audit. We don't work in this capacity. You turn a report over to us and we'll take a look at it.Anything illegal that is found you better be ready to argue it in a courtroom'
