President Joe Biden praised Michigan Democrat Rep. Rashida Tlaib during his latest trip to the Midwestern state this week, as the member of “the squad” demands divestment from Israel during conflict with Hamas.

 

“I want to say to you that I admire your intellect, I admire your passion, and I admire your concern for so many other people,” Biden said at a Ford plant in Dearborn. “You’re a fighter, and God thank you for being a fighter.”

On the same trip, Tlaib confronted Biden on the airport tarmac in Detroit and reportedly demanded the president condemn Israel and support the Palestinians. Biden’s approach as Israel faces its worst attacks in years from the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas has remained largely muted, with the president only saying he hopes the conflict comes to a quick end while professing the Jewish state’s right to self-defense.

 

On Wednesday, Biden told Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the White House expected “a significant de-escalation today” to reach a ceasefire.

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) continued to launch airstrikes against Hamas and other terrorist groups in Gaza late into Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning in response to Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad aggression.

 

The IDF’s “Guardian of the Walls” operation has intercepted about 90 percent of rockets being fired toward the Iron Dome in Israel. Terrorists in Palestine have launched more than 3,750 rockets, while about 500 have fallen in Gaza. The IDF confirmed its military operation has located and struck the homes of 12 senior Hamas commanders and struck command centers located in Gaza City, among other designated terroristic locations.

 

This marked the fifth round of airstrikes launched by Israel. Fifty-two fighter jets dropped more than 110 precision bombs in targets underground. The process was about 30 minutes.

According to the American Declaration of Independence, people enter into political society for the sake of protecting their inalienable rights, which are otherwise insecure. The question then arises: what can the people do if the government betrays its trust, and violates their rights? The Declaration’s initial answer is “that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government.”

 

The people create the government, but in so doing they do not forfeit their right to vindicate their own rights, even against the very government they created. Thus James Wilson asserted that the “vital principle” of America is “that the supreme or sovereign power of the society resides in the citizens at large; and that, therefore, they always retain the right of abolishing, altering, or amending their constitution.”

 

This right supersedes the claims of the government to the loyalty and obedience of its subjects. “Federalist No. 28” describes the right of revolution as “that original right of self-defence, which is paramount to all positive forms of government.”

 

This is, however, only the beginning of the story. The Declaration of Independence devotes more space to the right of revolution than to any other single concept. Equality and liberty are asserted, more or less without comment, but the right of revolution is explained in considerable detail, providing us with answers to a variety of critical questions about this “vital principle.”

 

By what right can the people supplant the authority of their own government? How can they justify the risks inherent in a course as drastic as revolution? What circumstances justify revolution?

Revolution and the Law of Nature

 

In October 1774, responding to the passage of the Intolerable Acts by the British Parliament and nearly two years before the Declaration of Independence, the First Continental Congress adopted a statement known as the Declaration and Resolves. In it, the delegates asserted that the rights of the colonists derived from three sources: “the immutable laws of nature, the principles of the English constitution, and the several charters or compacts.”

 

In the Declaration of Independence, however, the English constitution and the charters and compact of the colonies fall away, leaving only “the immutable laws of nature,” or, as the 1776 document puts it, “the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God.”

 

The shift is significant, as it illustrates the Founders’ core understanding of the foundations of the right of revolution. In 1774, the colonists were still attempting to work within the British system for redress of their grievances, and so they claimed the rights guaranteed to them as part of that system. They were seeking a political solution to a political dispute with Parliament.

 

By 1776, however, the colonists had become revolutionaries, claiming the right to establish themselves as an independent nation. In so doing they cast aside British law and appealed exclusively to a higher law: the natural law.

 

The natural law, as America’s Founding Fathers understood it, is simply that portion of the law of God that could be discerned through unassisted reason, without reference to any particular revelation. Alexander Hamilton noted that the natural law was “an eternal and immutable law, which is, indispensably, obligatory upon all mankind, prior to any institution whatever.”

Republican Mike Billand hopes to primary Rep. Dan Crenshaw in Texas’s Second Congressional District, and is honing in on what some people view as disappointing developments from Crenshaw, notably his support for anti-Second Amendment Red Flag Laws, and his inaction on the subject of Election Integrity in the days leading up to January 6.

 

“I’m just a local man from East Texas who actually cares about these issues. I’m sick of this political oligarchy which has grown in the DC swamp, and that’s what I decided to run,” Mike Billand told National File. Especially since Crenshaw got elected, Billand told National File he feels that his district has not been truly represented. “Crenshaw sees himself as living in DC. I’m a man of the people of East Texas.”

 

In particular, Billand cited Crenshaw’s claims to support election integrity, despite certifying what many believe to be fraudulent election results earlier this year. “What I ultimately hope with these audits is that turncoats like Crenshaw don’t successfully posture as the true defenders here. Their treachery cannot be forgiven.” By contrast, Billand says he “absolutely would have objected to the electoral certification” on January 6. He also attacked Crenshaw for his advocacy of Red Flag Laws. “Especially as a veteran, the group who is most impacted by red-flag laws, this is just disgusting to see,” said Billand. Crenshaw previously described opponents of Red Flag Laws as emotional and uninformed in a video he recorded in 2019.

 

Billand also says Crenshaw has done little to help fight the culture war, and promises to fight for Christian values. “We’ve lost some ground that we can’t get back, but let’s not cede any more,” he explained, specifically mentioning his opposition to child castration. Billand is critical of Crenshaw’s comparison of Jesus Christ to Superman, which many believe constitutes describing Christ as a fictional character. “Disgusting,” said Billand. “I believe America is a Christian nation and this sort of rhetoric is just gross.”

 

Billand is also calling for a four year immigration moratorium and believes the United States should have tailored caps on immigration from different countries, a merit based immigration system, and a complete wall on the southern border. Billand is also calling for a federal voter ID law, and says mail in voting should only be allowed in very limited circumstances, with serious hurdles to receiving your ballot by mail. However, Billand told National File he would like to see Election Day become a Federal Holiday, to better allow Americans to vote in person.

 

On the subject of COVID-19 lockdowns, Billand, many Republicans in his state, is opposed to the mask mandates and lockdowns. With a background in molecular biology, Billand told National File he believes lockdowns are unscientific and were recommended in bad faith, largely in an effort to stop President Donald Trump from winning last November.

 

Billand’s primary is next year. In the 2020 primary, Crenshaw ran unopposed, and received over 48,000 votes in the primary, and nearly 200,000 votes in the general election. Also running against Crenshaw is Lucia Rodriguez.

The World Economic Forum indicated Monday that it supports employees being forced to choose between taking one of the four controversial Covid vaccines, or unemployment if they choose to not take the vaccine. After intense backlash, they deleted the initial the tweet and uploaded another post with the same graphic and a tweaked caption.

 

“Get your COVID-19 jab – or you could face consequences from your employer #COVID19 #JobsReset21,” the original tweet posted on Monday read. The tweet was accompanied by a colorful graphic showcasing the purported poll numbers of companies that would fire employees for not taking the vaccine.

 

An article on the WEF website that was linked in the posts made various claims based on polling data such as, “Forty percent of companies surveyed in a new report require all employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19,” “Employees will be encouraged but not required to get a jab by 32% of companies,” and, “Mental health concerns and burn-out have risen up the agenda since the onset of the pandemic.”

They have begun to see the direct financial impact as energy companies take billions in climate-related write-downs on stranded assets and regulators focus on climate risk in the global financial system. They are also increasingly focused on the significant economic opportunity that the transition will create, as well as how to execute it in a just and fair manner. No issue ranks higher than climate change on our clients’ lists of priorities. They ask us about it nearly every day.

 

A Tectonic Shift Accelerates

 

In January of last year, I wrote that climate risk is investment risk. I said then that as markets started to price climate risk into the value of securities, it would spark a fundamental reallocation of capital. Then the pandemic took hold – and in March, the conventional wisdom was the crisis would divert attention from climate. But just the opposite took place, and the reallocation of capital accelerated even faster than I anticipated.

 

From January through November 2020, investors in mutual funds and ETFs invested $288 billion globally in sustainable assets, a 96% increase over the whole of 2019.1 I believe that this is the beginning of a long but rapidly accelerating transition – one that will unfold over many years and reshape asset prices of every type. We know that climate risk is investment risk. But we also believe the climate transition presents a historic investment opportunity.
