Blinken arrives in Egypt to shore up Gaza cease-fire efforts

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Egypt today as he pressed ahead with a diplomatic mission aimed at shoring up a cease-fire that ended an 11-day war between Israel and the Gaza Strip’s ruling Hamas militant group.

Blinken landed in Cairo a day after holding intensive talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders. In Egypt, he met with President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi and other top officials. Later he was to travel to Jordan to meet with King Abdullah II. Blinken has vowed to “rally international support” to rebuild the destruction in hard-hit Gaza while promising to make sure that no none of the aid reaches Hamas. He is instead trying to bolster Hamas’ rival, the internationally recognized Palestinian Authority. Blinken described Egypt and Jordan as central players in trying to bring calm to the region. Both countries are key U.S. allies that have peace agreements with Israel and frequently serve as mediators between Israel and the Palestinians.

Myanmar coup latest: Yangon to suffer 'more explosions,' say sources

Wednesday, May 26

8:00 p.m. Myanmar's National Unity Government, a parallel government set up by lawmakers elected in November's general election, has had to adopt a more realistic approach to the way companies like Norway's Telenor and the investment community conduct business. "The military has been using various means to threaten and extort money," Tu Hkawng, the NUG's environment and natural resources minister, tells Nikkei Asia in an interview from an undisclosed location. "Companies such as Telenor have no choice but to follow these instructions due to security concerns." Read the full article here.

4:00 p.m. Yangon, the largest city and commercial hub of Myanmar, will face more bomb attacks in the coming days and weeks, sources told Nikkei Asia. There were at least five incidents on Tuesday alone, with one at a wedding in Thingangyun Township where four people, including the bride, were reportedly killed by a bomb hidden in a present for the couple. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. Unconfirmed reports on social media suggest the couple or some of the wedding attendees were close to the junta. Sources told Nikkei that Yangon's administrative offices and schools, where security forces can be targeted, are likely to see more attacks. Fighting is also ongoing between the military and the People's Defence Force a resistance group against the junta in Kayah State bordering Thailand, after days of battle in Mindat, the city of Chin State by India.

Sasa outlines four goals for the unity government, beginning with the "total eradication of military dictatorship once and for all." He adds that the government is "inviting everyone to come together under that umbrella."

AAA says Memorial Day gas prices expected to hit highest in 7 years

Drivers hitting the road over the Memorial Day holiday weekend are expected to face the highest gas prices since 2014, according to AAA.

GasBuddy analyst Patrick DeHaan pointed out on Wednesday that demand for gas "has come roaring back," which he argued has pushed gas prices up to the highest levels in years. The head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy told "Mornings with Maria" that part of the reason why gas prices "are a bit higher than recent years" is because "oil production has not made a full recovery to pre-COVID levels." DeHaan then said that drivers should "expect that to continue," noting that "it’s going to be a blockbuster summer for demand." He stressed that the higher gas prices are a result "of the mismatch been supply and demand." AAA noted in a news release that the national average has "stabilized following the Colonial Pipeline cyberattack," but warned that gas prices will likely "fluctuate leading up to the holiday weekend." Gas prices reached a national average of $3.04 a gallon as of Wednesday, which is $1.07 higher than the same time one year ago, according to AAA.

AAA spokesperson Jeanette McGee said 37 million drivers are expected to travel by car or plane to celebrate the unofficial kick-off to summer, which she said is a 60% increase over last year’s holiday, signifying "a strong indication that summer travel is going to be largely popular." "I would estimate that the national average this summer would probably range between $2.25 to as much as $3.25 a gallon," DeHaan told host Maria Bartiromo on Wednesday. "There’s a lot of money flowing into the economy and it feels like we are running out of breathing room simply because demand is shooting up much faster than OPEC and U.S. oil producers are reacting," he added. DeHaan also pointed out that "the Biden administration obviously has been negotiating with Iran," which he noted could result in Iran’s crude oil making it "back to the global market." "That may help insulate prices from further rallying this summer," he explained, stressing that "that’s a wild card and for now motorists are stuck with the priciest seasonal gas prices since 2014."

In the AAA news release, McGee warned that "holiday road trippers may come across some gas stations with low fuel supply in popular travel destinations, like beaches, mountains or national parks" due to the Colonial Pipeline shutdown, which has since been fully restored. She did point out, however, that "markets are not expected to be fuel-less, like we saw in the wake of the pipeline shutdown."

Amazon looking at opening pharmacy stores in U.S.

Amazon Inc is considering the launch of brick-and-mortar pharmacies in the United States, Insider reported on Wednesday, triggering a drop in shares of drugstore chain operators CVS Health and Walgreens. The talks are mostly exploratory and any meaningful rollout of stores can take more than a year, according to the news site, citing people familiar with the matter. Insider also reported there were talks about putting the pharmacies inside of Amazon-owned Whole Foods locations.

An Amazon spokesperson said the company does not comment on rumor or speculation but added that Amazon Pharmacy is focused on making at-home delivery pharmacy easier and more convenient for customers. The e-commerce giant launched an online pharmacy in November for delivering prescription medications in the United States and stirring up competition with drug retailers such as Walgreens Boots Alliance, CVS Health and Walmart.

The move was built on its 2018 acquisition of PillPack, which Amazon said would remain separate and cater to customers who need pre-sorted doses of multiple drugs. The company’s potential move into the physical pharmacy space will pit it directly against established players.

Shares of Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid were all down between 3% and 5% on Wednesday.

CVS declined to comment on the report, while Walgreens and Rite Aid did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.

Shares of drug distributors McKesson Corp, Cardinal Health Inc and AmerisourceBergen Corp were also down about 1% each.

Multiple Dead in Mass Shooting at San Jose Rail Yard

The shooter is also dead, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office said.

Multiple victims are dead after a mass shooting early Wednesday at a Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) light rail yard in San Jose, California, according to sources cited by the San Jose Mercury News.

The alleged shooter is also dead, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office said. The gunfire reportedly erupted shortly after 6:30 a.m. PT.

VTA spokeswoman Brandi Childress told The Daily Beast that the shooting occurred at the Guadalupe light rail maintenance yard, and resulted in “multiple casualties” but “the extent of the injuries is still being determined.”

“All employees were evacuated. The sheriff’s office which is just down the street from the location is the reunification center for employees and family members who may be looking for them,” she added. San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said in a tweet that “several” people are being treated for injuries, but that the facility has been evacuated and the shooter “is no longer a threat.”

The circumstances of the shooting remain unclear, but the mother of a VTA employee reportedly contacted KTVU to say her son called to say he was sheltering in the auditorium of the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, and that the shooting occurred during a union meeting.

The violence comes amid a spate of gun violence across the nation, including a “targeted attack” at a New Jersey birthday party last weekend that killed three.

This Is What Jamie Dimon Will Tell the U.S. Senate Today (With Annotated Text)

Below are selected remarks from Jamie Dimon’s prepared statement for the Senate Banking Committee hearing today, which will take testimony from a total of six Wall Street bank CEOs. Wall Street On Parade’s annotated remarks appear in brackets and italics.

“Chairman Brown, Ranking Member Toomey and distinguished members of the Committee, I appreciate the invitation to appear before you to talk about JPMorgan Chase, the strength and resilience of the U.S. financial system, and the people, businesses and communities we serve.”

[The strength of the U.S. financial system would, of course, be a lot safer and sounder if the largest bank in the U.S., at which Dimon serves as Chairman and CEO, had not been charged with five felony counts since 2014, all occurring under his leadership. The bank admitted to all five counts.]

“JPMorgan Chase is a global financial services firm with assets of $3.4 trillion and operations worldwide. We are a leader in investment banking, financial services for consumers and small businesses, commercial banking, financial transaction processing, and asset management.”

[As for exactly how JPMorgan Chase interacts with consumers, see its rap sheet. JPMorgan Chase also has the distinction of being the riskiest bank in the U.S.]

“Banks play an essential role in a community, with the potential of bringing people together, enabling companies and individuals to reach their dreams, and being a source of strength in difficult times.”

[Actually, rather than being a source of strength in difficult times, the mega banks on Wall Street required $29 trillion in bailouts from the Fed from 2007 to the middle of 2010 to keep the entire U.S. financial system from collapsing.]

“We are living through extraordinary times, for which history will judge the leaders of government and industry by the actions we take to address the health crisis, support the people and businesses suffering from the devastating economic impacts of the pandemic, and address longstanding structural inequities and racial economic inequality.”

[On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic. Jamie Dimon’s compensation to oversee the bank in 2020, which included admitting to two new felony counts on September 29, 2020, was set at $31.5 million by his Board of Directors. One of those 2020 felony counts related to rigging the U.S. Treasury market, the market that makes it possible for the U.S. government to pay its bills and help struggling Americans during a national health crisis.]

“We were proud to have participated in various Federal Reserve emergency programs, such as the Paycheck Protection Program, Primary Dealer Credit Facility, Commercial Paper Funding Facility, Money Market Mutual Fund Liquidity Facility and the Secondary Market Corporate Credit Facility, among others.”

[The Paycheck Protection Program was created to help main street businesses. The Primary Dealer Credit Facility, the Commercial Paper Funding Facility, and the Money Market Mutual Fund Liquidity Facility were created to bail out the Wall Street banks. The American people still have not received a report on just which Wall Street banks received bailouts under those three programs. In addition, the Fed pumped more than $6 trillion into Wall Street banks in repo loans from September 17, 2019 to January, 2020 – before any pandemic had been declared. The public has yet to see a breakdown of which banks got that bailout money.]

“We have an equitable and well-governed approach to compensation…”
