Despite Initial Claims Drop, Almost 16 Million Americans Remain On Government Dole
Initial Jobless Claims tumbled (positively) to their lowest since the pandemic lockdowns began, adding just 406k Americans last week (well below the 425k expected). This is still double the pre-pandemic norms...And despite the ongoing trend of improvement, there are still just under 16 million Americans on some form of government dole...Bear in mind that while Congress extended Pandemic Emergency unemployment benefits through September 6th, at least 21 states cancelled the benefits.. At least 21 states are going to end the emergency unemployment benefits before the September 6th deadline.
The map shows many of the end dates.
3.5 million people will come off benefits in the next couple months.

HSBC reaches deals to sell most US branches
HSBC Holdings on Thursday announced its exit from U.S. retail banking, pulling the plug on years of underperformance, to focus on its profitable operations in Asia.
The London-headquartered bank, which has one of the largest U.S. businesses of any non-American bank, said it had reached agreements to sell 90 branches, would convert up to 25 others to serve wealthy international clients and would close as many as 40 others. The lender said it expects to incur a pretax cost of $100 million from its U.S. exit. "They are good businesses, but we lacked the scale to compete," Chief Executive Noel Quinn said in a statement. "This next chapter of HSBC's presence in the U.S. will see the team focus on our competitive strengths, connecting our global wholesale and wealth management clients to other markets around the world."
The bank said it will sell 80 Eastern Seaboard branches that serve 800,000 customers and have $9.2 billion in deposits and $2.2 billion in loans to Citizens Financial Group of Providence, Rhode Island. HSBC's West Coast domestic mass-market and retail operations, including 10 branches that hold $1 billion in deposits and $800 million in loans, will be offloaded to Los Angeles-based Cathay Bank. HSBC did not disclose the terms of the deals, which are expected to conclude by next March. The exit from U.S. retail banking draws a line on HSBC's four-decade effort to run a universal bank in the world's largest economy. The push into the U.S. included the disastrous acquisition of subprime lender Household International in 2003, which eventually led to tens of billions of dollars in write-downs for bad loans.
The bank shut much of its U.S. consumer finance business in 2009. It then sold half its branch network and credit card business in the country in 2011 and closed 80 more branches last year. Over the past decade, senior management and the bank's board have attempted to boost profits across its U.S. retail banking business in vain without the high-margin card business. Low interest rates since the global financial crisis, and increasing employee and regulatory costs, have crimped margins further. HSBC is the latest global bank to withdraw from a major regional retail market as poor margins force a rethink of trying to be the bank for everyone. Citigroup last month said it will exit most of its Asian retail business after more than a century.
HSBC has also flagged intentions to exit its French retail operations. As part of the latest overhaul of the bank, which has 226,000 employees and operations in 60 markets, HSBC plans to cut $100 billion of risk-weighted assets to free up capital and up to 35,000 employees. It is also relocating the heads of all its main revenue-generating divisions to Hong Kong from London.

Biden, First Lady visiting Joint Base Langley-Eustis on Friday
Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden will go to Hampton on Friday to visit Joint Base Langley-Eustis, the White House said Tuesday. Their visit will coincide with the start of Memorial Day Weekend. The White House didnโt release any more information about when and where they will travel. It will be their second visit to Hampton Roads this month. The two visited Yorktown and Portsmouth on May 3 to tout a $1.8-trillion proposal that includes free universal pre-K and community college. The White House did not specify which of the two posts that are part of the joint base that Biden will visit. However, Langley Air Force Base has been a common spot for presidential visits to the Peninsula. Former President Barack Obama made several stops at Langley as president. Former first lady Melania Trump and Vice President Mike Pence also visited the base.

Janet Yellen says the Treasury needs more funds to oversee the economic recovery.
Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen warned on Thursday that her agency lacked sufficient resources to oversee an economic recovery that still has โa long road aheadโ and called on Congress to provide her with more funds to oversee a sprawling set of relief programs.
In testimony before a House appropriations subcommittee, Ms. Yellen expressed confidence that the end of the pandemic recession was in sight, but said that the Treasury Department is facing an overwhelming task in disbursing hundreds of billions of dollars of relief money with the same budget that it had a decade ago. The Treasury Department has been central to the federal governmentโs response to the health crisis, funneling stimulus payments and aid to millions of Americans, states, cities and businesses.
โOur team has done valiant work implementing these programs with the resources at our disposal,โ Ms. Yellen said in prepared remarks. โBut we cannot continue to be good stewards of this recovery โ and tackle the new bodies of work that Congress assigns to us in the years beyond โ with a budget that was designed for 2010.โ
The call for more funding comes as the Biden administration will formally propose a $6 trillion budget on Friday.
Ms. Yellen said that Treasuryโs Domestic Finance, Economic Policy, and Tax Policy offices have all seen their budgets cut by about 20 percent since 2016, during the Trump administration. She noted that the Internal Revenue Service, which has seen its budget gutted in the last decade, has been responsible for making approximately $800 billion in stimulus payments in the last year and is now getting ready to start making monthly payments of the expanded child tax credit.
