Remember Donald Trump-touted hydroxychloroquine? Study in India backs it as Covid-19 cure

Hydroxychloroquine, the malaria drug touted as a magical Covid-19 cure by former US President Donald Trump last year, has been found effective in a prophylactic study published in the Journal of The Association of Physicians of India (JAPI) last week.

The study showed that hydroxychloroquine, popularly known as HCQ, could prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection in varying degrees depending on its dosing regimen. The highest prevention rate of 72 per cent was found among those given hydroxychloroquine over six weeks or a longer duration.

The study said, “[W]hen adjusted for other risk factors, HCQ dose as per government recommendations, 2-3, 4-5, 6 or more weeks reduced the probability of Covid positivity by 34 per cent, 48 per cent and 72 per cent.”

The study was conducted May-September last year when HCQ was still part of the Union health ministry’s recommendation in treatment protocol for Covid-19. The study began against the backdrop of contesting claims made by authorities and experts including Donald Trump and his advisor Dr Anthony Fauci, the US’s top infectious disease expert.

In March 2020, Donald Trump declared that hydroxichloroquine was a “game changer” drug in the fight against Covid-19. Dr Fauci dismissed the claim citing lack of study and evidence. Despite Fauci’s counter-positioning, Trump continued to be vocal about taking HCQ as prophylactic drug. Incidentally, the Union health ministry on June 6 dropped hydroxychloroquine from Covid-19 treatment protocol. In its nine-page guidelines released on Sunday (June 6) by the directorate of health services, hydroxychloroquine, ivermectin and favipiravir find no mention.

The government’s decision came on the back of criticism by experts who pointed out a lack of study-based evidence to recommend hydroxychloroquine in Covid-19 cases. The government’s revised guidelines, however, contradicts the recommendations made by the Indian Council of Medical Research as released on May 17.

The ICMR guidelines prescribed the use of hydroxychloroquine in mild cases of Covid-19.

Bitcoin weekly outflows hit record high -CoinShares data

Bitcoin funds and products posted record outflows last week as investors continued to cast a cautious eye on the world’s largest cryptocurrency, which has seen its upward momentum stall in the last few months, according to digital currency manager CoinShares data released on Monday. Bitcoin outflows hit $141 million in the week ending June 4, representing 8.3% of the net inflows seen this year. For the year so far, bitcoin still showed net inflows of $4.2 billion. The cryptocurrency sector overall suffered outflows of $94.2 million last week, the data showed.

James Butterfill, investment strategist at CoinShares, believes that despite the outflows last week, there seems to be “an early turn in sentiment since May, where most product providers were seeing net outflows and sentiment was broadly negative.” Bitcoin was last down 0.6% at $35,591. For the month of May, bitcoin dropped 35.4%. So far in June, bitcoin was down a modest 4.8%. That said, ether, the token used for the Ethereum blockchain, continued to see inflows, with $33 million this week. So far this year, inflows into ether products and funds totaled $1 billion. XRP saw total inflows of $7 million, the largest since April, while both Cardano and multi-asset products posted inflows of $4.5 million and $2.7 million respectively.

Digital asset product weekly trading volume on bitcoin has fallen 62% compared with last month, CoinShares data showed. Blockchain data provider Glassnode also affirmed bitcoin’s slowdown. “The growth in on-chain demand has slowed markedly, with a number of on-chain metrics showing significant pull-backs,” Glassnode said. During the recent sell-off, the bitcoin network experienced a reduction in active addresses, down 18% from the recent highs to around 940,000, Glassnode said. This fall though was roughly half the reduction seen in 2017, suggesting that while activity has slowed, more demand exists than after the previous cycle’s macro top. Data also showed that Grayscale remains the largest digital currency manager at $30.3 billion, but that was down from $33.6 billion, the previous week.

CoinShares, the second-biggest and largest European digital asset manager, oversaw nearly $4 billion on assets, little changed from last week.

China military flybys near Taiwan plunge after US-Japan statement

Chinese military activity near Taiwan airspace has dropped sharply since the U.S. and Japanese leaders called for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait during their April 16 summit, data compiled by Nikkei shows.

Beijing appears to be backing off from aggressive moves that would antagonize Washington over the hot-button issue after the U.S. and Japan made their first statement naming Taiwan in decades. With China celebrating the Communist Party's 100th anniversary on July 1, the country has also prioritized ensuring domestic order. China had sent military jets into Taiwan's air defense identification zone on 75 days between Jan. 1 and April 16, for a rate of about 70% or roughly five days weekly. A total of 257 jets, mainly J-10 and J-16 fighters, flew into Taiwan's ADIZ during these incursions, for an average of 3.4 aircraft per day of incident. Taiwan experienced large-scale incursions of 10 or more Chinese jets on nine of those days, six of which happened within three weeks of the U.S.-Japan statement.

China tends to increase flybys around Taiwan whenever Washington signals greater involvement with the island. A record 25 aircraft flew into the island's ADIZ on April 12, four days before the statement, amid growing speculation that U.S. President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga would refer explicitly to Taiwan. China's posturing on April 12 also came one day after U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken's warning that "it would be a serious mistake for anyone to try to change that status quo [on Taiwan] by force." Beijing's activities near Taiwan diminished after the summit, both in scale and frequency. Su Tzu-yun, from Taiwan's Institute of National Defense and Security Research, said the Biden-Suga statement had a clear impact.

Since April 16, an average of 1.9 Chinese jets has entered Taiwan's ADIZ per day of incursion. No incidents involving 10 or more aircraft have been reported. Incursions have occurred in just seven of the past 14 days, with two aircraft involved on only one occasion. The other six days involved one plane each -- including on June 4, when Blinken criticized China on the 32nd anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown. China wants to avoid antagonizing the U.S. over Taiwan, while demonstrating Beijing's military might to those at home ahead of the Communist Party centennial, Su said, noting the recent uptick in provocations against Southeast Asian nations. Sixteen Chinese military jets approached Malaysian territory on the island of Borneo on May 31. They shifted course once Malaysia scrambled its own aircraft in response.

Over 220 Chinese vessels have been moored by a reef in the Spratly Islands, which both China and the Philippines claim as their own, since March. The Philippines has slammed the presence of the ships in what the archipelago considers its exclusive economic zone.
