Here is where I was actaully thinking "food for thought"...
wtf is actually wrong with the gig/spotwork/temp economy?
Why not MAKE IT WORK instead of villifying it?
Yes I know the tech giants use "temp work" and "gig work" as a way to cut pay and benefits.
But... first off... why are benefits even a thing?
(Yes I know there is a historical answer going back to WW2...)
But why shouldn't you just GET PAID... and then choose how to spent your money?
Why are workers conceptualized as serfs who get "benefits" from their lords?
Isn't the "capitalist" idea that pay is a free exchange for work?
NOT an institutionalization of servility?
In CURRENT REALITY... EMPLOYMENT is SERVITUDE since you are surrendering your public voice to your "employer".
Even if we restore online free speech, private employment contracts could eliminate it for most.
You gotta deal with multiple issues to get this right, yeah.
MANUAL spot work is dominated by illegals... so you gotta solve that problem.
But why shouldn't American men regard it as a point of honor that they have experience showing up and doing random manual work?
Fuck Ricardo!
Ever watch the Wire? Great show, but the black ex con tries to get his life right by "working"... but doesn't fit in with all the illegal workers...
I don't see anyone wrong with even the most intellectual types showing up for some manual work in their 50's and 60's.
If they don't get paid top wage, so what?
But then you've also got to make it worthwhile to do "pink collar" work gig-style and rando more techie and mental stuff.
I've DONE all these things in SOME way at times and I've benefitted.
It strikes me this is a totally different issue from how to direct people to make the most of their lives.
Many people will happily do their REAL WORK for free if it brings honor and respect (if they are not in a desparate struggle to merely survive...).
