Japan’s Nikkei 225 Slides 3% on Concern Over Interest Rates-US 30Y Treasury Yield below 2.00

Japanese stocks fell by the most in over a month, extending losses from late last week following hawkish comments from the Federal Reserve. Uniqlo operator Fast Retailing Co. and SoftBank Group Corp., two of the most heavily weighted stocks on the Nikkei 225, were the largest contributors to the loss in the index, which slid as much as 3% in its fourth day of declines.

Electronics and chemicals makers were the biggest drags on the broader Topix, which was down 2.3% as of 9:50 a.m., with all but one industry group in the red. The S&P 500 index and commodities dropped Friday on the prospect of less accommodative U.S. monetary policy. Inflation risks may warrant the start of interest rate hikes next year, St. Louis Fed President James Bullard said in an interview on CNBC. “Given the Japanese markets had been lacking a domestic catalyst and been hostage to global markets, it’s no surprise to see investors taking profits or cutting losses,” said Takeo Kamai, head of execution services at CLSA Securities Japan Co. “However, given the Nikkei was still at a multi-year high and valuations weren’t necessarily cheap, this correction may be healthy.”

Short-dated Treasury yields are extending their rise from Friday's bloodbath as the collapse of the long-end of the term structure accelerates in early Asia trading. 2Y is back above the Fed Funds rate...and 30Y yields are back below 2.00%-Cap#2 for the first time since March. 10Y yields are at their lowest since early March..Japanese equity markets are none too happy with Powell's policy error malarkey-Cap#3

Russian envoy returns to US after Putin-Biden summit

The ambassador was recalled after US President Joe Biden branded Russian counterpart Putin "a killer" during an interview.

The Russian ambassador arrived back in the United States on Sunday, three months after being recalled amid a diplomatic row between the two countries. The plane transporting ambassador Anatoly Antonov took off at 9:20 a.m. (0620 UTC/GMT) from Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport for New York, where he will travel on to Washington, Russian news agencies reported. Russia in March took the rare step of recalling Antonov from Washington after US President Joe Biden branded his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, "a killer" during an interview. At the same time, Russia said US envoy to Moscow John Sullivan should return to Washington.

But during a bilateral summit last week in Geneva, Putin and Biden agreed that both diplomats should return to their posts. A date for Sullivan's return to Moscow has not yet been announced.

Coronavirus latest: Japanese companies kick off workplace vaccinations

Monday, June 21 (Tokyo time)

10:30 a.m. China reports 17 new cases for Sunday, down from 23 a day earlier. Of the new cases, one was a local infection in southern Guangdong province, while the rest were imported cases. The number of new asymptomatic infections fell to 19 from 20 a day earlier. China does not classify them as confirmed cases.

9:34 a.m. Japan's benchmark Nikkei Stock average fell over 800 points, or 3%, during early morning trade on Monday. The drop follows remarks on Friday from James Bullard, president of the St. Louis Federal Reserve, suggesting that an initial rate hike could happen in late 2022.

7:00 a.m. Big Japanese companies and universities kick off workplace vaccinations as the government hopes to speed up the country's slow inoculation ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, scheduled to start on July 23. The total number of people to be vaccinated at their workplace should exceed 13.7 million. Japan downgraded the state of emergency in Tokyo and eight other prefectures on Monday as infections have slowed down.

4:00 a.m. The Philippines has signed a supply agreement for 40 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, its biggest coronavirus vaccine deal to date. Deliveries of the vaccine will begin in late September, said Carlito Galvez, head of the government's COVID-19 vaccine procurement.
