Citi to sell Venezuela operations to BNC

Citigroup Inc said on Monday it would sell its operations in Venezuela to Banco Nacional de Crédito (BNC), but did not disclose the terms of the deal.

The sale to the Venezuelan bank, which has received regulatory approval, is expected to close in the next few weeks, Citi said. "Citi is committed to Latin America and will maintain a strong presence in the region," Citi Latin America Chief Executive Ernesto Torres Cantú said. The company, which started its Venezuela operations more than a century ago, currently has fewer than 100 employees in the country, and they will be given the opportunity of staying on with BNC, Bloomberg had earlier reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

Suu Kyi faces 4 new corruption cases: lawyers

Myanmar's ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been newly charged with four new cases of corruption, a member of her team of lawyers said Monday.

Lawyer Min Min Soe said the four new cases have been brought against Suu Kyi at a court in the central city of Mandalay, the country's second-largest city, which has set July 22 as the date to discuss the case.

Suu Kyi, who was detained following the Feb. 1 military coup, already faced a number of other charges, including violating the Official Secrets Act, illegally importing walkie-talkies, spreading information that fanned social unease and breaching COVID-19 restrictions. She also stands accused of illegally accepting $600,000 and gold as well as misusing her authority in renting land and a building. Most of the cases against her are being dealt with by a court in the capital Naypyitaw. It appears that Myanmar's military is aiming again to detain Suu Kyi for a prolonged period. She spent more than 15 years under house arrest during the previous era of military rule.

Meanwhile, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, a rights group tracking the situation in Myanmar, reported Monday that the number of people killed by security forces has reached at least 902, up from around 890 last week.
