In summer 2014, Microsoft founder Bill Gates met a group of Chinese tech startups during a trip to Beijing and one company, in particular, caught his eye. He remarked the new startup as “very cool” after being given a product demonstration tour.
That company was DeepGlint, an artificial intelligence (AI) computer vision startup, which claimed to study the structure of the human eye to provide 3D image analysis and pattern recognition technologies. Its products included smart sensors, recognition systems, and cloud computing.
DeepGlint has been hailed by many as an AI pioneer since its establishment in April 2013. Founder Zhao Yong, a PhD from Brown University in the U.S., was one of the seven designers who took part in the augmented-reality eyewear Google Glass project. The company’s CEO, He Bofei, attended Stanford and had served as a senior executive at several big-name firms, such as Procter & Gamble and Beijing Hualian Group.
In 2014, DeepGlint generated a further buzz with a recruitment post that boasted its lineup of talented employees. “Our people are made up of graduates from Princeton, Stanford, Harvard, MIT, Peking University and Tsinghua University. Our engineers’ background is even more stellar, from companies such as Google, Nvidia, Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent,” said the post.
Fast forward to 2019, DeepGlint is now a long way from its past glory and struggles to keep pace with its Chinese rivals. The company is currently valued at USD 540 million, Zhao told 36kr in a recent interview, a lower value when compared with its four main competitors — SenseTime, Megvii, Yitu, and CloudWalk — all of which reportedly have a valuation of above USD 2 billion.
The downfall of DeepGlint came as a surprise for observers, as just five years ago the company was riding high on a wave of national interest in the development of AI, and had investments from the likes of Sequoia Capital, ZhenFund and Ceyuan Ventures.
The AI hunger
With a 1.4 billion-strong population, China provides an ideal testbed and a pipeline for data-hungry AI algorithms. Companies like SenseTime quickly placed its AI technology and applications in smart cities, video analysis, and auto driving, while other firms such as Megvii developed facial recognition tech used in public security and mobile payment.
From 2010 to May 2017, China’s AI sector reported 2,218 cases of fundraising totaling RMB 66.8 billion (USD 9.5 billion), according to research firm Zero2IPO. In 2015 alone, the sector hit a record of 719 fundraising cases, a surge of 156% year-on-year.

Last Wednesday, former President Trump filed a class action lawsuit against Twitter, Facebook, and Google pursuant to their partisan censorship of viewpoints that conflict with those of their CEOs and employees. The next day, Trump took to the Wall Street Journal, where he succinctly summed up his most compelling argument for suing: “If they can do it to me, they can do it to you.” Ironically, this echoes what Bernie Sanders told the New York Times last March: “[Y]esterday it was Donald Trump who was banned, and tomorrow, it could be somebody else.” If Trump and Sanders take the same position on Big Tech censorship, the issue deserves serious attention.
Yet the Democrats and the media have summarily dismissed the class action lawsuit as a publicity stunt while insisting that “private companies” aren’t bound by the First Amendment. But it isn’t that simple. UCLA law professor Eugene Volokh writes, “Historically, American law has divided operators of communications systems into three categories — publishers, distributors, and conduits — and has set up different standards of liability for each.” Social media platforms fall into the “conduit” category. They are analogous to common carriers like telephone companies or places of public accommodation like city parks, neither of which may exclude individuals based on their political views. Volokh continues,
I think Congress could categorically treat platforms as common carriers, at least as to their hosting function. But Congress could also constitutionally give platforms two options: (1) Be common carriers like phone companies, immune from liability but also required to host all viewpoints, or (2) be distributors like bookstores, free to pick and choose what to host but subject to liability (at least on a notice-and-takedown basis).
Volokh is by no means the only legal luminary to suggest that social media platforms are analogous to common carriers and consequently subject to regulation by Congress or state legislatures. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas created a considerable amount of hysteria on the left last April when he pointed out in his concurring opinion in Biden v. Knight that, like Twitter, Facebook, and Google, trains and communication networks are privately owned yet the law obligates them to serve everyone. Justice Thomas went on to note that Congress has granted social media platforms immunity from certain types of lawsuits but that it “has not imposed corresponding responsibilities, like nondiscrimination.”
This brings us to the special dispensation that social media platforms enjoy under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (CDA). Section 230 says, “No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider.” Upon learning of the class action lawsuit, the Left robotically invoked this obsolete 1996 legislation as if it constitutes a sacrosanct and immutable decree that permanently precludes Trump or anyone else from holding Big Tech accountable for its violations of the First Amendment. But as Joel Thayer points out in Newsweek, what Congress can give, Congress can take away:
Congress can write a new public accommodation law to prevent internet platforms from discriminating against users who express a certain political viewpoint.… One avenue it can take is applying public accommodation laws that bar platforms from discriminating against users because of their political views. Such measures are not only in line with the animating spirit of Section 230, but they affirmatively advance it.

Evidence in a bizarre case of a Canadian soldier accused of drugging comrades with marijuana-laced cupcakes was lost by military police, says the soldier's lawyer — who accuses the Department of National Defence of conducting a sloppy, incompetent investigation.
Bombardier Chelsea Cogswell's military trial is slated to start next month. It's believed to be the first of its kind.
She faces 18 charges, including administering a noxious substance to eight soldiers without their consent in July 2018 at CFB Gagetown. At the time, the soldiers were taking part in a live-fire exercise involving explosives and weapons drills.
CBC News has obtained a copy of a court application filed by Cogswell's lawyer Ian Kasper. In it, Kasper argues the military should throw out evidence of traces of THC — the main psychoactive compound in cannabis — gathered from one cupcake wrapper because the other cupcake wrappers were lost and never tested.
"The chain of command and the military police did not preserve all the wrappers for further investigation," Kasper wrote in the application. "The loss of such important evidence was the result of incompetence.
"The chain of command's loss of the cupcake wrappers was so shockingly negligent as to constitute an abuse of process."
The military is in the midst of an institutional crisis over its handling of misconduct in the ranks. Critics have said military police are ill-equipped to investigate offences.

since wednesday 7/21 notables contain FOURTEEN (14) posts (count 'em) related to the NSO/Pegasus spyware story. funny, because THREE DAYS EARLIER on 7/18, i found leads to the same story on the EWillHelpYou telegram account (https://t.me/s/TheOfficialE) along with suggested diggs, but when i posted what i found on QR, the "BV" and a small handful of his sycophant shills berated and belittled me, and disparaged the posts while proudly declaring they hadn't even bothered to read them. when i defended myself and my post then questioned the BV's ulterior motives, i was banned for life with no appeal, and all the posts were scrubbed from the QR board.
and i am not the first. i've watched as other true anons got banned, one after another, for similar frivolous reasons in the preceding weeks by this same power-drunk petty tyrant BV. he/she is either a petulant child unfit for the position of BV, or a clown shill sent here to corrupt and subvert this board and drive away patriots or outright ban them if they don't leave out of disgust.
this is, after all, a FREE SPEECH BOARD, and banning anons simply because they espouse opinions that differ from BV's is NOT ACCEPTABLE.what will it takeuntil this POS is removed from the position of authority entrusted to them, banned for life, and taken out behind the woodshed, and taught a lesson by patriots? and at the same time, all real patriots banned by this glowing clown need to have have their IPs un-banned.
