Natto extract blocks coronavirus infection in lab tests; efficacy in food form unknown

An enzyme found in natto, a Japanese food made from fermented soybeans known for its strong smell, hinders infection with the coronavirus, researchers in Japan have found.

Researchers from Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology and other institutions, who made the discovery, say it is extremely rare to directly confirm that food constituents have antiviral properties. It remains unclear, however, whether eating natto can prevent infections, as the experiment was conducted with cultured cells. Infection with the coronavirus occurs when spike proteins on the surface of the virus become attached to certain receptors on parts of human cell walls known as angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptors. Meanwhile, natto bacteria, which is used to ferment soybeans, is said to improve the intestinal environment and boost immune strength.

The researchers focused on an enzyme secreted by natto bacteria that breaks down proteins. The team combined the coronavirus strain that first spread in China with a natto extract in a test tube and applied this to cultured cells to examine whether the treated virus infected the cells. They found that the extract constituents broke down the spike proteins on the virus's surface, and because of this, the cultured cells did not become infected. However, the protein-degrading enzyme is inactivated when heated, and when researchers heated the mixture to a certain temperature, it was no longer possible to prevent infection. Researchers therefore concluded that one or more enzymes, or protease, had destroyed the surface of the virus, and prevented the cells' infection. Similar results were confirmed with the allegedly more transmissible N501Y variant of the coronavirus first reported in the United Kingdom. Researchers also discovered that the natto extract prevented infection of the cells with bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1), which can cause respiratory tract disorders in cattle. Research team member Tetsuya Mizutani, of the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, commented, "Further verification is needed to determine whether it could be a method to prevent an increase in the number of infected people if there are antiviral properties in the food product."

The results of the study were published online on July 13 in the international academic journal Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications.

SpaceX Lands $178 Million NASA Contract for Jupiter Moon Mission

NASA selected Elon Muskโ€™s SpaceXโ€™s Falcon Heavy rocket to launch its scientific probe of the Jupiter moon Europa, which has liquid oceans that could harbor life.

The contract for the Europa Clipper mission, scheduled to launch in October 2024, is worth $178 million, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration said Friday in a statement. The moon is approximately 390 million miles (630 million kilometers) from Earth, with the journey expected to take more than five years.

Europa is among NASAโ€™s top scientific efforts, given the enormous amount of saltwater that lies below its icy surface. The Europa Clipper spacecraft will produce high-resolution images of the surface, determine the moonโ€™s composition and scan for geologic activity, NASA said. It will hunt for subsurface lakes, measure the moonโ€™s shell, and determine the depth and salinity of the ocean.

That certainly could be possible but likely most of those are not visible-you wouldn't want to advertise and sure you already know that.

I don't watch MW so can't speak to it in much detail (not trying to imply I am the authority at all so I want to make that clear).

MW had some sorta mea culpa earlier this year about the AF1 and AF2 calls signs and AC usage..sent out an email or some shit like that to the 'followers' and that is about the last I saw it.

Would think a lot of that habbens after I go to bed like the Grand Coulee Dam one from last night..was in general not here

The last example I habs of what that refers to as Spy Plane is this below and is a test platform for 645th Aerospace Systems Groupโ€“more commonly known by its nickname Big Safari and is also based out of Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton

DAGGR55 Dornier 328 from Bragg to Bentonville, AR (wal-mart land) on 0617 and then out of Centennial Airport Denver, CO on June 23

This was also the same AC that caused a fuss over Portland last year

absolutely correct re: hard evidence

hard enough trying to figure out who is on the SAM flights (the 757's are easier but the G5's not so much) BOXERs C-40C-those usually politicians or gov't officials taking trips with other people cause they are moar of a transport AC than the the moar comms/office-oriented C-40B.

Pelosi and 'crew' in SD for the Lewis Launch last Sat. (arrived Friday) on a C-40C

The patterns mostly the give away for the SIGINT gathering

The kicker is dat observing from afar you can get the plane and recognize the pattern but absent a news item or insider info that is really all you have is a plane and a pattern.

Sometimes the news allows retrieval in the case of the story about kids being dumped in Chatanooga, TN and a few days prior to that story breaking a SAM flight arrived and then left the next day and not a usual destination for those.

That the most recent example for retreival

Cap#2

The FAA test AC from 0718 over Nashville a good example of those type of patterns.
