I have a good amount of seat time with Libre Office. It'll most do everything you want, but its menus are different from msoffice so it can be frustrating especially when bouncing between the two.

The history is interesting, it traces all the way back to Star Office.

I know a few folks that swear by emacs.

They use it heavily daily and that seems to be key to having success with it. I gave it half a shot, but just didn't use it enough for it to stick.
