"The Money Is Gone": Archegos Employees Lose $500 Million From Company Bonus Pool

It isn't just Bill Hwang who is "suffering" from the spectacular crash of Archegos Capital Management. The company's employees have also lost about $500 million after their deferred pay plan crashed in value alongside the firm's other holdings. The value of the deferred bonuses had risen to as high as $500 million before the company's collapse, FT reported last week.

In addition to creating turmoil at banks like Nomura and Credit Suisse after being forced to unwind its extremely leveraged trades, the cash owed to employees is now at risk. The employee's fund was made up of annual bonuses that were carried over under the promise of being released at the point an employee left the firm.

Employees invested "under $50 million" into the fund from the onset, the report notes. FT reviewed a document detailing the bonus fund plans which said: "The company will increase or decrease the amount of the deferred payment by the percentage that the fund’s invested capital has increased or decreased in value." The document notes that 25% of each employees annual bonus was invested into the fund and was to be paid when the employee left Archegos. The document also states that the payout "would not fall below its original value".

Some former employees said they haven't received their deferred pay, however, including the original amount invested. People close to Archegos said: “the money is gone” with “no pot of gold to pay them from” and that the employees “are in a difficult position” and “warrant sympathy”.

GRIMM12 USAF B-52 Stratofortress east from Al-Udeid AB Doha-heading to Afghaniland

US B-52 Bombers, Gunships Sent into Action in Afghanistan in Attempt to Stop Taliban Advance on Key Cities

The United States has sent B-52 bombers and Spectre gunships to Afghanistan in a bid to stop Taliban insurgents who are marching towards three key cities.

The B-52s are flying into Afghanistan from an airbase in Qatar, hitting targets around Kandahar, Herat, and Lashkar Gah in Helmand province, sources told The Times. The move comes amid an increasingly dire situation in Afghanistan, as the Taliban continues to seize territory across the country as U.S.-led forces withdraw. The Pentagon estimates that the group now controls half of Afghanistan's 419 district centers. On Friday, the Taliban seized Zaranj in Nimroz, making it the first provincial capital to be captured by the insurgents since they began their military campaign in May. The Taliban also assassinated the government's chief media officer, Dawa Khan Menapal, on the same day in Kabul. The deployment of American bombers and gunships also highlights how ailing Afghan forces remain reliant on US support.

The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is a long-range, subsonic, jet-powered strategic bomber, which can carry up to 32 tonnes of bombs.

Aramco profit soars to $25.5b, highest since 2018

Saudi Aramco profits rose from a year earlier to SR95.47 billion ($25.46 billion) in the second quarter as a recovering global economy pushed up oil prices and allowed the Kingdom to pump more crude.

It represents a 288 percent increase, and was affiliated with higher oil prices and a recovery in global demand, supported by the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, vaccination campaigns, stimulus measures, and accleerating activity in key markets, the oil giant said in a Tadawul filing.

This was slightly above median economist estimate of $24.7 billion – Bank of America predicted $24 billion; JPMorgan estimated $23.7 billion, while Alrajhi Capital forecast $25.3 billion. “Our second quarter results reflect a strong rebound in worldwide energy demand and we are heading into the second half of 2021 more resilient and more flexible, as the global recovery gains momentum,” Aramco Chief Executive Officer Amin Nasser said. “While there is still some uncertainty around the challenges posed by COVID-19 variants, we have shown that we can adapt swiftly and effectively to changing market conditions,” he added. The company declared a dividend of SR70.33 billion. Aramco’s indicated dividend yield is roughly 4 percent, while BP, Chevron and Exxon Mobil Corp. all pay above 5 percent.

The price of a barrel of Brent crude, the international benchmark, has risen about 40 percent this year and closed at $70.70 on Friday after its biggest weekly decline in four months. The oil giant also benefitted from its strategy to optimize its portfolio, announcing billion dollar deals in recent months. “Our historic $12.4 billion pipeline deal was an endorsement of our long-term business strategy by international investors, representing significant progress in our portfolio optimization program. Our landmark $6 billion Sukuk reinforced our robust balance sheet, further diversifying our funding sources and expanding our investor base. And, once again, we delivered a dividend of $18.8 billion for our shareholders,” Nasser said.

He said the company will move forward on a number of strategic programs, particularly focusing on sustainability and low-carbon fuels.
