4 U.S. Marines Killed in Kabul Suicide Bombing – Report

At least four United States Marines have been killed by a set of suicide bombings in Kabul, Afghanistan according to a preliminary report.

Very preliminary report—But reliable sources familiar with the situation on the ground in Afghanistan are telling my team that four US Marines were killed in bombing outside of the Kabul Airport. Again, this is preliminary, but horrific if confirmed. Pray. — Charlie Kirk (@charliekirk11) August 26, 2021

The pair of explosions detonated just outside of the airport the Biden administration has been using as an evacuation point and outside a nearby hotel used by Americans to await their turn to evacuate. The four Marines are the first U.S. casualties in Afghanistan in more than a year thanks to an agreement between the Trump administration and the Taliban.

The situation in Afghanistan has deteriorated rapidly since President Biden scrapped the Trump plan and made his own. The Taliban is now better equipped than 84 nations, American citizens are trapped in the country, and now at least four U.S. service members have died.

The Education Department will wipe out $1.1 billion in debt for ITT students

In a move that will wipe out $1.1 billion in debt owed by 115,000 borrowers, the Education Department said on Thursday that it would forgive the federal loans of students who attended ITT Technical Institute but left after March 2008 without completing a degree.

The decision is the latest in a series of actions by the agency to use relief programs that languished during the Trump administration to eliminate the student loans of some of the country’s most distressed borrowers. ITT, a large for-profit chain accused by federal and state officials of fraudulently luring students with inflated claims about its graduates’ earnings and career prospects, collapsed in 2016. Around 43 percent of those now eligible to have their debt eliminated had defaulted on their loans, the agency said. “Today’s action continues the department’s efforts to improve and use its targeted loan relief authorities to deliver meaningful help to student borrowers,” the education secretary, Miguel Cardona, said. “At the same time, the continued cost of addressing the wrongdoing of ITT and other predatory institutions yet again highlights the need for stronger and faster accountability.” Because ITT went bankrupt, the cost of the forgiven debt will largely fall on American taxpayers.

no surprise there....the hits just keep coming

Mr. Cardona announced the forgiveness under a provision known as closed school discharge, which allows those left stranded by an abrupt closure to have their federal student loans wiped out. The discharge had previously been offered to ITT students who were enrolled when the school shut down, but the announcement on Thursday significantly expands the pool of borrowers who will benefit from it. The March 2008 date was chosen, the Education Department said, because that is when ITT’s executives engaged in a scheme to disguise the company’s true financial condition, which drove up costs for students and reduced the qualify of the education ITT provided.

Borrowers who did not enroll elsewhere will have their loans automatically eliminated, the agency said. Those who enrolled elsewhere but did not complete their degree will need to apply for the debt relief by contacting their student loan servicer or submitting an application form to their servicer.

Judge allows Johnson & Johnson to split talc liabilities from main business

A federal judge has cleared the way for Johnson & Johnson to split its talc-related liabilities from the rest of its business, a decision that could allow the drugmaker to move thousands of claims by people who used its Baby Powder and other talc products into bankruptcy.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Laurie Selber Silverstein ruled at a hearing on Thursday in Delaware bankruptcy court. The ruling came over the objections of lawyers for people who claimed that J&J’s talc products contained asbestos and caused them or family members to develop cancer. Plaintiffs include women who have suffered from ovarian cancer, and others battling mesothelioma. Moving talc-based claims into the Chapter 11 process could shield J&J from having to defend against cancer claims in jury trials. The New Brunswick, New Jersey-based company has not publicly announced such a plan.

In rare move, Japan prepares to offer refuge to Afghans

Hundreds who worked at embassy and aid group could qualify for resettlement.

Japan has begun preparations to take in Afghans who worked for its embassy and aid organization, an unusual opening of doors to war refugees amid mounting concerns of Taliban retribution against locals who worked with foreign governments.

As Afghans and foreign nationals alike desperately try to flee the country after the Taliban's lightning assault took over the country, including the capital Kabul, Japan this week sent a Self-Defense Forces transport plane to evacuate Japanese nationals and local staffers at its embassy and the Japan International Cooperation Agency to a neighboring country. "The government as a whole will need to consider" whether to accept Afghan refugees, Justice Minister Yoko Kamikawa had told reporters on Friday. She said Japan will not deport Afghans against their will for the time being.

The Japanese government plans to initially allow these Afghan staffers and their families to stay in Japan for up to 90 days on humanitarian grounds, and to later grant them visas that will allow them to stay and work in Japan for up to five years. Japan could grant further extensions depending on developments in Afghanistan. Afghan nationals could also apply for refugee status after a certain amount of time, which would open the door for long-term residency.

It is unclear how many would sign up for the program, though there are estimates within the Japanese government that roughly 500 could qualify. Japan's Immigration Services Agency generally grants refugees legal status for five years initially. They can qualify for long-term residency once they renew, and as long as they meet certain obligations like living in Japan for at least five years. It is rare for Japan to take in foreign nationals fleeing conflict. Japan granted refugee status to 47 in 2020, according to its Immigration Services Agency. In contrast, Germany recognized 63,000 and Canada 20,000. Japan's reluctance to accept refugees has drawn international criticism especially in light of the Syrian civil war, which has forced over 6 million to flee the country since 2011. While the U.S. and Europe have announced large-scale resettlement programs, Japan took in just 95 Syrians as exchange students in the four years starting fiscal 2017.

Still, Japan has recognized roughly 10,000 refugees from the Vietnam War over the course of almost 30 years. It has also accepted dozens of Myanmar refugees annually through a program for those recognized as refugees in a third country.
