Exxon to Receive Emergency Oil Supply From Strategic Reserves
The U.S. Department of Energy has authorized the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to conduct an exchange with ExxonMobil Baton Rouge to alleviate any logistical issues of moving crude oil within areas affected by Hurricane Ida.
The major oil company will be getting 1.5 million barrels of DOE-supplied oil for its 517,000-barrel-a-day refinery, the DOE said. Exxon is among fuel producers that had to shut their crude processing plants in Louisiana as Ida roared ashore Sunday. The catastrophic storm also left widespread damage to oil infrastructure and the state’s electricity grid. In an email on Wednesday, Exxon said the Baton Rouge refinery has been restarting after shutting down all units to stabilize operations as Ida slammed into south Louisiana Sunday.

Firefighters made progress against the monstrous Caldor Fire, and the weather Thursday began to cooperate with them, particularly the winds.
The blaze, which has burned since Aug. 14, grew to 210,259 acres by Thursday morning, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Crews have contained 25% of it. Temperatures that got as low as 33 degrees overnight, and the humidity climbed to 63%, according to the National Weather Service. Crews continue to guard fire lines in the Christmas Valley in their attempts to protect thousands of homes in the area, and they appeared to be succeeding. Air tankers also are expected to be dropping retardant and water on the blaze today.
A small sign of recovery — Update: 12:20 p.m.
The U.S. Postal Service announced that the Pollock Pines Post Office will be open again on Thursday and that normal delivery and transactions will resume. Customers who use the Kyburz Post Office or the Twin Bridges Post Office can get their mail starting at 9 a.m. at the Pollock Pines Post Office, located at 2669 Sanders Dr. Those using the Milford Post Office on Milford Grade Road and the Herlong Post Offfice on Yuba Street can pick up their mail at the Doyle Post Office on Rachel Drive.
A win with the winds — Update: 10:20 a.m.
Gusty winds that were forecast late Wednesday did not materialize, primarily because of a thick layer of smoke blanketing the basin, Cal Fire officials said. Brian Newman, Cal Fire operations section chief, said Thursday that he was feeling “cautiously optimistic” and “more confident” about protecting the neighborhoods in around South Lake Tahoe from destruction. Two homes were damaged in Meyers on Thursday, fire officials said, but the blaze has not burned down any structures since blowing over Echo Summit on Monday night.

NASA and Google Announce Lease at Ames Research Center
MOFFETT FIELD, Calif. – NASA and Google Inc. Wednesday announced plans to develop a new high-technology campus at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif.
Under the terms of the 40-year agreement, Google will lease 42.2 acres of unimproved land in NASA Research Park at Ames to construct up to 1.2 million square feet of offices and research and development (R&D) facilities in a campus-style setting. “With this new campus, we will establish a new era of expanded collaboration with Google that will further enhance our Silicon Valley connections,” said Ames Director S. Pete Worden. “This major expansion of NASA Research Park supports NASA’s mission to lead the nation in space exploration, scientific discovery and aeronautics research.” “This long-term lease agreement is a key component of Google’s strategy for continued growth in Silicon Valley,” said David Radcliffe, Google’s vice president of real estate and workplace services. “We believe this collaboration between Google, NASA and the city of Mountain View is emblematic of the mutually beneficial partnerships that can be created between the public and private sectors.” Under the terms of this enhanced-use lease (EUL), Google will pay NASA an initial base rent of $3.66 million per year. This rate is based on appraisals establishing fair market value of the land. NASA will use the proceeds to cover the full cost of the lease and the balance may be used for capital revitalization and improvements of the real property assets at Ames.

James Simons, Robert Mercer, Others at Renaissance to Pay $7 Billion to Settle Tax Probe
Executives of hedge fund Renaissance Technologies LLC will personally pay approximately $7 billion in back taxes, interest andpenalties to settle a long-running dispute with the Internal Revenue Service, the firm said, a tax settlement that may be the largest in history. James Simons —the quantitative-investing pioneer who started Renaissance before retiring as the firm’s chairman on Jan. 1—will make an additional “settlement payment” of $670 million, according to the firm. Mr. Simons will also pay back taxes related to his gains.
The dispute relates to moves the firm’s key Medallion fund took between 2005 and 2015 to convert short-term trading gains into long-term profits. It has been closely followed in the worlds of finance and politics because of the enormous amounts involved and because Renaissance’s leaders are among the largest political donors in the U.S. Mr. Simons has been a long-term supporter of Democratic candidates—while Robert Mercer, another Renaissance executive, has backed Republican causes, including former President Donald Trump.
“We engaged for several years in the IRS Appeals process, in which we vigorously advocated the correctness of Medallion’s tax reporting,” Peter Brown, Renaissance’s chief executive, wrote in a letter to Medallion’s investors on Thursday. “Renaissance’s board eventually concluded that the interests of our investors from the relevant period would be best served by agreeing to this resolution with the IRS, rather than risking a worse outcome.” Medallion, which manages about $15 billion, invests the money only of employees and select friends and family members. As such, the settlement doesn’t involve funds that Renaissance manages for outside investors.
Because the settlement relates to the tax treatment of Medallion’s gains, it doesn’t affect the fund’s historic returns, which top most every other hedge fund.
