US may fly Haitian migrants home from Texas starting Sunday

The United States could begin flying some of the thousands of Haitian migrants who have crossed from Mexico into a Texas border camp back to their poverty-stricken homeland on Sunday, hoping to deter others from crossing into the country.

Many of the migrants have lived in Latin America for years but now are seeking asylum in the U.S. as economic opportunities in Brazil and elsewhere dry up. Thousands have been living under and near a bridge in the Texas border city of Del Rio, and many of them said they will not be deterred by the U.S. plans. Some said the recent devastating earthquake in Haiti and the assassination of President Jovenel Moรฏse make them afraid to return to a country that seems more unstable than when they left. โ€œIn Haiti, there is no security,โ€ said Fabricio Jean, a 38-year-old Haitian who arrived in Texas with his wife and two daughters. โ€œThe country is in a political crisis.โ€

A U.S. official told The Associated Press that the U.S would likely fly migrants out of the country starting Sunday on five to eight flights a day. Another official expected no more than two flights a day. The first official said operational capacity and Haitiโ€™s willingness to accept flights would determine the number of flights. Both officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly. Scores of people waded back and forth across the Rio Grande on Saturday, re-entering Mexico to purchase water, food and diapers in Ciudad Acuรฑa before returning to the Texas encampment.

The Department of Homeland Security said Saturday that it moved about 2,000 migrants from the camp to other locations Friday for processing and possible removal from the U.S. A statement from the agency also said it would have 400 agents and officers in the area by Monday morning and would send more if necessary.

President Moon heads to New York for UN speech during Chuseok holiday in Korea

President Moon Jae-in left for New York, Sunday, to attend the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly later the same day.

He plans to deliver a keynote speech on Korean peace and Seoul's role in resolving global challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and climate crisis, according to Cheong Wa Dae. His five-day visit to the U.S., which will also take him to Hawaii for an alliance event, comes as Koreans celebrate Chuseok, one of their biggest and most important traditional holidays โ€• the Korean equivalent of Thanksgiving Day. Moon is scheduled to address the 76th session of the U.N. General Assembly at the headquarters of the international organization Tuesday (local time). He is expected to request support for his peace drive and reaffirm Seoul's commitment to make more contributions to the international community. This year, in particular, the two Koreas mark the 30th anniversary of their simultaneous accession to the U.N. On Monday, Moon will be present at the Sustainable Development Goals Moment (SDG Moment) event, along with the members of BTS, a globally renowned South Korean boy band and Moon's special envoys for "future generations and culture." The SDG Moment is designed to put a fresh vigor into the campaign to achieve the U.N.-led goals adopted in 2015. Moon will then hold bilateral summits with Slovenian President Borut Pahor and Vietnamese President Nguyen Xuan Phuc on the sidelines of the U.N. session. His aides said there is no plan for a separate meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden.

Moon plans to meet with Albert Bourla, chairman and CEO of Pfizer, and join a roundtable meeting on South Korea's bid to become a global vaccine hub. Following a two-night stay in New York, Moon will fly to Honolulu to attend the transfer ceremony of the remains of South Korean and American troops killed during the 1950-53 Korean War. He will also award medals to independence activists under Japan's colonial rule of Korea from 1910-45, who currently reside in Hawaii.

Brazil's Bolsonaro vows to break NYC COVID-19 mandate by attending UN meetings without getting vaccinated

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro says he will address the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week without being vaccinated, which violates the city's COVID-19 mandate for indoor events. "Why would I get vaccinated?" he said in an online broadcast after speaking about giving a speech at the UN's general assembly, according to a translation from The Guardian. "Once everyone has been vaccinated, I'll decide my future." Bolsonaro has refuted the dangers of COVID-19 since it first emerged, calling it as bad as a "little flu" while the virus swept through Brazil at a breakneck pace. He's also publicly spoken out against the safety of the vaccine, claiming that people who received it could "turn into a crocodile." UN Secretary General Antรณnio Guterres told the BBC that despite New York's vaccine mandate, he can't require heads of states to get the shot. New York City officials released strict guidance on Wednesday requiring proof of vaccination for every person entering the UN General Assembly Hall. The UN's New York office already requires its staffers to be vaccinated, however the organization's vaccination enforcement has historically waned for visiting delegates and diplomats amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the New York Times
