3 years ago, my child was in 9th grade Honors English. The entire grading rubric was NOT English, but GRIT (Guts, Resilience, Integrity, and Tenacity).
So, personality and behaviors, instead of teaching kids to read Shakespeare and to write. They had to show "constant improvement." That meant they could never do their best work and turn it in. If they did a great job the first time, they got a worse grade, than if they started out low and improved.
So, instead of doing their best, these 14-year-olds quickly learned to purposefully misspell words and to write awkward sentences, so that when they "fixed" their work, there would be "evidence of growth." Also, group participation played in strongly for the grade. So, you could be a beautiful writer and an introvert, but you wouldn't get a good grade in English if you didn't want to be outgoing in class. THANK YOU, Peter, for taking this on! This is THE BIGGEST Problem with our education system. It is no longer about what knowledge is of most worth. It is about what kinds of humans do we wish to create. And the definition of "we" is never the parents and the local teachers. Dystopian fiction is less frightening than our current reality. Parents of my Godson had to remove him (with his thanks) one month after he started at a "community (alt public) school" two years ago because they were giving him low grades when he is super high in smarts and doing excellent work. I knew about this artifical low grading and explained it to them, so he'd know he wasn't crazy.
GRIT was an index developed by positive psychologist Angela Duckworth who wanted to understand why some people succeed more than others. Useful for that purpose - but was was never meant to be used to develop grit in people - last i saw, Duckworth was objecting to that way of using the idea in Cali. But Cali has continued, it's probably all over by now.
If used that way, it means schools get to purposely stress students out in the name of developing resiliency and "grit" - using the index as a justification. That is immoral. I don't get to break your leg and then say "thought it would help ya develop moral fortitude."
Benjamin Bloom taxonomies, BF Skinner machine learning, Social-emotional learning, CASEL, GRIT development programs - all use MKU type techniques good for BRAINWASHING.

When i speak of free will, bear in mind that it's my belief but based on experience that free will is central in all cases - it's never just nature or nurture that determines outcomes, the soul always makes a choice. Even in mental illness. Read an acct by someone one that, how when he had a therapist who cared, he finally became motivated to give up "the voices" - and then became aware of the treatment that worked.
Free will is not will power. It is the exercise of our ability to choose - to direct our intention to a goal. This is available even to mentally ill people. I've seen it. I've experienced it. This is why, in a broader sense, there are no real victims - because the soul always chooses. Why prayer works as well. Why zero sum game is a fiction. "when God closes a door, He opens a window."
The obstacle is that some choices are difficult and so we avoid them or put them off. To changes habits is tough and painful. To come out of dependency is difficult but possible. Much easier with the support of others but the choice is always ours to make.
This is my opinion, but it's based on experience not conjecture.

Hope your plan goes well. I was offered a teaching job seven years ago after a long hiatus. Started noticing weird new policies, ways of writing sylliabi (harsh language & penalties for late work, mandatory "contracts", etc). Led to big dig that helped us navigate a course for Godchildren, so they sidestepped the worst of the educational 'interventions'.

Substance abuse raises risks of COVID after vaccination — especially if it’s weed
Getting vaccinated against COVID-19 lowers your chances of catching the coronavirus, but people with substance use disorders (SUDs) face higher risks for infection after vaccination compared to those without the disorder. Andmarijuana, of all abused drugs included in new research, made the biggest impactin the likelihood someone got a breakthrough infection, defined as those that occur two or more weeks following complete vaccination, according to a new study published Tuesday in the journal World Psychiatry.
An analysis of nearly 580,000 electronic medical records of fully vaccinated people without a prior coronavirus infection revealed that 7% of those with SUDs — involving alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, opioid or tobacco — had a breakthrough case compared to 3.6% of those without SUDs.
People with SUDs were also more likely to be hospitalized and die from breakthrough infections.
Among those included in the study, about 22.5% with SUDs required hospitalization, while 1.7% of them died due to their breakthrough case. That’s compared to 1.6% and 0.5%, respectively, among people with SUDs but who didn’t get sick, meaning they were hospitalized or died from other causes.
Researchers learned underlying health conditions, including high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity, as well as poor socioeconomic factors such as housing and employment instability, were “largely responsible” for the increased risk of breakthrough infections among those with SUDs. But when researchers accounted for these factors in the data, they found only marijuana use disorder made one more likely (55%) to get COVID-19 after vaccination; all other SUDs had no longer increased risk for breakthrough infection.
The team with the National Institute on Drug Abuse and Case Western Reserve University in Ohio suspects the harmful effects of marijuana on lung and immune system function may explain their findings, given the drug is more often used by younger people with few underlying health conditions. Electronic medical records used in the study did not specify whether people smoked, ate or vaped cannabis, or used a combination of those methods.
The findings offer an important look into the risks people with SUDs face, a group that was not specifically studied during initial clinical trials. People with SUDs often have weakened immune systems because of drug use and other accompanying health conditions.
