His name is Arturo Marcelino Sosa Abascal. Born in Caracas Venezuela, he is the first Latin American to lead the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), the largest religious order in the RCC communion. He was elected Superior General by the Society's 36th General Congregation on 14 October 2016.

In times long gone, the protestants as a slur, nicknamed the position the “Black Pope” because the Jesuit garb is black (the Pope’s is white). Like the Popes, the position was a lifetime appointment, and the Jesuits as the largest institution in the RCC , in the distant past, were very influential.

In the late 18th century, Pope Clement XIV was forced to suppress the Jesuits because of complaints by various Catholic Monarchies about the influence the Jesuits had over the people (through providing education).

“ Monarchies attempting to centralize and secularize political power viewed the Jesuits as being too international, too strongly allied to the papacy, and too autonomous from the monarchs in whose territory they operated”.
