Protests swell over arrest of governor in Russia
People in the Russian Far East city of Khabarovsk have taken to the streets in a second week of protests over the arrest of the popular local governor.
Khabarovsk region governor Sergei Furgal was arrested earlier this month on suspicion of involvement in murder and other cases more than 15 years ago. Furgal has denied the charges. The opposition party member was elected governor in 2018, marking a setback for President Vladimir Putin's governing party. Local media reported that about 20,000 people rallied in Khabarovsk on Saturday, demanding Furgal's release. The protests have spread to other areas in the Far East and Siberia. People in the Far Eastern city of Vladivostok also demanded Putin's resignation.
The events appear to reflect people's dissatisfaction with the long time that the Putin administration has been in power. A woman protester said all the forestry products, fish, and gold go to Moscow. She added this is the time to stop it. Security authorities have stepped up vigilance in connection with the mounting anger against the government. Two people were detained in Vladivostok.
