What else that year and around then?
1859 -1861: Salomon Rothschild traveled throughout the U.S., Canada, and Cuba, witnessing what occurred bringing on the Civil War, not agreeing with Abraham Lincoln and siding with the Confederates. He was there when the future King Edward VII visited, and saw Charles Blondin's high wire act, as well as the arrival of the first Japanese embassy to the U.S., and the casting off of the SS Great Eastern. He was accompanied with a team representing the Rothschilds, meeting with influential persons throughout their travels, and he was described as filthy mouthed and given to nude photos, and an English relative had described him as "brilliantly gifted but less addicted to steady work and habits of business than his brothers…genial, brilliant, somewhat dare-devil."
