The UK is Keeping Myth of the 'Russian Threat' Alive to Use it as a Weapon, Journo Says

UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has claimed that Russian spies are targeting organisations developing a coronavirus vaccine in the UK, US and Canada. The UK National Cyber Security Centre said the hackers are "almost certainly" operating as part of Russian intelligence services.

The National Cyber Security Centre has not, however, provided information about which organisations had been targeted or whether any information had actually been stolen. This comes after claims of interference in the 2019 election and a confirmation that the long-delayed "Russian report" would be published next week.

Journalist and political commentator Ollie Richardson cast doubt on these bold claims from the UK Foreign Secretary.

Sputnik: How seriously should we take Dominic Raab's comments?

Richardson: I think these constant, so-called revelations are becoming very tiresome and beyond pathetic. The UK government is using a phrase, almost certain. That's very similar to the phrase that was used by Theresa May at the time of the alleged Skripal poisoning, she said, "highly likely". So it's a very similar expression. In the legal domain, that's not adequate enough proof. You need to present something tangible as proof and have something concrete. They haven't done that this time.

They haven't done it with their allegations of election interference from Russia's side and they haven't done it with the allegations of hacking with the UK's research into a coronavirus vaccine. In general, this is a booster injection of propaganda, or anti-Russian propaganda, to top up the previous one from a month or two ago. So really the UK government needs to keep this perpetual 'threat' alive.

Sputnik: Why do you think Raab made these statements now?

Richardson: It's not a coincidence that, in the last 24 hours in Russia, the Director of the National Research Centre for microbiology, he said in an interview with Russian state media, that Russia might register a coronavirus vaccine by the end of the summer, i.e.: Russia will be the first country in the world to have a vaccine for the coronavirus.

So, of course, the UK and, should we say, the Democrats in America, can't allow Russia to have such a success of a victory like that. So they have to use all sorts of dirty methods to discredit Russia's achievement here.

Like the cherry on the cake; traditional anti-Russian mainstream media in the UK is mobilising to cover the cracks in the narrative. We see an article in The Telegraph from yesterday titled 'Vladimir Putin has never stopped fighting the Cold War'.

In the very first paragraph of the article, it says, "Perhaps the only surprise about the latest revelations of Russian disinformation and hacking to affect the UK with reference to interference in the 2019 elections and attempts to sell COVID-19 vaccine research is that anyone should have been surprised at all".

So already, it's like legitimising something that has not been substantiated and is not proven. So casual laypeople who do not know so much about geopolitics or politics, who are just ordinary people, ordinary workers. They may read something like this and they're basically fed this narrative with no substantiation and they have perhaps no knowledge of the resources they consult. So they swallow this and then they may tell a friend "Oh, I read this article in The Telegraph and it says, This and That ". That's how it works, It's very sad.

'Difficult to believe': Malcolm Turnbull renews calls for Nick Xenophon to declare work for Huawei

London: Former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull says former South Australian senator Nick Xenophon should join the foreign influence register given his work in spruiking for Chinese firm Huawei, which is now banned from supplying 5G in Britain, Australia and the United States.

Xenophon has resisted calls to register saying he only provides legal advice to the Chinese firm.

But Turnbull said it was "difficult to believe" that Huawei had hired Xenophon purely for his legal skills.

"Is he also seeking to influence governments and public opinion and is he doing more than just being the lawyer giving advice on technical legal matters?

"Given Nick's background, it's difficult to believe that the only reason that they've retained him for is his legal skills.

"Nick should have a close look at that, I would think," he said.

He said that Australians spruiking for Huawei should register on the foreign influence register established by his government, to counter Chinese influence operations.

"Given the relationship between the Communist party in China and Huawei they'd be very well advised to go on their register," he said.

"It's just a question of transparency.

"If people who should be on it aren't on it then they've committed an offence."

Turnbull also backed Britain adopting a foreign influence register, similar to the one his government introduced as one way of trying to counter Chinese influence.

"Generally I think the approach we took was a good one, it was a world-leading set of legislation," he said.

"If people want to influence the politics of Australia or Britain, on behalf of a foreign government or a foreign political party then all you're asking for them is just to put their hand up and say 'yep, I'm here, that's what I'm doing.'

"If their conduct is above board and reputable and so forth they shouldn't have any concerns about that, the thing that we're concerned about - the core of the problem - is the coercive and corrupt conduct."

Turnbull made the comments in a wide-ranging interview via Zoom with The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age in the wake of Britain's 5G Huawei ban - an outcome for which he personally lobbied.

Face masks to become MANDATORY across Melbourne in effort to bring COVID-19 outbreak under control - as Victoria records 363 new cases and three more deaths

Face coverings to become mandatory across Melbourne and Mitchell Shire

Drastic measure comes as Premier Daniel Andrews confirmed 363 new cases

Three more deaths confirmed in Victoria - taking Australian death toll to 122

18 new cases confirmed in NSW with residents told to avoid non-essential travel

Said mask did not need to be hospital-grade and could be as simple as a scarf

Teachers among jobs exempted when directive comes into effect on Thursday

Face masks will become mandatory across Melbourne and Mitchell Shire in a bid to stop the spread of COVID-19 across the city.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced the drastic new measure on Sunday as the state recorded another 363 cases and three more deaths from the infectious respiratory disease.

Those who disobey the new government directive - effective from 11.59pm on Wednesday - will face a $200 fine.

He said the mask did not necessarily need to be hospital-grade, and could be a home-made face covering like a scarf.

Victorian Health Minister Jenny Mikakos has meanwhile announced the state's state of emergency will be extended to August 16 as case numbers continue to rise.

Mr Andrews said there would be exceptions to the order in cases where it's not practical or masks cannot be worn for professional reasons.

'Those who have a medical reason, kids under 12 years of age, those who have a professional reason or if it's just not practical, like when running [will be given an exemption],' he said.

'However you will still be expected to carry your face covering at all times to wear when you can.'

Teachers will not have to wear a mask while teaching, but students attending for VCE and VCAL secondary qualifications or for onsite supervision will not be exempted.

Mr Andrews stressed the stage three restrictions already in place would still apply and Melbourne residents could only leave the home for one of the four permitted reasons - for essential shopping, to provide care, for work or study or for exercise.

'I just want to make a point about the fact that whilst a mask or a face covering will be of benefit, it doesn't mean that we can be shaking hands again,' he said.

Russia Is Investigating Recent Drone Attack On Its Troops In Northeast Syria

Russia is investigating a recent drone attack that injured three of its service members in Syria’s northeastern region, the Hawar News Agency (ANHA) reported on July 18.

The attack, which took place on July 16, targeted a gathering of Russian and Syrian troops in the vicinity of the town of al-Darbasiyah right on the border with Turkey. Three Syrian service members were also injured in the attack.

According to the ANHA, Russian investigators visited the attack site. Later, the investigator held a meeting in al-Darbasiyah’s coordination center. The meeting was reportedly attended by a senior Russian officer.

“The meeting lasted for an hour, after that the delegation headed to the city of al-Qamishily,” ANHA’s reporter said.

Kurdish sources accused the Turkish military of carrying out the attack. The drone used in the attack was a quadcopter armed with a small explosive charge. The Turkish military operates such drones.

The drone attack on Russian troops in northeastern Syria was a serious provocation. If Turkey is indeed responsible, its relations with Russia will witness a setback.
