Student suspended from the University of Queensland after China protests launches legal action
Drew Pavlou, the student suspended from the University of Queensland after protesting China's human rights violations, has launched legal action against the university and China's Consul General in Brisbane.
Mr Pavlou believes he was targeted by the university because his activism put its lucrative relationship with China at risk.
"I think the University of Queensland suspended me because they realised my protests threatened a relationship with the Chinese government that was worth hundreds of millions of dollars every year, worth billions over the long-term," Mr Pavlou told 60 Minutes reporter Tom Steinfort.
"They've achieved all their aims… to silence me as a voice on campus and to stop me from being a campus activist."
Mr Pavlou was suspended from the university after he organised a peaceful protest in support of Hong Kong democracy on campus last July, which was attacked by pro-China Communist protesters.
The university insisted its disciplinary action against Mr Pavlou had nothing to do with his political activism, and was based on allegations of bullying and disruption.

Reports of a Sudden Surge in Texas Coronavirus Cases Including More Than 80 Infants is FALSE, Officials Say
Another day, another lie.
The fake news media exploded this weekend after a health official on the Texas Gulf Coast claimed 85 infants have tested positive for the Coronavirus.
“We currently have 85 babies under the age of one year in Nueces County that have all tested positive for COVID-19,” Annette Rodriguez said during a public health update in Corpus Christi in a Friday presser. “These babies have not even had their first birthday yet. Please help us to stop the spread of this disease” by staying home except for necessary trips, socially distancing and wearing masks in public.
Fake News media outlets such as CNN, CBS and AP ran with the story.
It turns out Annette Rodriguez was mistaken, according to Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales.
Kris 6 News in Corpus Christi reported that there was no sudden surge in COVID-19 cases in infants.
“On Friday, July 17, during a press conference, a spokesperson mentioned that 85 infants under the age of one had tested positive for coronavirus,” Judge Canales said in a statement, KRIS 6 reported. “This number reflects the cumulative total of positive tests for infants under the age of 1 since the beginning of testing in mid-March, which has resulted in 8,171 positive test results.”
“For context, the spokesperson was using that statistic to illustrate that no one is naturally immune to this virus. While the elderly and those with existing medical conditions are at greater risk of illness and death, anyone can get the virus, from the elderly to infants, and without regard to race, gender, or economic status. The number was used to illustrate this point.”
“However, without this context,stating this number during our press conference led many to believe that we had a sudden surge in infants under the age of one testing positive. We have NOT had a sudden surge of 85 infants testing positive,” she said.

Populism and politics can be as deadly as most serious diseases, and the COVID-19 pandemic has provided a blueprint for how that can occur.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has treated data as an irrelevant nuisance, as he has sought to appease popular demand rather than proscribing necessary but bad-tasting medicine. Worse, his rivals view COVID-19 mismanagement mismanagement more as a political tool to unseat Netanyahu rather than focusing on the many deaths than might ensue.
The numbers have not been on Netanyahu’s side. Seven percent of people who were screened for the novel coronavirus over the weekend tested positive – a number that continues to rise, as the death toll passed 400 and the number of serious patients climbed closer to 300.
Is the government paying attention to those statistics? It is unclear at which numbers Israel’s leaders are looking, as their decisions since the start of the second wave have not been rooted in data or a proper analysis of risk versus benefits, senior leaders continue to tell The Jerusalem Post.
On Sunday, the data revealed at the Knesset coronavirus committee meeting by Health Ministry professionals – as opposed to politicians – made this dismissal even clearer.
The government voted to close pools, a move that the chairman of the Israeli Association of Public Health Physicians said was not based on “epidemiological logic.” In fact, only four people in the last week were infected at a pool, the data showed.
Moreover, synagogues are allowed to continue to operate in gatherings of 10 people inside or 20 outside, despite 4.8% of known infections starting at religious institutions. On the other hand, restaurants, where only 4% of infections occurred, will be forced to operate as takeout or delivery beginning on Tuesday.

Preparing For Strikes? Israeli Warplanes, Drones Flew Near Syrian Border
On July 19, six warplanes and two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) of the Israeli Air Force (IAF) violated Lebanon’s airspace, according to Syrian pro-government sources.
According to sreports, warplanes and UAVs flew in dual formations near the Syrian-Lebanese border in what appears to be a wide reconnaissance mission.
The warplanes are flying in close formations, two each. The UAVs are also flying side by side, which is unusual.

Lebanon’s National News Agency confirmed that a number of IAF warplanes flew over different regions of the country on high, medium and very low altitudes.
This year, the IAF launched a number of aerial attacks on Syria from Lebanon’s airspace. Most of the targets were located in the central governorates of Hama and Homs. The two main targets were Shayrat Air Base in eastern Homs and Masyaf Scientific Research Facility in western Hama.
Despite posing a real threat to Syria, the Syrian Air Defense Force doesn’t engage IAF warplanes over Lebanon.
The Israeli sorties over Lebanon today indicate that the IAF is preparing a new wave of airstrikes on targets in central Syria or near the capital, Damascus. Another possibility is that Israeli warplanes were involved in a reconnaissance mission against Hezbollah.

The movement was founded by Simon Dolan, an aviation tycoon worth around ÂŁ200million, who earlier this month lost a High Court bid to overturn the government's lockdown rules.
Launching the movement on July 6, the Essex-born entrepreneur said: 'I believe in freedom of choice for all and the protection of personal liberties. The Government’s actions are crippling the economy, denying children education, and trampling over human rights.'

The march, which started in Speaker's Corner and moved to Marble Arch, also looked to repel 'the erosion of freedoms in the UK' brought in during lockdown.
Two months after attending a similar protest in Hyde Park, Piers Corbyn, brother of former Labour leader Jeremy, travelled to a demonstration in Nottingham today.
It comes as the UK government toughened its stance on the wearing of face coverings in public places.
Passengers have had to use them on public transport since June 15 and they will be made compulsory in shops and supermarkets in England from July 24.
Rule breakers will be hit with a ÂŁ100 which can be reduced to ÂŁ50 if paid within a fortnight.

They were told how any rule to impose mandatory mask wearing in offices and other workplaces was 'illogical and irrational given where we now are. Masks will not help'.
Ms Butler-Smith told Sky News: 'It is just the fact that people are being told they have no choice about wearing a mask.
'Because the Government started out saying there is absolutely no need for a mask, and many other important scientists have reportedly said the same, it did not make any sense why they suddenly said it was going to be mandated.
