Boatfag on discussion about Whidbey Island missile launch LB
Sorry no link, my interwebz is sucking r/n
Dropping a few water maps for you'ns.
Pic#1 - This is the area relevant to the Whidbey Island video/pics. The video was shot by Skunk Bay Weather, which is in the circled area. You can see the Skunk Bay lighthouse pinpointed, and the Bay is within that area. Whidbey Island is to the north, obviously. And clearly, the camera would have been pointing north-ish. I don't have an exact bearing on the camera focus, if someone does please share the info. I seem to recall that it was NNW, but that's not what I would call a reliable recollection.
The purple line shows the route that SSBN's take to put to sea from Naval Station Kitsap, which is located right next to Naval Station Bremerton.
The black "X" is NOT the route…technically you CAN get to sea that way but it's shallower and a farther route, which takes you nearly into Canadian waters. They don't go that way.
Pic#2 - Expanded detail of the channels so you can see what I mean about the route to sea. Too many constricted and shallow areas, too much distance and too tight in some areas for you to want to take a big-ass sub like an Ohio class (they're almost as long as big as a destroyer and actually bigger, you just can't see that from the surface).
Pic#3 - Mercer Island. It's way south of the area, so the idea that it was shot from that island is out the window. (Not saying Gates wasn't involved b/c I have no idea, just saying it wasn't launched from that location).
So, here's the oddity.
Assuming this is a missile launch (fuck yes, it is, I've seen them and that's exactly what it looks like), based on the video it appears this sucker was shot either from Whidbey Island or from the far side of it.
Not saying it was a Trident (that's the missile that SSBN's tote) but it has a matching signature. However, that same exhaust plume to missile-body ratio also looks like it matches up to a THAAD shot.
